The Beaver Ambassador Club’s Las Vegas International Rally was a great success. Vicki and Roy Warren deserve many thanks for an outstand-ing job as Rally Masters. Thanks also to their able assistants, Doug and

Nancy Strand and Bill and Karen Maloof. You should have received a letter with your ballot telling about our guest speaker, Bill Osborne of Monaco RV, giving his views of the RV industry.

The results of our special election were announced at the Corporation meeting by the Tally Committee. The vote was 619 in favor and 28 opposed to allowing Friends of Beavers to join the club. Remember, the requirements are that a non-Beaver coach be diesel powered and the owners must be sponsored by a BAC member.

Several new developments are helping BAC members keep in contact with each other. Bill Sprague, Region 1 Director, has worked hard at forming a Circle the Beavers network that encourages informal gatherings of Beaver friends. This net-work has proven to be very successful in the Northwest. Tom and Lynn Crowley along with Keith Cooper are establishing a Beaver page on Facebook as another way for us to stay in contact with each other.

Be sure and read about avenues Tim Bentley has discovered to bring in additional revenue to the club. For example, if you want to purchase some-thing from Amazon, be sure and go to Amazon from the BAC homepage. This provides a com-mission to us, and is done at no additional cost to you as the purchaser. Future International Rallies were discussed at the Las Vegas Board meeting, including the chance to have a ‘Rally within a Rally’ at the FMCA’s Family Reunion in Gillette, Wyoming, in June

2013. Details have not been worked out yet, but the BAC rally will probably start a few days before the FMCA Family Reunion. Even though we travel separately or in small groups we will be parked together for both rallies and have no need to move. We will be able to use the site’s facilities for our rally activities, which will provide an interesting way to have an International Rally.

After years of service to the Beaver Ambassador Club, two recent retirements need to be announced. Brinley Thomas has given up her duties as the West Coast First Timer Host. Natasha Nichols has agreed to become the new First Timer Host for the West. The other change is that we have a new Sheriff for the West. Noreen Parkhurst asked to resign as sheriff. Our new Sheriff for the West is Les-ley Murray. To Noreen and Brinley, please accept the thanks of all of us in the BAC for the many years of service you have given. We expect to see you enjoying yourselves at many rallies in the future.

Wishing you safe travels this summer and hope that we meet at a rally soon.

Today (April 25), we arrived back in Oregon from the sunny Southwest. Several changes occurred today, including rain on the windshield, 60 degree weather instead of 90, and wearing long pants. Oh well, it was going to be over 1000 there soon, and it will get into the 70’s here soon, and we can enjoy the rallies in the NW this summer. Some of the rallies still have openings, so if you have a last min-ute interest, get in touch with the rally masters.

Something new is happening in Region 1 this year. The Circle the Beavers program is starting. A few months ago Bill Sprague sent an e-mail to all Region 1 members inviting them to join this group. The group agrees to share e-mails about impromptu gatherings, and invite other Beavers to join them. These are not rallies, and are not designed to replace rallies, but to provide addi-tional opportunities to share. This was also posted on the forum, and over 80 signed up. If you didn’t get this e-mail and want more information, con-tact Bill Sprague or me to be included.

We are looking forward to the weekend of May 18th when the Beavers are Circling at Fort Flagler State Park. A couple of months ago Bill Sprague noticed on the park reservation system that there were some empty spaces. Since he and BJ are campground hosts for May they sent an e-mail to the 80+ members on the list. We won’t know who or how many we will see, but about a half dozen members responded that they had made reserva-tions. There is no plan or agenda, but I suspect there will be some serious clam digging and a potluck BBQ.

I am hoping that, as the weather improves, there will be a few more members that initiate a “Circle”. If you are spending the weekend someplace, and would enjoy the company of other Beavers, simply send an e-mail to the 80+ Beavers who have opted in, listing where you will be staying, and the RV Park info. There is no need to plan anything. That can be done when other Beavers arrive. If you don’t have the current Circle list, contact Bill Sprague, and he can help with sending the bulk e-mail. You can also post on the forum, which may attract some members not on the e-mail list. Donna and I are considering doing one in Silverton between the Sisters and Mallard Creek rallies in late June. We will e-mail details to the Circle list soon.

The BAC(k) to the Future 30th Anniversary Inter-national Rally in Harrisburg is shaping up nicely. This should be a great rally. Catering and park arrangements are completed, and vendor partici-pation and seminar planning is coming along. If anyone has any ideas for those, please contact me. Unfortunately, this rally is limited to the first 80 coaches. As I write this (April 25), there are still three openings available, and then we will start a wait list. If you are interested, send in your deposit to get a spot on the wait list. The list is in order by the postmark date of the mailed deposit check. We will be working on trying to get more spots, or to accommodate more BAC members.

Rally planning is coming along nicely for the sum-mer of 2013, with four rallies in the works. If you have any ideas, or wish to be a rally master, get in touch with myself or Region 1 Director, Bill Sprague. ([email protected] , 253-312-1075)

An Invitation from Beaver Coach Sales & Service

We here at Beaver Coach Sales & Service have an open invitation for all Beaver Owners… rally attend-ees, folks in for service, or anyone just in the area, are invited to the BBQ /Open House we are having on June 19th at 6:00pm, for the Beavers attending the "Do Nothing" kick back rally in Sisters, Oregon.

