Dear All,

September 2011 is a month of celebration for NNN but as some of our cousins across the Atlantic are fleeing from Hurricane Irene, we are reminded that September 11th is the 10th anniversary of the day that changed America and the world forever.

Where were you and what were you doing as the 2 planes hit the Twin Towers? I was at work having returned from my lunch hour and my manager came rushing up to me asking if I wanted to call my friends in America? I had just returned from annual leave in New York the previous month and as I wondered back into the staffroom, I watched with disbelief and incredulity at the tv scene before me. I did try calling but could not get through. I watched the news all night, fell asleep with the phone in my hand and woke at about 4am. That’s when I finally got through. I had had a strange urge to pray for my host that morning and didn’t know why until I spoke to him.

He was on his way to a work meeting in Manhattan then was told that meeting had been cancelled. He did not journey into Manhattan that morning. There were so many miracle stories as well as stories of human loss.

So in the midst of celebration, we also look back in remebrance. To everyone who last someone to those who survived, helped clear & rebuild Ground Zero - we at NNN continue to support & salute you at this painful time.

We will remember...

Alison

12 months ago, former local BBC radio presenter Trevor Muckett approached Alison Hewitt, CEO of National Nubian Networking with a view to taking the information she received through her networks and distribute it by way of a full colour magazine.

Trevor who hails from Luton in Bedfordshire works full time as a Public Transport Coordinator with his local council. In his spare time, a lot of time is spent pursuing his part-time hobby as a DJ/Radio Presenter and also as a graphics designer.

In 2004, in partnership with BBC Three Counties radio, Trevor was instrumental in setting up a series of programmes which was broadcasted under the banner of ‘Origins’. This project saw 11 Pirate DJ’s being employed by the BBC, trained and given their own shows. It was on his own show where Trevor, working under the name of Blackatan, first met Alison. “Back in the day, I was fortunate to interview Miss Hewitt about her National Nubian Network and our professional relationship grew from there” said Trevor. “At that time, the NNN proved extremely helpful in providing me with content for my show as there was very little in the way of organisations or individuals coming forward with information on the ground”.

After leaving the BBC in 2007, Trevor began pursuing an initiative to set up a national radio station and has met many hurdles along the way. “Lets make no mistake”, he says. “A national radio station broadcasting to the African and Caribbean communities across the UK simultaneously frightens a lot of people. Some think it is too big to achieve, others feel that as a business it won’t make any money

to survive. The politicians, I feel are too frightened to look at this because they feel it would give us too much power. Personally I feel that if we as one community got together, the idea of a national radio station is realistic, extremely realistic and if we had a team of progressive people supporting the project, then I can see no reason why this couldn’t work. Just remember we as African and African Caribbean people have a significant influence in industries like fashion and music, we also have integrated in to British society like no other minority ethnic group”.

A national radio station is something Trevor is not going to rush in to as the structure and funding is something he feels needs careful planning and consideration. In the meantime, Trevor has turned his hand to developing the foundations for what he calls the ‘Bigger Picture’. “So OK, it is likely to cost at least £500,000 per year to broadcast and that is just to broadcast. I am certain that there are some kind individuals and organisations out there who could bankroll this initiative but business plans etc are not my key strength so I decided to try and build a team of individuals with these strengths to see if we can make a go of this. I decided that a way forward was to produce a magazine which would basically reflect the type of content I would like to broadcast on air but in print, hence my forging a partnership with Alison.

“I can clearly remember planning, designing and publishing the first issue. It was 7 pages of unorganised but all the same, relevant news. Since that issue, the content is in my opinion still a little unorganised but the presentation of the magazine is coming on leaps and bounds”.

Amazingly this magazine costs little to produce but relies heavily on the time of Trevor and Alsion. “Like many people, time is something one can rarely give” explains Trevor who uses his skills in computer graphics to design the monthly magazine. “The designing of the magazine takes up quite a lot of my spare time but it keeps the brain active. I am also sure Alison uses a lot of her time making sure the magazine gets the right content, in the right format and reads right before publishing. I must admit though, it is through my commitment to the bigger picture that I have stayed focussed and reached this milestone.

National Nubian News are expanding to reach as many people as possible in their ambition to be the main focal point for news and information. They can be contacted through various mediums like facebook, twitter and have recently set up their own blog www.nationalnubiannews.blogspot.com “We are constantly finding that people don’t like deadlines so we decided to set up a blog which could be updated by myself or Alison, anytime, any place, anywhere”.

