Monday morning brought Deception Bay High School students to our school to perform for us. They put on the first half of their musical, Hating Alison Ashley. We were treated to amazing singing, dancing and acting performances. The audiences’ favourite character was the horse. I had a proud teacher moment watching so many of our past DBNSS students performing either on stage or as a part of the Concert Band. I was very happy to hear such wonderful comments from teachers and parents about how well behaved our audience was for the duration on the musical. We certainly hope we have DBSHS back for another performance this year. Well done teachers and students from both of our schools.

Principal Newsletter Term 2, Week 6 Positive Behaviour for Learning The school continues to promote our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program as a key strategy to provide an environment conducive to learning. Each week we have a specific behaviour that is taught to students in a PBL lesson, promoted on assembly and rewarded through house cup rewards points. This week the students have been learning about our rule: “I am Respectful”. They have been learning that being respectful means to show consideration or politeness to someone or something and that it is important because it shows that one values another as a person Staffing We welcome Ms Kerry Larson who has joined our staff this week as Master Teacher. Kerry joins us from Beachmere State School. She will be taking up the position left vacant when Mrs Leming moved schools.

Congratulations to everyone who ran at the Redcliffe District Cross Country on Tuesday at Pine Rivers Park. The behaviour and sportsmanship of the children competing was outstanding. Outstanding effort by Sarah Strang and Bailey Perkins for finishing in the top 6 and being selected in the Redcliffe District Team to compete at the Sunshine Coast Trials on June 5 at Maroochydore. Our 12yrs boys’ team of Bailey, Lachlan Mikulec and Robertson Tusi Tofu also picked up a bronze medal in the teams event. Great job boys! Well done to Mrs Kristy McDonald, Mrs Ruth Seeley and Mr Gary Maginnis for your efforts with the team. STUDENT SAFETY We are concerned that members of the community are using the main driveway into the school and accessing the cul-de-sac as a pick up and drop off zone. Please refrain from driving into this zone as this compromises the safety of our students as they regularly walk across this area. Thank you for your immediate cooperation. Kind Regards, Michael Hoey Principal

We are having an extremely busy Term 2 in Prep B. In English, we have been exploring the book Bear and Chook and learning how to do an oral retell of the story. We are now beginning to look at Bear and Chook by the Sea and students are excited to be writing about events in the story. Students are also doing an excellent job of learning their sight words and developing their reading and writing. In Science, we are learning about materials and their properties. We have been exploring many different objects and the materials they are made of. This week we will be testing whether these materials are waterproof. It is so exciting to see the students in Prep B so passionate about their learning. This term we also had our Mother’s Day afternoon in our classroom. It was lovely to have so many of our mothers attend for an afternoon of pampering. The students were excited to give their Mum’s a hand massage, paint their nails, make them a necklace and a card and paint a Mummy and Me portrait.

On Friday the 11th of May, Year 3 had a special visitor, Mr Paul Raymond, who came to talk to the students about ANZAC Day. Mr Raymond spoke to the students about his father who had served in the National Service between mid-1950’s and the late 1960s. He showed the students the medals that his father had been awarded and showed them where he wears them when he marches now that his father has passed away. The students were very excited to listen to Mr Raymond as we have been talking about how we can keep the memory of our soldiers alive. We decided that marching in ANZAC Day parades and wearing our family members medals, if we have them, is an excellent way to show our respect and

remembrance of the soldiers who gave their lives so that we can live the way we do.
