LAURA SUTHERLAND, BA BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AT NORTH HIGHLAND COLLEGE UHI, THURSO CAMPUS.
BA Business Management student Laura Sutherland from Thurso was terrified of being the ‘old’ one in her class and found it hard to come back into education having worked since leaving school. Laura was very surprised on her first day at the North Highland College UHI: “It wasn’t as bad as I thought, I fitted in straight away and I actually found others to be in the same position as me in that they were returning to education.”Getting the qualification to go with her experience came naturally to Laura, “I really enjoyed what I was learning, having been a manager I found that I had a good understanding already and I could put the work and theory together quite easily. It was certainly hard work but definitely worth it and now I have a degree!”
sTUDENTSTORY
Laura’s advice for students:Going away to study was not an option for me as I have three kids so having a university on my doorstep was a huge benefit. Definitely do it, it’s not as scary as you first think but it does take a lot of time and commitment but it is all worth it in the end - especially when you get that certificate in your hand.

CHRIS DOAKE, EMPLOYABILITY PROGRAMME IN CONSTRUCTION (EPIC) AT NORTH HIGHLAND COLLEGE UHI, THURSO CAMPUS.
STUDENTSTORY
Eight of the ten students that went out on placement have now consequently secured full time employment in the construction industry.
Employability Programme into Construction (EPIC) student Chris Doake from Thurso had been working part time with a local joinery company when he saw the new EPIC course advertised. “I wanted to start doing construction and joinery work full time so when I saw that the course included the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card I applied straight away.”The CSCS card gives students the industry accreditation required to work on construction sites. The course also includes a six weeks work experience within the construction industry and Chris found his work placements to be invaluable; “I really enjoyed the work placements and how you just fitted in with what they were already doing, you
just had to get stuck in with them straight away. On my second work placement with Norscot I was offered a full time, permanent job with them which I accepted right away.”
Chris’ advice to students:If you have an interest in construction you should definitely use this course as a first step into the industry. The classes are really good but the best part for me was having the opportunity to network and learn from local construction firms and if you impress them enough they might just offer you a job.

KENNA ROSS, HNC MUSIC AT NORTH HIGHLAND COLLEGE UHI, ALNESS CAMPUS.
HNC Music student Kenna Ross from Nairn was really nervous about starting her course at the Alness campus but after her induction she fell in love with the Creative Centre based at Alness point. “I really didn’t want to come to College and I had all intentions of leaving after the induction but now I wish I could do it all over again.” Students are encouraged to develop their live performance skills through playing at gigs throughout the year and bands within the College are set up for these performances. Kenna is a part of Almost Folk, a pop folk band with fellow college students. Highlighting her favourite parts of the course Kenna said, “I loved the opportunities for gigging it really brought me out of my shell. We have played at the Fringe, XPO North, Celtic Connections and will be playing at Belladrum this year.”
Kenna’s advice for students: Go for it! It has been a great year and I am really going to miss everyone. Make good use of the gigs and performances you will do throughout your year and use the techniques that the tutors give you for making contacts and networking.

Our engineering, technology and energy faculty is committed to providing students with ‘as real as it gets training’ in an up-to-date, practical setting with excellent industrial facilities.
INDUSTRY REPLICATED FACILITIESOur Engineering, Technology and Energy Centre (ETEC), is the largest and best equipped of its type in the North of Scotland. Based at our Thurso campus, this is where we deliver engineering programmes from introductory to honours degree level and modern apprenticeships in partnership with employers.
Engineering, Technology & Energy CLOSE LINKS WITH EMPLOYERS
We work closely with local businesses to ensure we are training you to industry standard, so you can gain the skills and attributes that are really valued by employers. As a result, many companies offer our students work placements, apprenticeships and traineeships which can lead to employment. In fact, some companies do not advertise, and instead recruit there employees directly from college engineering programmes.
OUTSTANDING STUDENT SUCCESSWe encourage our students to build on the skills they have gained with us, by competing for prestigious engineering awards. In the past, our students have been awarded Apprentice of the Year at the IMechE Engineering Craft Competition and SECTT awards. We’re extremely proud to say our students have won awards not only for the North of Scotland but also at national level.

GREGOR MACLEAN, BENG (HONS) MECHANICAL AND ENERGY ENGINEERING AT NORTH HIGHLAND COLLEGE UHI, THURSO CAMPUS.
sTUDENTSTORY
Graduate Gregor McLean recently completed the BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Energy Engineering with North Highland College UHI, Thurso campus. Originally from Thurso, being able to study engineering at home really appealed to Gregor and he was also able to receive a bursary to help finance his studies. Gregor’s advice to other students:“Look into all options of sponsored student schemes. I was sponsored by Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd to complete my Honours degree and this provided me with the financial stability required to study full time.”
Gregor was able to complete his degree whilst working in an engineering environment which he felt gave him a better all-round view to the subject however it was also the support of his tutors which helped him to completed his degree:
The tutors are hands-on and available whenever needed which was great and they were able to explain theory to me in person when required and this style of teaching is one of the main reasons I feel I was able to complete my course.