Their work is far from over, as they try and reach that ‘bigger picture’ “I think the magazine is gradually doing what it is suppose to do”, says Trevor, “but we cant stop reaching for our star”. Trevor is now looking at ways to raise the capital to get the national radio station project rolling, “I understand some people when they say a project of this calibre cannot be sustained, but my goal is to find sustainable ways to ensure we can build a lasting legacy”.

NHS BME NETWORK “THE BIG MOVE” CONFERENCE

The NHS BME Network was launched on 4 June 2010, to be an “independent and effective voice for BME people to ensure the NHS delivers on its statutory duties concerning race equality” and there is much work for us to do to ensure that we deliver on our key aims and objectives.

In his key note speech on “The Big Society” David Cameron states: “It’s about liberation-the biggest, most dramatic redistribution of power from elites in Whitehall to the man and woman on the street”. We have spent the past two years assessing the health climate for BME staff, patients service users and clients and have shown that we have been on the receiving end of a raw deal. Furthermore, all the available evidence to date suggests that in the new healthcare climate things are more likely to deteriorate rather than improve for BME people.

GPs in partnership with local authorities, will need to determine what services are required to meet the needs of BME communities and provide a mechanism to effectively address ethnic health inequalities. However, the evidence shows that GPs are confused about how much responsibility they will actually have for Equality and Diversity and they openly admit they do not have the skills and knowledge to deliver on this important agenda.

By contrast the Equality Delivery System (EDS) will now become the main“tool” by which NHS organisations are charged with delivering Equality and Diversity and yet for it to be effective, NHS organisations will have to show they have pro-actively engaged and consulted BME staff and BME communities a task they have failed to achieve to date. Furthermore, the Public Sector Equality Duty published more recently appears to be at odds with the requirements of the EDS given for example organisations are no longer required to show how they have used public engagement to make decisions regarding equality and diversity or how they intend to monitor progress against their objectives.

It is time for “The Big Move”, we owe it to both this and the next generation of BME people. The main aim and objective of this conference is for us to, debate, plan and shape how “The Big

Move” can and will be achieved.

Felicia was born in South London to Nigerian parents and is the first of five children. Her creative streak had been apparent from a very young age

as she was always with a pencil in hand, drawing and painting while attending school in Kennington, South London.

Felicia moved to Lagos, Nigeria in her early teens where she continued to develop her artistic flare, designing styles for both friends and herself using her parents’ curtains, not unlike Maria from ‘The Sound of Music’. This obviously got her in trouble with her parents however

this did not dampen Felicia’s love for design.

Felicia returned to England during her late teens to study fine arts at Waltham Forest College in East London. She put her

career and love for design on hold for some years to raise her son. However, the flame for the imaginative was still smouldering and with the support of her family Felicia reignited the flame by obtaining an advanced qualification in interior design at Greenwich Community College, South London.

Felicia taught herself to use a sewing machine and armed with just this and a social network website, Adaora’s (meaning first born daughter of the Onuora family) designs came alive.

Adaora’s unique vogue of combining African print and textures with a variety of different materials is a direct result of Felicia’s distinct

imagination.

It wasn’t long before Felicia started getting orders from people who had seen her creations on the internet or worn by friends and Felicia was soon

showcasing her styles on catwalks in various venues in London.

Felicia’s designs appeared recently on African Fashion Week at Gibson Hall, London, where she showcased her designs for the first time

in a public areana. You can now see the Adaora’s collection at the Ankara Festival 2011, The Gabel 25 Moorgate, London EC2 6AR

and also on Saturday 10th September 2011, Urban Fashion Week in Farringdon, London.

Leading medics are joining forces with national charity Migraine Action to help celebrate Migraine Awareness Week (Sunday 4th - Saturday 10th September) by giving people affected by migraine in the region advice on managing the condition at an event taking place in Wakefield on Saturday 10th September 2011.

It is estimated that one in seven people are affected by migraine, including over 30,000 in West Yorkshire. The World Health Organisation has classified migraine as amongst the top twenty most disabling lifetime conditions with symptoms including a severe headache, visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, numbness, speech difficulties, confusion and a sensitivity to light, sound and smell. With no cure available people often have to live with the condition for many years.

To help, Migraine Action, a charity which has been

supporting migraineurs for over 50 years, is able to run a limited number of educational days around the UK each year to enable people to pick up practical tips for managing their own migraine from experts in the field.