We are very excited to show off our shop, which has space for 14, 45’ Coaches. The shop should look like a Nascar Garage by then! Since February 1st, when Jodie and I took possession of the dealership, we have been working at a feverish pace to get the facility spiffed up and ready for the season! Have you ever seen a 16’X60' paint booth, or a big rig alignment rack in action? Here is your chance!

The following is a glimpse of the changes you will see on your next visit to Bend. The saws, planers and routers have been buzzing in our 500 sf Cabi-net Shop, keeping up with all the custom cabinets, 3D, led, HD TV conversions. We just received our commercial carpet steam cleaner, which will be an important tool in our new full service, inside and out, detail department! We have just added 850 feet of shelf space and 480 sf of easy access, ergonomic space to our Parts Department! This is in addition to our existing 5000 square feet of parts storage. With the two recent acquisitions, I believe we have the largest selection of Beaver Parts anywhere. Our goal on the sales side, is to have the largest selec-tion of Beaver Coaches on earth!!! We are having great success purchasing Beaver Coaches at auc-tion and yes, consignments and trades are always welcome. I hope to see you at the BBQ. Happy Trails

Greetings from the Southwest Region. March and April have been busy months for the Lands, even though we were only able to attend 3 of 5 rallies we had hoped to attend. Unfortunately we were not able to leave home early enough to partici-pate in the Death Valley Rally. Also we needed to return home sooner than expected and had to cancel the Cat Rally in Kerrville, Texas. From the reports I received from Death Valley Rally attend-ees, I know I missed a great rally. I thank Jim and Natasha Nichols and Jerry and Sharon Pattison for the fantastic job they did putting on the rally.

We had a wonderful time attending the Las Vegas International rally. Roy and Vicki Warren, veteran rally masters, sure know how to organize a rally under difficult or unusual conditions. When Roy volunteered to do the International rally for our region, it was to be in Hemet, California and serve as a lead-in to the FMCA rally in Pomona. When FMCA canceled the Pomona rally, Roy decided an International rally in Las Vegas would be more fun. The change in venue turned out to be good for everyone. The Warrens, along with their team, co-rally masters Bill and Karen Maloof, Doug and Nancy Strand, and local Las Vegas residents Mike and Prudy Randolph, organized a rally with a real Las Vegas flare. After two days of successful com-mittee meetings, and the all day board meeting, we were all ready to start the rally. On the first evening we enjoyed good food, followed by a casi-no night. The room was set up with gaming tables like you find in Vegas casinos. There were even professional dealers at all of the tables and a “pit boss” roaming around. We didn’t use our mon-ey to play. Everyone was given a large amount of poker chips to play at any table. Those with left-over chips were given tickets for the drawing that followed. Not only did we all have fun, the dealers seemed to enjoy the evening dealing and joking with us. Another Las Vegas experience was Bally’s Casino Jubilee backstage tour and show. We were amazed at all the work and expense that goes into putting on a glamour and glitz showgirl produc-tion. There were numerous other activities on the program, but the auction to raise money for the club and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego was one of the most enjoyable. Knowing the money was going to a good cause, people bid gener-ously for the many hand crafted and donated items. The bidding really heated up when the last item, an intricate pine needle Beaver basket made and donated by Bob Handley, was put up for bid. I thought Brinley was going to bid her coach or Charles too, before she finally won the

bid. The auction raised over $4400. Way to go BEAVERS!! Again thanks to all who attended and helped make the rally a success.

After Las Vegas we moved on to Region 4 for ral-lies in Mesa and Tucson. Both rallies were very relaxing and enjoyable. In Mesa, Dorothy and I visited Organ Stop Pizza, Queen Creek Olive Mill, Barleen’s Arizona Opry, and the Hale Theater for the first time. In Tucson it was our first time vis-iting Old Tucson Studio, the Pima Air and Space Museum, and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Muse-um. One reason I like small rallies in places that I haven’t stayed, is the rally masters know the best places to camp, visit, shop, and eat. We also like spending more time with long-time friends and making new ones. Thank you Mike and Prudy Randolph, MESA MARCH MADNESS rally mas-ters, and Dan and Bonnie Savard, TRAVELING THE OL’ WEST rally masters.

I hope you can attend some of the four Southwest Region rallies scheduled. This June we are hosting FUN IN THE PINES at the Rivers Edge RV Park near Clio, CA. This rally should appeal to avid golfers, 4 x 4 enthusiasts, fishermen, train buffs, and nature lovers. At this time the rally is full. If you would like to attend call me at 209 815-0889 to check for cancellations. In September, John and Kathi Shurtz will be first time rally masters for the DRAFT HORSE CLASIC, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, CA. If you’re not go-ing East and want to attend an exciting, unusual rally call John at 307-433-4013 to see if space is available. Don’t forget to sign-up for Mandy and Violet's UNDER THE BIG TOP. Their January rally in Indio gets better every year: better park-ing, more electric days, more food, and more fun. At the last regional rally of the year Tim and Diana Bentley have a surprise for you in Bakersfield, so you better sign-up for the Christmas rally before it’s full. Check the details for all 4 Southwest ral-lies in this issue of Beaver Tales.

