NHD Judging Process On Saturday, judges will ask you questions about your research, your topic, your thesis, and your project itself. What are judges looking for? Here is a list from the Wisconsin Historical Society: Does this student’s work demonstrate historical research and scholarship? Does the student make an argument about the impact or historical significance of their topic in history? Does this student’s entry communicate his or her ideas in an organized and effective way? Does this student’s project reflect careful and reasoned work? What questions will they ask? While I can’t predict the exact questions, here are a few to consider … What was the most interesting tor important thing that you learned while researching? What made you choose this topic? What institutions did you visit to gather your information? What improvements can you still make on your project? What other material do you think you will look at to further your project if you advance to state? How did your thesis evolve from the time that you started your research to the point when you actually started assembling your project? What is your most important source, and why? How did primary sources help you understand your topic? As you researched, what surprise you the most about this topic? What was the most difficult aspect of your research? How does your topic relate to the NHD theme? How does your topic relate to what was going on nationally (or regionally if the topic is a national theme) at the time? Can you briefly describe how you created your __________? How did you divide the work among group members? How do you think your topic influenced history? You may also get questions specific to the content of your topic, depending on the judges. EXHIBITS, PERFORMANCES, DOCUMENTARIES – Do not forget four copies of your process papers and annotated bibliographies. Make sure they you have a title page and they are neat, edited, and perfect!