Environmental Science student Alan from Canisbay works part time at DSRL and studies full time at the College. “I chose to study at NHC as it was close to where I lived, so I had the support of my family and friends. There was the added bonus that it’s so close to Dounreay where I could gain valuable work experience for the future.” The Environmental Research Institute (ERI) based in Thurso is home to around 40 researchers who specialise in different projects.
STUDENTSTORY
Alan’s advice to students: The flexibility of my course is really good and my location of study which is split between the College and the ERI. The ERI is great as there is a wealth of experience that I can call upon for advice when I need it. Come and visit the area first and have an open mind.

I would definitely recommend coming to North Highland College UHI to study care. The Alness campus is small, but we're like a family. I have made really good friends here and love how close our class has become.

KATE HENDERSON, SVQ LEVEL 3 SUPERVISION, LEADERSHIP AND HOSPITALITY WITH WORK PLACE AND NORTH HIGHLAND COLLEGE UHI.
Work based student Kate was the first person in the highlands and islands to complete the SVQ Level 3 Supervision, Leadership and Hospitality course. The course, different to traditional learning allows the students to learn at their place of work and complete units set out by the SQA.Kate was delighted to have achieved the qualification and said, “It is a great way of learning and is completely different to school as it doesn’t even feel like you are studying.”
Kate’s advice to others looking for a qualification in the hospitality industry is:If you work in the hospitality industry you should definitely do it. All my learning was done at my work place where I was doing the practical sides of things and then I completed the theory work after.

RURAL STUDIES
HELPING YOU REACH YOUR FULL POTENTIALOur equine students are encouraged to enter competitions and participate in shows, which enables them to further develop their practical abilities and is also an opportunity to network with professionals within the industry. To endorse our students’ academic capabilities and enhance employment prospects we also prepare them for British Horse Society Examinations.
WORK ALONGSIDE SKILLED PRACTITIONERS IN INDUSTRY SETTINGSOur gamekeeping students use modern technology to take tissue samples from fallen deer which they send to PhD research students at our Environmental Research Institute for analysis. Using the latest mobile technology, our gamekeepers can then download the data and advise their Estates on the supply of essential minerals to their deer stock.
VALUABLE OPPORTUNITIESOur lecturers use a blended learning approach to teaching which is a combination of learning methods. Veterinary Nursing Students can expect lots of interactive lessons with guest lectures and practical tasks, inspiring field trips to the Exotic Animal Rescue Centre and the SSPCA as well as opportunities to observe industry practitioners such as animal dentists, physiotherapists, farriers and learn through guest speaker sessions.
United by its passion for the health and welfare of animals, enriching the rural environment and protecting our natural heritage, our rural studies provision includes equine studies, veterinary nursing and gamekeeping.

CALLUM LOW, MODERN APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 2 IN GAMEKEEPING WITH THE NORTH HIGHLAND COLLEGE UHI, THURSO CAMPUS.
Callum recently had great success at the 2015 LANTRA awards. Callum was awarded with Overall Winner, Modern Apprentice of the Year and Game and Wildlife learner of the Year. On receiving the awards at the LANTRA ceremony Callum said, “I am delighted to win this award. It is an honour and culminates what has been a challenging but very rewarding year for me working as a gamekeeping apprentice at Invermark Estate. I would like to thank my employers Lord Dalhousie, for giving me this opportunity as well as my tutors and mentors at North Highland College UHI. I believe that winning this award will give me the recognition I need to go on and succeed in my chosen profession.”
Callum’s advice to students thinking of entering into the gamekeeping world is: If you enjoy the outdoors and lots of variety then gamekeeping could be for you. Every day is different especially with the weather! Shooting and fishing have always been a passion for me so I always knew that this is what I wanted to do.

Golf Management student Cameron has had a very unique university experience as he was one of five students chosen in 2015 to visit the North Highland College UHI’s sister college in Dayton Ohio Sinclair Community College.
I was lucky enough to be one of five students from North Highland College, which is part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, to travel to Dayton, Ohio.
“The objective of the trip was to compile a comparative study of the two Colleges and give recommendations that North Highland could use to enhance itself.”The trip was open to students who sit on the College’s learner council with senior management. Students spent eight days in America and got involved in both on and off campus activities but found one of the biggest differences to the student experience between the two campuses was that the students in America have course fees to pay for. “As well as learning about how I could help improve North Highland College I also learned how I could improve myself both academically and socially. Overall my trip was both educational and exciting and one that I won't ever forget!”