Professor Amir Al-Din, who has been leading the headache service at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust for the past 17 years will be giving a presentation on ‘Understanding and managing migraine’. Dr Andrew Dowson, Chairman of Migraine Action’s Medical Advisory Board and Director of headache services at King’s College Hospital, London, will be discussing preventative treatments and giving updates on the latest migraine research. There will also be a number of afternoon workshops including sessions on managing chronic daily headache and Botox® as a treatment for chronic migraine.

Mrs Joanna Hamilton-Colclough,

Director of Migraine Action, says: “Migraine is an extremely common condition yet people can find it very isolating and often suffer in silence, wrongly believing that little can be done to help them. We would invite local people to take a positive step towards managing their migraine by coming along to this friendly and informal event and hearing from two real experts in the field. Many people find that sharing experiences with other local people affected is also an invaluable part of the day.”

The meeting will take place at the Wakefield Town Hall, Wood Street between 9.30am and 3.00pm. There is a nominal charge (£15.00 per person for Migraine Action members,

£20.00 for non-members) with refreshments and lunch included. Pre-booking is essential.

In addition to this event the charity is also hosting a free workshop on ‘Botox® as a preventative treatment for chronic migraine’ for healthcare professionals at the venue on Friday 9th September between 12.00pm - 2.00pm.

For more information and to book a place on either of these two events please call Migraine Action on 0116 275 8317. email [email protected] or visit www.migraine.org.uk/

Shane Collins, Urban Green Fair Director, said “As well as being a fun day out, whatever your age, the Urban Green Fair is a chance to learn about the changes coming to our society and how best to navigate them together. Forewarned is forearmed. Whilst climate change is the reason we should make changes in our lives, peak oil will force us to make these changes.”

“This collective action can be achieved through events like the Urban Green Fair, which help educate and stimulate public support for green initiatives. It brings together local people, and those from further afield, to share knowledge and skills that can help us live more sustainable lives.”

New features at the Urban Green Fair this year include a bigger Spoken Words & Poetry Tent curated by T W Rhino Village and hosted by Inspire Open Mic, Donda Mic, Myndz Community and KMT, finishing with a Poetry Slam Jam hosted by Steve Medeema, as well as a space to mark the 20th anniversary of the formation of CoolTan Arts, a vibrant community arts/political squatted centre in early 90’s Brixton. The 2011 Stephen Lawrence Memorial Lecture with Zaha Hadid

The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust’s 11th Memorial Lecture will take place on the evening of October 4th 2011 in the Jarvis Hall at RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London W1.

This year’s Lecture is delivered by Stirling prize winning architect and global phenomenon Zaha Hadid and will be chaired by RIBA President Angela Brady.

Through her work around the world and her experiences in practice, Zaha will reflect on design and diversity in an ever more competitive global market place.

Although Stephen had his dream of becoming an architect cruelly taken away, hope to ensure that other young people are given every opportunity to fulfil their aspirations is at the forefront of the trust. Through their bursary programme, they aim to help young people, in the UK and internationally, achieve their ambitions of working in construction, design and architecture.

Previous speakers at the annual memorial lecture have included the Prince of Wales, Mayor Boris Johnson, Dr Maya Angelou, Michael Mansfield QC and Lord Richard Rogers.

This year’s memorial lecture is one not to be missed. A limited number of tickets will be available to purchase by calling 0207 307 3699 or visiting http://www.architecture.com/WhatsOn.

Mumia’s Lawyer Visits The UKMumia Abu-Jamal is an award-winning journalist whose conviction in 1982 for killing a policeman aimed to end his years of exposing racism and other corruption. His trial was drenched in racism: while Philadelphia was 43% Black, only two jurors were African-American.

Throughout almost three decades on death row, Mumia Abu-Jamal has continued to speak out against injustice and to organise for his freedom and for that of other prisoners.

Christina Swarns (NAACP* Legal Defence

and Educational Fund), Mumia Abu-Jamal’s lead lawyer, will be in London on 16th September for one day. She will speak about the latest developments in his case. Ms Swarns has been part of the Abu-Jamal legal team for some years. Her submissions on the issue of racism in jury selection were a crucial part of the appeal submitted in May 2007.

Ms Swarns visits just as a new book by Mumia (as he is known to millions) is launched in the UK. Jailhouse Lawyers: Prisoners Defending Prisoners v the USA speaks for the creative and determined movement of prisoners who use the law against the legal establishment. It is published just as prisoners in the US demonstrate their massive movement against prisons as concentration camps of repression, humiliation and other injustice, with work strikes, hunger strikes and other courageous actions, crossing racial divides.