We need more regional rallies and first time rally masters. If you think you can’t do a rally, you are wrong. We have a rally guide book, and expe-rienced members that will help you with every step. If you don’t have a co-rally master, I will find you an experienced one. All I need is your idea on what you think would be a good rally. Then we will work on it together, and make it happen. There are 3 weeks between next year’s BAC International Rally in Harrisburg and the balloon rally in Albuquerque. I plan to do a rally near Yosemite National Park during that time and would like someone else to plan another before or after mine. Please email me, [email protected], your rally ideas.

The check made the club a Miracle Maker for 2012 and 2013. BAC has been Miracle Makers annu-ally since 2006. What's New on the Forum?

Go to beaveramb.org and click on Forum to see how our resident experts responded to these questions. My coach needed new brake parts and the service location had a very hard time locating the parts as they were obsolete (the coach is a 1996 Monterey). I found a place. When I checked the Trans fluid (hot +140), it indicated Low 3, so I thought no big deal we just add some fluid. But I had no idea that this was a major project. On an '06 Pat, you need to pull the floor from the bedroom to have access to the filler!! What a bad idea.I have an '02, 40' Pat. When we are set up for a few days, the coach rocks when people walk around. I was wondering if this was normal. My coach has auto leveling and no jacks. The chassis a/c fan continues to run after the engine is turned off. I know there is a cool down period but ours is now running for 15 minutes or longer. It didn't use to do that, wondering if a thermostat or coolant relay may have a problem. 2003 Monterey. There are several new Beaver Equipment Manuals posted for your use on the BAC web site. Look for them under the Coach Assist link to the left of the BAC Home Page. The manual says use silicon grease to lube the brake caliper slide rails once each year. The shop tells me that the tires must be re-moved all the way around to remove the bolts for the rails. Seems like there has to be an easier way if it is done yearly.

Fire in the Hole by Wally Schmidt

June 8, 2011 is a date that will go down in history as a day of "infamy" for Wally and Iris Schmidt. After driving our much-loved 1990 Beaver Marquis only 16 miles following replacement of both head gaskets in the Caterpillar 3208 engine by a Cat dealer (West-ern States Equipment CO, Lewiston, Idaho), a fire in the engine compartment erupted, totally consuming the entire coach. We wish to explain the procedures we went through, hoping it may help BAC members to prevent the same situation.

Please take time to fully inspect any repairs your-self, however minor they may be. It is equally im-portant to "carefully read your insurance policy." If you have replacement insurance, that is good; but if only ACV (actual cash value) is covered be sure to check the value of your coach each year at renewal time and insure it only for that amount (nothing additional will be covered). When repairs are completed, use your credit card should there be a "dispute" over payment. We found that Discover Card people stood be-hind us as the repair company only has 65 days to react. We "stood our ground" and finally won Round 1, the vendor did not challenge again.

Now, our situation is going to arbitration with the subrogation between our insurance company and Western States insurance, which will take time. We are asking for some consideration for value of con-tents, our insurance was inadequate. We’ve changed to insurance recommended by Overland Insurance, who suggested a $20,000 minimum on contents, which we now have on our "new to us" 92 Marquis. We are also having an automatic fire extinguisher system installed in the engine and refrigerator com-partments. If you are interested in this installation, we recommend contacting Jim Sizemore, RV Out-fitters in Bend OR (541) 312-9758. If anyone is in-terested in more information, please do not hesitate to call (541-953-3595) or e-mail us <[email protected]>

In conclusion, words cannot again express our love and gratitude to you, our BAC friends, who have helped us through this traumatic experience.

Happy travels and we’ll see you down the road!

Wally

North Central VP's Report

What a wonderful winter, unusual that it was. Betsy and I spent the bulk of our time in Florida - so we could

take a cruise; Louisiana - where we ate our way through Cajun country and enjoyed a very tra-ditional country Mardi Gras; Arizona - visit-ing friends; and Nevada - where we enjoyed a great Beaver International Rally hosted by the Warrens and supported by the Maloofs and the Strands. Great job gang! So, in spite of another turbocharger replacement followed by a diesel particulate filter regeneration failure 100 miles later, we had fabulous winter, just enjoying our life on the road. In a couple of days we are head-ed back to Michigan to bother the kids and the grandkids sufficiently that they will look forward to us hitting the road in the fall so we can do it all over again. We have yet to tire of this life style and continue to relish our home on wheels. We are so blessed.

Well, I suppose I should get down to business. Region 3 has a number of rallies planned for this summer and a number in the works for 2013. This year’s fare starts with Tailgating Again in Canton, Ohio with Gary and Pat Gerber as the rally masters. This rally runs August 1-6, 2012, and coincides with the Football Hall of Fame Festival and game. This week is packed with a wide variety of activities (not just football) with something for everyone. Parades, food, golf and, of course, football are just some of the possibili-ties. A number of coaches will probably stay on an extra day for the finals of the Drum & Bugle Corps competition. Check out the ad for ad-ditional information. Following Canton, some coaches are traveling to a park near Chicago to visit the windy city. A campground near the train system will permit easy access to the many ame-nities that Chicago has to offer. Contact the Ger-ber’s for additional information on this side trip.

