NuLife has seen much growth over the year 2015, and in our new stead we are all the more better to serve our beneficiaries. Our Vision, Mission and Objectives remain tied to serving our community and the underprivileged, but with a slight adjustment in our focus, we are especially proud to be a one-stop-centre for a wider range of people, facing a wider range of challenges today. From a centre that once had its primary focus on helping Youth-at-Risk and ex-probationers re-integrate successfully into society, NuLife has expanded its embrace, and we are proud to present our new Vision as such: “To be an organization that provides anyone and everyone who approaches us with affordable and accessible assistance, however varied their challenges may be” In this issue of our Newsletter, we hope to update you on all the activities that have contributed to our expansion, and we wish our dear readers a Happy New Year ahead! An ongoing initiative, the 'Robin Hood' project provides second-hand and donated furniture for our beneficiaries to furnish their homes, as well as electrical and plumbing services when needed.

This year, NuLife also appealed to the public for dry food rations for our clients. We received many generous donations that benefitted our clients greatly and we are pleased to report that this added effort was a success!

Next year, we hope to have more volunteers in the area of transporting goods to our beneficiaries. Without quick deliveries made, storage space is required to hold goods, and without sufficient storage space, donated items have no place to be in transit while we arrange for appropriate matches to be made to our beneficiaries.

Having identified this challenge is our first step towards rectifying the situation, and we look forward to a fruitful 2016, where this initiative continues to make homes more livable, and more comfortable for our beneficiaries.

This year, we once more successfully presented our Youth Symposium, which was held during the June school holidays. 4 half-day workshops were conducted over 4 Sundays and each workshop reached out to at least 100 youths from various backgrounds. The participants attended the workshop on a pro-bono basis, thanks to the generosity and kindness of various donors, and were treated to refreshments and lunch after.

This year, the interactive forum had sharing sessions from many professionals, including an established criminal lawyer, a behavioural psychologist, a family therapist and a career counselor. Our youth were treated to the following topics: Youth Crimes, The Law and You, Youth Freedom, Managing Life with a Balance, Choosing Friends, Adopting a Healthy Lifestyle, Anger Management and Keyboard Warriors.

Collaboration with Probation Services: Conflict Resolution

A strong and relevant partnership with Probation Services has allowed NuLife to present other worthwhile programmes, such as a Conflict Resolution Workshop and Decision Making Workshop, both of which we conducted this year.

The workshops equip probationers with ways to react and respond positively in situations of conflict that could lead to offending. They are taught different ways to respond to conflict, how to say "no" and how to govern their emotions during said episode of conflict.

We also have been successful in renewing the tender for next year’s workshop, and will present Decision Making & Problem Solving in 2016 – another key life skill to help our youth lead healthy lives!

Parents’ Support Group

Not forgetting the adults in our community, NuLife facilitated a 10-session Support Group for parents whose children are incarcerated at the Singapore Girls and Boys Homes.

The support groups provided them with a much-needed platform to release pent up emotions, and discuss their thoughts with others in an environment without judgment or prejudice.

Festive Fundraising: DEEPAVALI!

This year, NuLife assisted 100 less fortunate families, a significant increase from 38 families last year, in 2 areas for the Deepavali festive period. To kickstart our fundraising efforts, we set up a stall at Little India during the festive bazaar period selling used books at a token price of $2!

Following the success and sell-out of all our stock, NuLife appealed to donors to sponsor packages that either included household repair and refurbishment work or wet and dry rations and fresh marketing products for underprivileged families. The generosity of our donors ensured that NuLife’s beneficiaries, and especially their young children, could enjoy this time of year. We provided for families in need in the hope that they could entertain and celebrate with family and guests in following the Deepavali tradition.

Beneficiaries received fresh produce, indian spices, fresh poultry and prawns, new clothes, festive goodies, sparklers and other small gifts. The result of this year’s festive fundraising allowed our beneficiaries to celebrate along with the rest of Singapore, and next year, we look forward to assisting other ethnic communities in Singapore with their respective celebrations as well!

Counselling & Casework:

NuLife supports the community by carrying out educational and social activities that benefit families and individuals in need, but the core work of our organization remains assisting those in need with counselling and social work (case work) services. NuLife has a strong team of Psychologists, Counsellors and Social Workers available for the general public to approach and obtain help from. This year alone, Nulife has welcomed and successfully assisted approximately 500 clients with varying problems. NuLife works tirelessly and passionately with other helping organisations such as Singapore’s Community Development Councils, Social Service Offices, Family Service Centres and other Voluntary Welfare Organisations. Some issues that we have been able to collaborate on and assist our clients with, as well as topics that we address during counselling sessions are listed broadly below:

For clients who are in need of emotional and mental support, our Psychologists and professional Counsellors are trained in various therapy models, so that the type of therapy used to assist each individual is tailored uniquely to their personality and specific needs. At NuLife, Brief Solution-Focused Therapy, Reality Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Art Therapy, Play Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Learned Optimism Techniques and Person Centred Therapy are commonly used in individual and group sessions.

Back To School 15/16 At NuLife, we believe in the benefits and empowerment of a good education and thus strive to ensure that no child is robbed of the chance to enroll in and successfully graduate from school. Every year, each child incurs significant expenses to continue their studies. However, many of our beneficiaries struggle to make ends meet and do not qualify for the Financial Assistance Scheme either. NuLife therefore offers donors the avenue to sponsor school necessities for these school-going children, such as schoolbooks, uniforms and P.E. attires, school bag and stationary, shoes and socks.

GIRO Donors In other news, NuLife’s GIRO donor scheme has taken off with great success, and our pool of donors who pledge a monthly donation to the organization has grown tremendously in the last year. This has encouraged us greatly, as the commitment made by these supporters reaffirms the work we do, and our passion to serve. IPC Application NuLife will be applying for IPC status in the 1st quarter of 2016. This application required us to thoroughly review our internal management systems, about which more information can be found in our Annual Report for 2015. The cost of our application was $31 500, which we paid for with an 80% grant from NCSS amounting to $25 200. The remaining $6 300 is currently being raised by NuLife. Website Update In the last month, NuLife’s website has been revamped to enhance user experience as well. Our comprehensive website now serves as a one-stop information portal where you can find information on anything NuLife-related. Queries? No problem! Visit www.nulife.com.sg now!

CPF and Medical Benefits for Staff With the help and success of our GIRO Donation programme, NuLife is pleased to be able to offer our full-time staff their monthly salaries now with CPF and medical benefits as well! Internships We also offer promising interns completing their undergraduate and Post-Graduate studies the opportunity to do their practical attachments at our centre.
