Welcome to NHC Adult, Community and Family Learning

The Adult & Community Learning (ACL) team has a long standing commitment to the community and we hope that you will agree that the new 2012 brochure offers excellent opportunities whatever your ambitions.

For our new and existing learners we aim to provide opportunities to try a variety of subjects delivered in a way that can be fitted into a busy lifestyle. Our courses take place during the day, in the evenings and our workshops are offered on a variety of days, including Saturday.

Whether you want to learn for pleasure, for personal development, enjoy fun activities with your children, learn for work, increasing your career prospects or returning to work after a break, we have a course suitable for you. ACL offers learning opportunities at a large number of local community venues, allowing for learning on your doorstep. Specifically designed for adults and families, the courses are informal, welcoming and fun with the opportunity for progression to accredited learning.

Why learn with us?Many of our learners return year after year, to learn new skills, develop existing ones, progress academically and to improve their employability prospects.

• Learning is proved to keep the mind agile and healthy, regardless of age• It can be a way to gain new confidence and discover talents you never knew you had. • It’s a great way to have fun and meet like minded people.• Learning new skills, improves employability opportunities.

We hope that you will find a course that meets your interests. If you would like to receive more information about a specific course, please contact us and we will be pleased to help. Enjoy your learning experience with us at North Hertfordshire College!

Adult Learners WeekAdult Learners Week is taking place from 12th to 18th May. It is the UK’s largest festival of learning giving adults the opportunity to try a skill or activity which they might have not done so in the past.

Adult Community Learning will be running a series of tasters to celebrate the event so look out for our brochure at college receptions and local venues from April.

Would you like to run a course for your local community group?

Over the years we have successfully worked with a number of local community organisations within North Hertfordshire, developing courses specifically tailored to meet their needs and interests. These are run at a local venue convenient for the organisations or group. If you can’t find the right course, but you have enough enquiries or learners with a specific interest, we may be able to organise a course for you.

To find out more, contact:The Adult, Community Learning TeamCall us on: 01462 650271or email us at: [email protected]

Course Fees

All our courses are offered at competitive prices. Where funding is available through Hertfordshire Adult and Family Learning Service (HAFLS) or other funding bodies, courses are offered at reduced rates and in some cases free of charge. Unfortunately we are unable to offer a fee remission owing to the fact that community courses are heavily subsidised, however we hope the fee charged for these courses encourages you to participate.

You must be 19+ to be eligible for our courses, with the exception of the Family Learning courses.

North Hertfordshire College is dedicated to providing learning for all. We will ensure that individuals and local communities have equal access to our learning programmes and facilities and we are committed to the fair treatment of all our learners to achieve their maximum potential.

North Hertfordshire College, Adult & Community learning team work in funding partnership with HAFLS. Hertfordshire Adult and Family Learning Service (HAFLS) aim to provide learning opportunities to those who are most in need or have least opportunity to achieve formal and informal qualifications. This enables the Adult and Family Learning in the Community courses to be subsidised.

The Children’s UniversityThe Children’s University is a national organisation that provides 7 to 14 year olds with exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours. The North Hertfordshire Children’s University is now part of this organisation. We celebrate achievement and reward participation through our certificates and graduation ceremonies. Children are given their own passport to learning in which they are encouraged to collect stamps to support hours of accredited learning towards our nationally recognised awards.

Raising children’s aspirations is important to us and we aim to develop the understanding that learning is not limited to the school day and that learning can lead to better places in life. Contact us if you would like to find out how your organsation can get involved by emailing [email protected].