If you would like to fill time ahead of the Beavers in Bean Blossom rally, don’t forget the Caterpillar rally in Goshen or Monaco service opportunities in Wakarusa, Indiana. On August 22, 2012, it’s

on to Bean Blossom, Indiana for a Blues Festival (not Bluegrass, sorry all) at the Bill Monroe Me-morial Music Park. While I need to apologize to all for this error, I also want to thank everyone for sticking with us and the rally. The rally, other than the entertainment, will remain as adver-tised, with an added surprise or two along the way. The rally includes tickets to all the music, 4 nights camping, beer & wine tastings, several socials, etc. While the time to register for this rally will have passed by the time this issue is published, we will maintain a waiting list should we have any cancellations.

Mandy will be leading the Beaver security vol-unteers to the FMCA Family Reunion in In-dianapolis, Indiana, approximately 50 miles away, immediately following the “Bean”. This provides a chance to continue to enjoy Beaver camaraderie and still attend the FMCA event with all its opportunities.

The Bradishes will then be taking those Beavers that are headed for the Revolutionary Beavers International rally in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. This "Rolling to Revolution Rally" leaves Indianapolis on August 31 and arrives at the International on September 8, 2012. Be sure to check out this rally ad for addi-tional information.

Looking forward to 2013 in Region 3, be sure to put the Gillette, Wyoming, Beaver International rally in your schedule. While the dates and the details are not finalized, it will take place in the second and third week of June time frame. The FMCA’s Family Reunion in Gillette is scheduled for June 19-22 and efforts are underway to try to make this a rally in a rally. The facilities in Gil-lette are great and, if the details can be worked out, this venue would be the right place to try this. Keep an eye on future issues of the Beaver Tales for additional information.

Two additional rallies are in the very early plan-ning stages following the FMCA event. One will be held in Wyoming and a second in Montana. Watch for additional information to follow.Until we see you again, safe travels.

This issue brings mixed emotions about the director position for Region 4. Be-cause of too many business conflicts at

this time to devote the attention that he feels the position deserves and requires, Dan Savard has asked to be relieved from the Region 4 Direc-tor position. Dan has many great ideas and has contributed to our club’s leadership, but all of us can understand when one is being torn by com-mitments. We express our thanks and apprecia-tion for the job that Dan has done as our Region 4 Director and hope he will return to a leader-ship role again soon.

On the bright side, Julie Lauderdale has agreed to pick up the remainder of Dan’s term and will be our new BAC Region 4 Director. I look for-ward to working with Julie, and I know she will do a great job supporting Region 4 activities and the director’s duties.

Claire and I had a terrific time the International BAC rally, Beavers Do Las Vegas, with Roy and Vickie Warren, rally masters. For many of us, a highlight of the rally was a tour back stage of Ju-bilee and learning the work of the showgirls and stage hands to put on these fabulous shows. Of course at any Beaver rally, food was outstanding and fun was had by all.

After departing Las Vegas, several of us traveled down to Valle del Oro RV Resort in Mesa, AZ where Mike and Prudy Randolph were the rally masters for Mesa March Madness, with David and Rosa Park as first time co-rally masters. We went to the Organ Stop to have wonderful pizza and ex-citing entertainment from a huge organ that rises out of the floor. The following day, we toured the Queen Creek Olive Mill, where we walked and dined among the olive trees. That evening, we went to Barleen’s Arizona Opry, where the enter-tainment included the lead singer from the To-kens, whose famous song is “The Lion Sleeps To-night”. You probably have that tune in your head after me just mentioning it. Another evening, we

went to the Hale Theatre, a theatre in the round, to see a delightful play, Crazy for You.

At the end of the Mesa March Madness rally, we headed to the new Lazydays RV Resort (formerly Beaudry) in Tucson to begin the Traveling the Ol’ West Rally, with rally masters Dan and Bon-nie Savard, and co-rally masters Tom and Lynn Crowley. The rally was very entertaining, with tours of the Pima Air Museum and the U. S. Air Force bone yard for retired military aircraft. We also toured Old Town Tucson, which was for-merly known as the Old Tucson Studios, watch-ing gun fights, Indian ring dancing, and taking a guided tour highlighting the many movies filmed at this old studio site. We had an added adventure of eating at El Charro, the oldest fam-ily owned Mexican restaurant in the U.S., and the food was excellent. What Beaver doesn’t appre-ciate fine eating around this wonderful country of ours? Dan and Bonnie did a wonderful job as first-time rally masters, and we are looking for-ward to their next exciting rally which we hope they will do sooner rather than later.

Speaking of food, you can look ahead to a great rally in Cajun Country in 2014 where you will have one of the best food experiences of your life. Until then, plan on attending other special rallies being planned in Region 4, such as Aloft in Albuquerque at the ABQ Balloon Fiesta, Oc-tober 8-13, 2013; one being planned in Deming, NM, in 2013 or 2014; and the rolling rally being planned to start in Colorado Springs, CO and go north to the BAC International Rally in Gil-lette, Wyoming, June 19-22, 2013.

