A PUBLICATION OF THE HOSPICE & PALLIATIVE CARE GROUP, INC.

Niagara Hospice opened a resource center in the city of Lockport in February. It is a commu-nity based center that provides information in a friendly and home-like atmosphere to people interested in learning about hospice related ser-vices. Resources include education materials that cover hospice services as well as trained staff and volunteers who are available to personally an-swer questions with the goal of educating more Niagara County residents about all that Niagara Hospice has to offer.

The Niagara Hospice Circle of Hope program is also stationed at the Resource Center, relo-cating from its previous site on Sunset Drive in the Town of Lockport. Circle of Hope provides grief counseling outreach to the community. Professional outreach counselors provide educa-tional workshops, informational meetings, indi-vidual and group counseling, and support groups.

These services are available to everyone in the community, whether or not they have ever expe-rienced hospice care.

Niagara Hospice Director of Outreach Services, Chris Gress, PhD said, “We are excited about this move and the opportunity to bring our services closer to the community. Our outreach clients now have a place designed with their needs in mind.” Gress further said that the ease of access to the Resource Center will hopefully encourage people to learn more about hospice, even before they may need hospice care.

Centrally located at the Ulrich City Centre at 175 Walnut Street in Lockport, the Resource Center is in a highly visible location and on a bus route. For more information about the Resource Center or grief counseling services, call the cen-ter at 280-0777.

Goals of the course include understanding the role faith plays in one’s well-being; rituals and beliefs of different faiths; role of hos-pice chaplains and when to refer; skills in taking spiritual history and address-ing issues; caring for the whole person; addressing end-of life care. [He] rightly corrected me stating this would be an opportunity to step into medicine. My experience at Hospice allowed me to do just this, immers-ing myself in the emotional and spiri-tual aspects of medicine that are often overlooked by health care providers.”

Spirituality in Medicine student Duc Chung visited Niagara Hospice patient Robert “Rick” Smith. Duc was born in Viet Nam and left with his mother when he was five and Rick served in the Viet Nam War. The two hit it off as they began to compare notes about Vietnamese places, culture, food and customs. Rick was very grateful to have met Duc and asked him to visit again. The next time Duc visited he brought some food from a Vietnamese restaurant in Buffalo. Rick was delight-ed with the food and the conversation.

Spiritual Care Coordinator Mark Au-ernhamer said Duc graduated in May from UB Medical School and will serve his residency at the University of Cali-fornia, San Francisco. “Duc will make an excellent MD with his caring and outgoing manner,” states Auernhamer.

The Hospice and Palliative Care Group, Inc. Mission Statement:

“ The Hospice and

Palliative Care

Group is dedicated

to providing the

right care, in the

right place, at the

right time.”

Armed Forces Day celebrated Niagara Hospice celebrated Armed Forces

Day with the American Legion Riders, Wheat-field Post #1451 on May 21. The riders visited the Niagara Hospice Campus in the spirit of Niagara Hospice’s year-round We Honor Veterans initia-tive. Staff, volunteers and the community hon-ored veterans and service personnel with a brief ceremo-ny at the Ser-vice Memo-rial Wall in the Niagara Hos-pice Memorial Gardens. A hot dog cook-out was en-joyed following the ceremony where veter-ans, staff, volunteers and hospice patients were able to meet with the American Legion Riders.

“The Legion Riders are honored to be able to assist Niagara Hospice in gratitude for the special

care they provide for our Veter-ans. This is an organization that truly understands the needs and the respect that Veterans deserve throughout their lives,” says Sam Reeder, Director of the Greater Niagara American Legion Rid-ers. The riders raised over $400 through 50/50 raffles and reg-istrations to benefit Niagara

Hospice. Donations of clothing and personal care items were also collected for Jammies for GIs.

Hospice physician board certified

Niagara Hospice assistant medical di-rector Dr. Sarina E. Bax-DeBiaso became Board Certified in Hos-pice and Palliative Care Medicine last Novem-ber and is one of only twenty-five surgeons nation-ally certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Hospice and palliative medicine is a rela-tively new subspecialty, indicating increased attention to end of life care that is needed in our current medical system. Dr. Bax-DeBiaso said that obtaining certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine has been a goal of hers since she began working with Niagara Hospice in September 2006. She said: “Through con-tinued educational development and a personal and professional strive for excellence, we at Niagara Hospice will continue attempts to pro-vide our best care to patients and their families during a very critical and often distressing time.”

Information about the certification can be found on the American Board of Surgery website at www.absurgery.org from the Specialties tab. Select Hospice & Palliative Medicine Overview for details.

Hospice staff and modern technology make family’s holiday wish come true

Thanks to the Niagara Hospice IT Department staff and interdisciplinary team, Niagara Hospice patient Ruth Donovan was able to visit via Skype technology with her son Jack over the holidays. After Jack moved to Arizona seven years ago, Ruth has not been able to visit her son’s home. Via Skype she was able to tour his house as well as visit with him. Ruth said she was extremely honored and pleased to be the first Niagara Hospice patient to utilize the IT department services for this very special family visit.

Eleventh year for Camp HopeThe Circle of Hope program of Niagara Hospice will

hold its 11th Camp Hope for grieving children August 26 - 28 at the YMCA’s Camp Kenan in Barker. Offered to chil-dren throughout Western New York who have lost a loved one through death – whether or not they ever received hos-pice care — the camp is FREE for children age 7 to 13.

Camp Hope is staffed by professional counselors, trained volunteers and a nurse who is on hand for the entire week-end. During the camp weekend, children learn to express their grief through many activities such as yoga, karate, arts and crafts, pet visits, and a memorial bonfire. Outdoor recreation like rock wall climbing, making and eating S’mores around the campfire, swimming and nature walks are also enjoyed.

“When someone they love dies, children look to a trusted adult for support,” says Camp Hope Director Linda Bazinet. “We often overlook the fact that children react differently than an adult to the death of a loved one. At Camp Hope, children share their feelings with their peers and realize they

Niagara Hospice thanks the fol-lowing community groups, organizations and individuals that have shown their support of the hospice mission:

Events2011

Hospice Dash growsThe 3rd Annual Hospice Dash will be

held on Saturday, September 24 with the

addition of a new half-marathon course.

Runners will pass many historic sights on

their 13.1-mile run while enjoying spectac-

ular views of the Lower Niagara River and

Lake Ontario. Race organizers encourage

the entire community to come out and

cheer on runners and walkers alike. Local

service organizations and volunteer groups

are assisting with the event, and students

from area schools are invited to bring their

marching bands and pep squads to strate-

gic locations along the route to motivate

and encourage competitors. Special ac-

commodations have been made with Old

Fort Niagara that will allow the race to

include a loop inside the fort compound

where runners will pass within feet of

the many historic buildings including the

famous Old Fort Niagara Castle.

The 2010 Hospice Dash raised $6000 to

support the mission of Niagara Hospice,

raising over $10,000 to date. For more

information, or to register for the 2011 5K

Run/Walk or Half-Marathon visit www.

HospiceDash.com. All proceeds benefit

Niagara Hospice.