Happy first anniversary NNN, wishing you all the best for the future!

Marcia Long, Exeter

Have you taken the opportunity to nominate someone you know to play a part in carrying the London 2012 Olympic Flame? You would have probably heard or seen the adverts for Olympic Torchbearers. Well, if you haven’t already made your nomination, you have until the 16 September 2011 to do so.

A ballot system will be used to shortlist nominated torchbearers, who will be notified of the outcome during the week commencing 8 August 2011. 8,000 Olympic Torchbearers will be select by 12 judging panels.

OK, I suppose you now want to know who I nominated. I nominated Ian Levy, who following the murder of his 16 year old son Robert, founded the Robert Levy Foundation (RLF) to support the development and promote the safety of young people in the community. The impact of this registered charity has been recognised and Ian continues to work tirelessly in his quest to create and find more opportunities for children and young people.

The RLF has an annual programme comprising;

1. Motor vehicle technology,2. Introduction to film making,3. Fashion designing,4. Job & opportunity fair, and5. Showcase.

The motor vehicle technology, introduction to film making and fashion design courses are delivered in partnership with Hackney Community College over a six week period between July and September. The Job & Opportunity Fair and Showcase of talent are usually delivered at the Ocean and Hackney Empire respectively.

The Job & Opportunity Fair attracts companies and other organisations including the British Army, the emergency services, charities, colleges and universities advertising their vacancies, developmental opportunities, work experience, internships and courses. As well as advertising vacancies, exhibitors were on hand to answer questions about their organisations. Other objectives of

the fair were to provide school children with greater knowledge and understanding of the various job types available to them after leaving school and increasing access to meaningful work experience.

The Showcase is a fusion of song, dance, acting and comedy performed by young people in a celebration of their artistic talent, and to inspire their peers to work hard towards achieving their dreams. Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change

GHANA BRAZIL

V

Ronaldinho Recalled For World Tour In LondonCraven Cottage, the home of Fulham FC, will host the five-time World Champions Brazil for the first time with a glamour friendly on Monday 5th September, when the Brazil World Tour returns to London for a mouth-watering clash with Ghana. The Black Stars arrive back in London following their memorable game against England at Wembley Stadium and their heroics during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and a sell-out crowd is anticipated for the clash against the Seleção. The match is being organised and marketed by the UK arm of sports marketing company Kentaro.

“The Brazilian and Ghanaian National Teams provided some of the most exhilarating football from the World Cup last year and this coupled with their fanatical support should create a fantastic match and occasion at Craven Cottage,“ Kentaro COO Jonathan Hill said. “We are delighted to be able to bring this match to London and are expecting a huge level of interest in the game.

This latest match in the World Tour will provide Ghana and Brazil’s first meeting since the 2007 match in Sweden and follows a sell-out match between Brazil and Germany in Stuttgart.

Brazil have called up 24 players for the friendly. Under pressure coach, Mano Menezes, has recalled Ronaldinho Gaúcho after an absence of nine months from the national team. The forward was in danger of missing Flamengo’s crucial league match against Corinthians on Septmeber 7th. But the Brazilian Football Confederation have already said that players involved in the Brazil game will be free to return and play for their clubs.

Also back are Real Maris leftback, Marcelo, Porto forward, Hulk, and Internacional striker, Leandro Damião. Santos (Porto owned) rightback/midfielder, Danilo, who’s currently with the Under-20s in Colombia, gets his first call up. Out go Fenerbahçe’s André Santos, Fred of Fluminense, and Chelsea’s Ramires.

Menezes is in need of a convincing win. In his first year in charge of Brazil, the coach has yet to beat a side that may challenge his team in the World Cup in 2014. The South Americans have lost to France, Argentina and Germany and have drawn with the Netherlands. Brazil also failed to perform in the Copa America in July going out to Paraguay on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Sally Nyolo

Sally Nyolo comes from the South of Cameroon. She was born in the Eton Land, in the small village of Eyen-Meyong, near the town of Tala, in the Lékié region. She left her homeland at the age of 13 to settle in Paris where she has lived since. Sally built up her professional experience from 1982 to 1994, first as a backing-singer working with numerous French or Africa artists, Jacques Higelin, Sixun, Nicole Croisille, Touré Kunda, and plenty of others…

Then after joining the group Zap Mama in 1993, for their world tour. With Zap Mama she recorded the album “Sabsylma”, and two live records (in Japan, and at Montreux). In 1996, Sally Nyolo recorded her first solo album, entitled “Tribu” (Tribe), published by the Lusafrica Label. All the tracks, sung in Eton (her native tongue), were written and composed by Sally, with the exception of “Tamtam” which she co-wrote with Sylvin Marc.