Claire and I have been busy in Happy Trails, during the winter and spring. We will be back in Texas soon, prior to our three months of trav-el in August, September, and October. We are signed up for Beavers in Bean Blossom; FMCA in Indianapolis, Indiana; Rolling to Revolution Rally; Revolutionary Beavers BAC Internation-al Rally in Croton-on-Hudson, New York; New England Ramble; and Aloft in Albuquerque. We hope to see you at one of these rallies, and we hope you enjoy seeing America the Beautiful in your motorhome as much as we do.

"No Puddle" Awning Toppers by Bill Sprague

Many Beavers have slideout covers that are level when ex-tended. According to Carefree, they are supposed to “help protect the slideout from water, dirt and debris when it's extended”. They also collect a lot of rain water and flap in the wind. If you don’t have covers, or yours slope suf-ficiently to drain rain water, you might skip this article.

I’ve never convinced myself of the real purpose of slide covers. They are open on the ends so water, dirt and de-bris get up there anyway. If cones or leaves drop on it, the fabric can jam in the aluminum cover. It may have been an idea that seemed good, became popular with motor-home manufacturers, but was never well engineered.

The first time I retracted the kitchen slide on our brand new Beaver after a rain, I had the front door open. The water that had collected in the slide topper came pouring off. I got wet and made a muddy mess as well. I experi-mented with siphons and bilge pumps, but those required climbing on the roof. I watched people use beach balls and various homemade contraptions to form a peak in the canvas. If it rained, the puddles were always there.

There are solutions. A few years ago Tim Bentley and I were independently working on ending the big puddles. Tim’s solution is more elegant than mine. It’s a lot more work too. In fact, Diana may have had to do more than Tim! Their idea was to poke holes in a neat and straight line down the middle of the awning and sew a fabric gut-

ter beneath it. Tim wrote about it on the BAC Forum and included pictures. You can search for ”No Puddle Awning Toppers” or use this link: http://forum.bacrallies.com/m-1268187681 .

My solution is far less elegant, takes about a half hour and works. I randomly melted 20 or 30 1/8th inch holes in the fabric with a small soldering iron. I got the idea from the owner of a fifth wheel whose topper was made of mesh. You might think the topper was to keep rain off the slide-out roof. My view is that it doesn’t. If it is raining, it is wet up there. The wind blows it in from the ends. When you get leaky slides serviced they seal the slideouts, not the covers! My post on the BAC Forum is here: http://fo-rum.bacrallies.com/m-1264111473 or you can search for “Tired of rain filling up the slide topper”.

Does it work? Our posts were dated in the first half of 2010. Tim and Diana have about two years with theirs and I’m closer to three years. Both of us have had good results. As I write this, I’m camping in the rain. I have no puddles and no leaks.

Should other Beaver owners do this? If you are smart, you camp only in warm sunshine. Some of us aren’t that smart. If you camp in cold rain and it gets colder, the puddles turn to ice. The ice can cause severe damage if you retract the slideout. It can cause even more damage to you when you try to crawl up on an icy roof early in the morning to get rid of it, but that’s another story from our trip to Newfoundland!

BAC Public Facebook Page by Lynn Crowley

In keeping with the social media explosion, the BAC is delighted to announce a public BAC Facebook (FB) page to increase exposure for the club and grow the membership. By sharing rally activities and the RV lifestyle on Facebook, Beaver owners and RVers interested in the BAC can gain a better understanding of the club. Here are a few interest-ing Facebook facts:

There are more than 800 million active users on FB today and over 50% of those log on to FB in any giv-en day. The average user has 130 friends. More than 350 million active users currently access Facebook through their mobile devices. In the US more than 71% of web users are also active Facebook user.

If you are on Facebook and want to see what is on the BAC FB page, enter “Beaver Ambassador Club” in

the search bar. If you do not use Facebook, there is a link on the BAC Web Site (www.beaveramb.org) that you can click on to take you to the BAC FB page. Alternatively you can enter www.facebook.com/bea-ver.rv in your browser

If you are a Facebook user, you can help in this en-deavor. On the FB Beaver Ambassador Club page select the “like” button and then click on the “Set-tings” drop down (the gearbox to the right of “Mes-sage” with the down arrow) and click “share,” so your friends can also “like” the Beaver Ambassador Club page. Because the average user has 130 friends this is a great way to quickly get exposure. Also, be sure to post your pictures, videos, status, and comments as you attend BAC rallies so others can see that we are a vibrant, active club.

A big thank you to Keith Cooper for his time and ef-fort in setting up the BAC FB public page.

Treasurer's Report

Our financial results through the first six months of the fiscal year are almost $7,000 better than budget, although that is the result of a lot of

plusses and minuses.

Income is $6,900 better than budget, despite re-newal dues incomes coming in $2,900 worse than budget. This was more than offset by excellent results in new member dues (mostly people with Beaver coaches, not the result of our recent By-Laws change), Overland Insurance Services income, in-come from regional rallies, and better than budget-ed investment income.

Expenses were essentially on budget. The only sub-stantial deviation from budget was in taxes, the result of my decision (after consulting with tax experts) that our income from Overland Insurance Services is sub-ject to both federal and Oregon income taxes. Our combined rate is 21.6%. We refiled the tax returns for the last two fiscal years and are making tax deposits for the current fiscal year to cover this.

Noting that the International Rally Reserve has stayed level for several years, the Board voted in Las Vegas to increase the grant to each international rally from $3,000 to $4,000. BAC also guarantees the $3,000 support from Monaco RV LLC, so that rally masters will not have to worry about whether the company will come through.

Noting both the good financial results for the cur-rent fiscal year and the fact that the rationale for the size of the Operational Reserve adopted in 2005 is no longer relevant, the Board decided to make some small moves to lessen the financial obligations that members incur when they agree to assume leader-ship positions in the Club. The five regional direc-tors will now get the same $150 toward the inter-national rally fee and the payment of two night’s early arrival that the elected officers receive. Also, 50% of the fuel cost over $4.00/gallon will be paid for the five vice presidents, the national director, the alternate national director, and the membership di-rector. It will still cost a bundle to take a leadership position, but that bundle will be a bit smaller.

As always, I would welcome any questions or com-ments you may have.

George

In mid-February Tom and I started out for the Southwest to attend the Beavers Do Las Vegas International Rally, put on by Roy and

Vicki Warren. The many unique seminars, deli-cious food, and interesting entertainment, made this a great rally. Las Vegas was preceded by Rally of Extremes in Death Valley. Jim and Natasha Nichols were the rally masters, and they know the area like the back of their hand. If they do another rally there, try to go; it will be a wonderful ex-perience. After the Las Vegas Rally we attended another great rally, Traveling The Ol' West, put on by Dan and Bonnie Savard in Tucson. I have always wondered about the different kinds of cac-tus, and now I know. On the cover of the rally book there were several varieties of cactus with the names under them – Bonnie, thanks so much for the beautiful and educational cover.

Elections are now in progress and if you have not already done so, I encourage you to vote. Gerald Farris is running for President. Both Gerald and Glenda already do a tremendous amount of work in support of the club, and Gerald will be an out-standing President for the BAC. My term as your Region 5 VP will be up in at the end of September. I am pleased that Ron Getting who has served as the Director of our Region for the past two years is running for VP. Ron and Dianne are the kind of people who are always there to pitch in no matter how large or small the job. I hope you will vote for and support Ron as our Region's upcoming VP.

This Summer/Fall there are a series of rallies that promise lots of fun:

Aug 22-26: Beavers In Bean Blossom - pre FMCA Convention Rally being held in Bean Blossom, IN during an event with blues, beer tent and great food, then caravan to FMCA.

Aug 27-30: FMCA International Convention in Indianapolis, IN - Mon thru Thurs, de-part Fri 8/31.

Aug 31 to Sept 8: Rolling To Revolution - rolling

rally to the BAC International Rally “Revolution-ary Beavers” from Indianapolis.

Sept 10 to 14: Revolutionary Beavers - BAC Inter-national Rally at Croton Point Park campground, 4 nights camping, 3 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 4 dinners, seminars, and entertainment.

Sept 15 to 20: New England Ramble – the rally will stop in Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, con-tinue on to the Boston, Massachusetts area, and finish in beautiful Quechee, Vermont.

The club offers a wealth of information and ac-tivities for its members through the BAC Web Site, the Forum, and Rallies. I encourage you to visit the Forum on a regular basis to ask technical questions, or just learn from the information that is already out there. And don't forget to check out the Region 5 Board for the latest information on rallies in our region.

Tom & I are looking forward to seeing you on the road.Lynn

BAC Members Only Facebook Group by Lynn Crowley

A BAC members only, Facebook Private Group has been created to provide an infor-mal and secure way for BAC members who are on Facebook to connect with other BAC members while traveling. It might be used to arrange meeting times & locations, or as a method to let others know when you will be in a particular area. See the Private BAC Members Only board on the Forum for information on how to join this group. You cannot search on BAC or Beaver Ambassa-dor Club and find this group. Only members can see the group or any of its information and posts. People who are not members won't even be able to see that the group exists. This is why it is a secure way to discuss travel. For those of you who want to understand a little more about Facebook or create a Fa-cebook account there will be a “How to get started on Facebook” post under the Private BAC Members Only board on the Forum in the near future.A big thank you to Keith Cooper for his time and effort in setting up both of the BAC Face-book pages.

Have You Used the Amazon Portal Yet?(Click on this article to check it out.)

For all of you who shop at Amazon.com, please check this out. BAC now has a "portal" to Amazon shopping. You can find this on the BAC web site. Go to beaveramb.org and click on the Amazon banner in the middle of the page. This will take you to a variety of Amazon shops that might be of inter-est to you. You can click on any shop, and be taken to Amazon (with your personal shopping information available to you.) From here on out, there are no differences between any oth-er Amazon shopping you have done. So why go through the BAC web site? Because Amazon pays us a small commission for each purchase. A lot of small commissions really add up, so be sure and tell all your family and friends to help us out by always using our portal. It does not cost anything extra.