In June 97, Sally Nyolo received the Discovery 97 prize awarded by Radio France Internationale. The jury, presided over by drummer Manu Katché, afforded this recognition to the album “Tribu”, for its artistic merits, and to Sally Nyolo, as one of the most promising hopes of the new generation of African musicians.

And Sally Nyolo soon went on to prove that she was more than just a promising hope. Sally returned to the studio in the spring of 98 to begin work on a second album entitled “ Multiculti”. Released in May of this year, Sally’s second album not only confirms the young singer’s vocal talent, it also reveals a deep passion for ‘métissage’ (musical and cultural fusion). The young Cameroonian has taken traditional African rhythms and successfully mixed them with other more modern genres, reinventing her musical heritage for the 1990’s. Sally’s hot fusion sound certainly proved a major hit with French audiences, when the young Cameroonian star kicked off her latest tour on May 28th at the legendary New Morning in Paris.

Between August and September 98 Sally Nyolo concentrated on her international career, playing a series of dates across the United States and Canada (where she had already built up a considerable following of fans). When she returned to Europe, Sally embarked upon an extensive tour of Spain and L’Ile de la Réunion, then performed a further series of concerts in France.

In December ‘98 legendary French pop star Jacques Higelin invited Sally to perform as a special guest star at his concert at the “Cité de la Musique” in Paris.

Sally returned to the music news in January 2000, releasing her third album “Beti” (named after an African tribe). Sally’s new album, which was partly recorded in Cameroon, revolved around Bikutsi, a traditional rhythm from the forest regions of central Cameroon. Following the release of her album, Sally embarked upon a mini-tour in the spring of 2000, taking her catchy Bikutsi sound to France, then going on to play to audiences in Germany (in May) and Quebec (in July). But before that Sally brought the house down in her homeland when she performed at the “Rencontres Musicales” in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé (May 1st - May 7th).

The singer kept up a hectic tour schedule throughout the summer of 2001, touring France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland.

Sally returned to the studio in 2002 and her fourth album, “Zaïone” (named after the son she had had the previous year), was released in October of that year. Broadening her musical horizons, Sally mixed her traditional bikutsi with other musical styles on Zaïone and the album included duos with a number of French singers including Nicoletta, Nina Moratto, Muriel Moreno and Jean-Jacques Milteau. Teaming up with her Cameroonian friend Princess Erika, Sally also enjoyed a brief flirtation with reggae on the song”Jah Know”, which was chosen as the first single release from the album. Sally played a series of concerts in Paris at the end of November 2002 and this year the ? star should be hitting the UK in February for a major tour.

After four concerts in Paris in late November at the Opus Café, she kicked off a tour of Germany and Switzerland in March 2003, before jetting off to Japan where she played at the Quattro club in Tokyo on March 19 as part of the Francophone Week initiative. Sally returned to her native

country in May with a series of concerts in Douala as part of the Douala Massao international festival of female singing. Her international career was further boosted in 2004 when she performed in Italy, Belgium and also London at the African Music Festival. And the Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila invited her to duet with him on his album “Conexoes”.

In March 2005, she leant a hand to a David Murray production, “Pouchkine”, which was performed at the Banlieues Bleues festival in the Paris region. Then in June, she opened a studio in Yaoundé and set up her own production company, Tribal Production, with the aim of developing the Cameroon music scene.

In December 2006, Sally Nyolo released her “Studio Cameroon” compilation, an album which had been a personal project of hers for almost eight years. The release of this album marked a new stage in the Cameroonian singer’s career, putting her on the map as a producer and talent-spotter. In 1998, while on a tour of her homeland, presenting songs from her second album, “Multiculti”, Sally had been struck by the poor conditions her fellow musicians were working under and began wondering what she could do to help her compatriots. She promised to return and set up a recording studio in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé, and produce local artists there. Eight years later, after overcoming numerous obstacles, Sally proved she was a woman of her word, opening her recording venue up on Yaounde’s Mont Fébé.