Besides, in addition to the standard Amazon shopping page, you can check out some very interesting Amazon shops, available through our site only. Try the "RV Products and Supplies," special-izing in Beaver needs; the "Amazon Deals" sale items; and don't miss the "BAC Member Amazon Picks" - unique items loved by our members. Be sure to add your own suggestions, too!

So get started and bookmark beaveramb.org as your entry to Amazon.

NATIONAL SCENE: Financial---At their February meet-ing the FMCA Executive Board directed that $1.2 mil-lion in expenses be eliminated from the operating bud-get over the next 12 months. As a cost saving measure FMCA will not be publishing a new edition of our Road Atlas and Travel Guide.Negotiations have started again to achieve a better product in our FMCAssist for our members.Recently there has been a slight increase in FMCA mem-berships. To continue to improve, our members need to continue reaching out to non-members. During your travels this summer extend a welcome to those you meet as you travel the highways.

FMCA’s 88th Family Reunion will taking place in India-napolis, IN August 27-30, 2012. It is an opportunity to explore a vibrant city that offers a multitude of attrac-tions, and to enjoy a slower pace by spending some time in the Amish Country.

FMCA will be kicking off its 50th anniversary celebra-tion during the Indiana convention.

Noting the 50th anniversary, some of you may know that the 2013 summer edition of the FMCA’s conven-tion has been changed from Hutchinson, KS to the Cam-Plex in Gillette, Wyoming, June 19 to 22, 2013. The reason for this change is Kansas law prohibits out of state dealers to sell coaches. The Wyoming complex has been greatly improved, with new air-conditioned buildings, and a large parking area with hundreds of electric outlets for RVs.

Now for a little humor from actual call centers: Be alert; they walk among us, vote, and reproduce.Customer: ‘I’ve been calling 700-1000 for two days and can’t get through; can you help?’Operator: ‘Where did you get that number, sir?’Customer: ‘It’s on the door of your business.’Operator: ‘Sir, those are the hours that we are open.’

INTERNATIONAL (INTO) SCENE: (This is the area of FMCA in which our Beaver Ambassador Club belongs.) This area will have an election to determine who will be our next regional president. There are two candidates for this job, namely; Connie Pool and our own Al Vormit-tag. Many of you know that Sonny Gillespie (“this is the

true story" guy), our current FMCA area vice- president, is being termed out. The next elected VP will serve for a two year period. By the time you read this, the election will have passed and the next area vice-president will have been decided. If Al Vormittag wins the election the whole world will know in short time.

…more humor from Samsung Electronics:Caller: ‘Can you give me the telephone number for Jack?’Operator: ‘I’m sorry, sir, I don’t understand who you are talking about.’Caller: ‘On page 1, section 5, of the user guide it clearly states that I need to unplug the fax machine from the AC wall socket and telephone Jack before cleaning. Now, can you give me the number for Jack?’Operator: ‘I think it means the telephone plug on the wall.’

CHAPTER SCENE: At the Indianapolis FMCA convention, in August, the Governing Board will meet to do its annu-al business. As national director I will be attending that meeting as always and report the major items of business at the next BAC corporate meeting. The next corporate report will be at the Croton-on-the-Hudson International BAC meeting, in September, and the important items will be printed in the following issue of Beaver Tales.

…and finally from RAC Motoring Services:Caller: ‘Does your European Breakdown Policy cover me when I am traveling in Australia?’Operator: ‘Does the policy give you a clue?’

…‘til next time, stay alert my friends and keep those wheels rolling, but take time to smell the roses. Safe travels.

Germiest Place Can Affect RVers from RV travel.com

What's one of the germiest places in America? It may surprise you. Believe it or not, the worst thing to grab if you're trying to avoid a cold (or other illnesses) is the fuel pump handle.

You can thank University of Arizona's "Dr. Germ," Charles Gerba, a microbiologist who lead a study where common areas were tested for bugs. Of the pump handles checked, 71% were "highly contaminated" with nasty germs, while escalators rang up with only 43% bug rates. Vending ma-chine push-buttons had a 35% contamination rate.

Wiping with sanitizer after coming into contact with question-able surfaces can help. But another idea effectively kills two birds with one stone: Diesel fuel has an odor that really clings, and many don gloves before fueling the rig. Ward off diesel (or gasoline) odor at the same time you ward off bugs.

Wheels Just Keep On Spinningby Mary Findlay

As you careen over a Colorado pass high in the moun-tains, a loud bang interrupts your enjoyment of the vast array of wild flowers and snow covered peaks. Wasn’t the tire treatment you have been faithfully putting on the tires supposed to protect against such maladies? Bottle labels are full of broken promises so let’s take a look at the proper care of tires and keep those wheels spinning.