The singer refused to turn her studio into a commercial venture, using it instead as a vital means of producing traditional musicians from the region. On her “Studio Cameroon” compilation, Sally turned herself into a veritable talent-discoverer, tracking down hard-to-find musicians and unearthing up-and-coming young talents she believed in. “Studio Cameroon”, an innovative and audacious project, brought together a mix of artists who bucked the trend for rhythm boxes that had become all the rage on Yaoundé’s urban music scene. Sally’s main aim on “Studio Cameroon” was to show off the incredibly rich rhythmic and instrumental heritage of her multi-cultural homeland - and she more than accomplished her mission, amassing an impressive musical mix on the album!

The “Studio Cameroon” project was filmed by François Bergeron and turned into a fascinating documentary.

National Eczema Week.11th- 18th September 2011Eczema is a chronic skin disorder that involves scaly and itchy rashes. as well as blistering, weeping, or peeling of the skin. Atopic eczema is the most common type. In England, an estimated 5 million or about one in every nine people have been diagnosed with the disease by a clinician at some point in their lives.

The most common type of eczema is known as Atopic Dermatitis, or Atopic Eczema. Atopic refers to a group of diseases with a tendency to develop other allergic conditions such as asthma and hayfever, which are often inherited.

Atopic eczema can affect up to 15% of children in the UK. For more than half of those with the condition it clears up by the time they reach 11 years old, but some people continue to experience symptoms on and off throughout life. With proper treatment the disease can be controlled in the majority of people.

The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but it’s thought to be linked to an overactive response by the body’s immune system to unknown triggers.

In addition eczema is commonly found in families with a history of other allergies or asthma.

Some people may have flare-ups of the itchy rash in response to certain substances or conditions. For some coming into contact with rough or coarse materials may cause the skin to become itchy. For others feeling too hot or too cold, exposure to certain household products such as soap or detergent, or coming into contact with animal dander may cause an outbreak. Upper respiratory infections or colds may also be triggers. Stress can cause the condition to worsen.

At the age of 42, NNN editor Alison Hewitt has been a life-long sufferer, but is more fortunate than many as her eczema is restricted to the hands whereas many sufferers have rashes and blisters on their face and other parts of their bodies.

“I was always aware that my skin was different to those around me, but my family have never made it an issue. I am aware my dad had a little on his legs as I was growing up but it wasn’t until I started primary school that I became really concious of the fact that I had eczema. Other children made hurtful comments or shied away from me, perhaps they felt it was contagious”. She says.

The condition is not contagious and can’t be spread from person to person. Although there is no cure, most people can effectively manage their disease with medical treatment and by avoiding irritants. Which for some is sustainable, but what if your work requires absolute cleanliness at all times? What if you work in the catering industry?

Whether you’re a painter, cook, hairdresser, nurse or even a new mum, washing your hands to wash away germs is a must. But for some, they are scrubbing a bit too often, and it’s leading to an increase in a common, but debilitating condition.

As a Radiographer, the fight against germs is something Alison is no stranger to “I have always worked in a hospital environment and that means the constant washing of hands, application of moisturising creams and alcohol gel before and after patient contact. That amounts to a lot of hand-washing a day”.

Studies show hand eczema is the most common occupational disease, and accounts for up to 80-percent of all cases of skin inflammation. “Many have suggested buying expensive products made from the aloe plant”, said Alison. “Changing my diet, washing my skin with a natural soap with unknown added ingredients, alternative medicines and I have tried every cream & emollient under the sun. It boils down to living a life that includes having eczema at this particular moment in time. It has never stopped me doing anything protective gloves & clothing are always on hand and my partner is very understanding of my skin condition and is not put off by it”.

It is important not to wash hands with normal soap but to use a water dispersible cream (speak to your GP or pharmacist about the options available). The secret is to wash hands in luke warm water and to massage and rub hands together with the cream for several minutes for maximum effect. Ideally, this routine should be performed several times each day. It is better to use a cream via a pump dispenser as this helps keep the cream contamination free. Steroids can also be used for

hand eczema but it is advisable to talk to your GP first.

Some eczema sufferers find their hands are affected by latex and this means that many cannot tolerate wearing rubber gloves to clean and wash up. There are a small, but effective range of washing up products available that are dermatologically tested and can be suitable for sufferers with latex allergy.

“I have met people who have a much worse condition than I have. It has never crept onto my face or into my hair. If you have an understanding GP and are referred to a well-respected and effective dermatologist, they can work wonders by prescribing the best in the current choices of medication and treatments”.

Dry skin is becoming an increasing problem amongst hospital workers with no history of eczema, contact dermatitis or any other existing skin condition.

Websites exist that can offer a lot of help in this regard, for example http://www.eczema.org/