Tire Care: Tire manufacturers recommend the following care:1) Drive 50 to 100 miles a month. As tires spin the natu-ral oil is brought to the surface where it lubricates and protects tires against drying and cracking. 2) Clean tires three to four times a year with a light scrub pad like 0000 steel wool or a SOS pad. Tires naturally ox-idize. That oxidation must be removed to prevent them from dying and cracking. 3) Avoid the use of any cleaner that is a degreasing agent like liquid dish soaps or orange based cleaner. Over time and continued use, these agents break down rubber weak-ening its structure, which could result in a blowout. Baby shampoo or powdered laundry detergent are preferable.

Never use powdered laundry detergent to clean the rest of your coach. Most contain fillers, usually sawdust, which scratches the paint.

Tire Treatments: Dish soap to wash tires + the addition of a petroleum based tire treatment = blowout condi-tions. It may take a few years, but the continued use of these two products will find you pulled over on the side of the road nursing a flat tire. Most tire treatments con-tain petroleum distillates that work 24/7 to deteriorate

the tire. When you need to loosen a rusty screw what do you grab? WD40 right? It contains petroleum distillates, which dissolves rust, adhesive and rubber.

Keep those wheels spinning: Wheels usually are alumi-num, mag or sealed. Know your wheel type before apply-ing a metal polish. The abrasive action of metal polishes removes the sealant on sealed wheels, which have a shiny appearance. Clean these wheels with a mild cleanser.

Shine, clean and polish aluminum or mag wheels with an aluminum polish. A good polish removes brake dust and oxidation and leaves behind a shiny wheel.

*A tip from Mary. Pick up several sponge paint brushes at the hardware store. The tips are thin and slide under the lip of the wheel and around wheel nuts. Then nab a few cotton toilet bowl brushes from the grocery store or jani-torial supply store. They make cleaning brake holes easy.

Buyers beware: When purchasing new tires insist on tires with a manufacturing date of no more than six months prior to purchase. The lifespan of a tire is around five years. Time spent sitting in a warehouse counts towards this to-tal time despite what the tire salesman tells you. (ed. note: To find the age of your tires, check the 10-12 digit DOT number on the sidewall. The last four numbers represent the week [1-52] and year the tire was made.)

Mary Findley is owner of Mary Moppins, a line of clean-ing tools, protectants and eco friendly cleaners. She is au-thor of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Green Cleaning” and a sustainable living coach. Her cleaning tips appear in magazine such as Rachael Ray, Real Simple and This Old House. Reach Mary through her website www.go-clean.com or call 800-345-3934.

Note On Aloft In Albuquerque

Members thinking about going to the 2013 Balloon Fiesta rally need to take into ac-count something special about the date for registration. The rally ad says that we are limited to 51 spaces, but we have to pay 50% of the fee for the rally shortly after October 1, 2012, We won’t pay for very many, if any, more spaces that we have people registered. After that, the Balloon Fiesta can sell spaces to other groups or individuals, and we can get additional spaces (up to the 51 coach ca-pacity of the area) only on a space available basis. So if you are thinking about attending, make sure you sign up well before October 1. 2012. (There is only a $10 fee for cancellation after that until a few months before the rally, and that is waived if your space is filled.)

OVERLAND INSURANCE UPDATEThe arrangement with Overland Insurance Services has been a real bright spot in the BAC finances; we’ve had two recent months where the income has been over $1000. Members report that they get very good service from Ron Jarvie and his people, and often they can save money. So we urge you to give them a crack at your business. Just click on the link on the BAC website (www.beaveramb.org). And since you don’t have to be a BAC member to give Overland a try, encourage your friends with RVs to use the link for a quote.

URGENT! Please keep your address/phone/email infor-mation current by using this form or the Internet.

Welcome to our 946 BAC members, with a very special wel-come to 60 new members processed since submissions were due for the Spring Beaver Tales three months ago! This is

the “best” growth rate we have experienced in some time. Thanks so much to everyone for sharing your enthusiasm for a super club, your recruiting efforts are definitely appreciated! With a quick email mes-sage or phone call to me, with name/address/phone/eMail informa-tion, I’ll eagerly follow up on your contacts. Remember, you can now welcome your close friends with a non-Beaver diesel coach, by spon-soring them for membership in BAC. The requirement of BAC mem-bership to post messages, as well as to access all areas of the Forum, is understandably necessary. Every password request is verified to de-termine current membership in both BAC and FMCA (required for all motor home chapters). Otherwise, our great Technical Volunteers would be on duty 24/7!

We hope you have checked the updated Membership Directory on the Forum. Be certain you have requested your Forum membership, which will allow you to go to General Boards, then Private BAC Mem-bers Only, click on the second Sticky: BAC Membership Directory. This will give you the link to open the Directory on our protected Website. The current addresses are listed for all current members to date through the first of April.

We surely hope you have carefully checked the upcoming rallies; there is undoubtedly one in an area where you have always wanted to visit! It is very important to send a deposit to the Rally Masters as quickly as possible. Rallies have a tendency to fill quickly, but waiting lists can of-ten be accommodated, due to illness, as well as various unplanned and unexpected difficulties encountered by some of the early registrants, requiring cancellation.

Mother Nature has provided many challenges across the country, our hope and special wish is that you have satisfactorily survived her wrath. Let’s all look forward to the beauty of summer with an invigo-rating rally schedule!
