Relieving Principal’s Message Congratulations to the students and staff for a fantastic start to the Term. So many positive and wonderful things happening within the school, which is very pleasing to see. Our NAIDOC Week Assembly last Wednesday was a wonderful effort by a lot of people, particularly the students. It was pleasing to see so many visitors to our school, supporting NAIDOC Week, our school and the students. Congratulations to our Year 5/6 Mortimer Shield teams who played in the finals at Wagga last Thursday. Our boys played rugby league, while our girls played league tag. The students can be very proud of their efforts. From the 6-10 August 2018 is Education Week. This year’s theme is “Today’s schools – creating tomorrow’s world”. We will be celebrating Education Week at our school next Wednesday 8 August 2018. Parents are most welcome to come to our school on that day. It will commence in the library at 12.15pm with a presentation from Mel Smithwick and Karen Bartlett (Instructional Leaders) on the importance of reading at home and helping children learn to read. Following this will be K-6 open classrooms from 12.45-1.30pm where students will share their thoughts around gratitude from their learning on the Resilience Project. We also welcome you to enjoy recess with your child before classes commence at 2pm. I look forward to seeing you at our school next Wednesday for Education Week. Arrival at School Before 8.30am - We are experiencing an issue with children arriving at the school grounds prior to the before-school supervision roster commencing. This practice poses potential risks to both children and the department. While it is appreciated that many families have two working parents and may find it difficult to delay their departure for work until the school's supervision begins, the school hours are 9.00am to 3.00pm. As an alternative, you may be able to make arrangements with friends or neighbours for the supervision of your children before and after school. Some families in our school who have working parents take turns to take each other's children to school. Whatever arrangements you make, you need to understand that you remain responsible for your child prior to 8.30am when the school’s supervision begins and after 3.00pm, unless waiting at school to catch a bus. The school accepts no responsibility and provides no supervision for students who arrive at school before 8.30am. The Memorandum to Principals from the Secretary, Department of Education clearly states: “It is not the responsibility of schools to provide free child minding services for students for extended periods before and after school.” The main point for parents is a reminder that school starts at 8.30am for a 9.00am class time start. Thank you for your continued support of our fantastic school, great staff and amazing students. Jason Weaven Relieving Principal

The Eat Fresh & Win campaign promotes fruit and vegetables and offers each student the opportunity to win great prizes. Each time a student makes a ‘healthy’ selection from the canteen they are rewarded with a sticker to add to their entry form. Upon collecting 2 stickers, students return their entry form to the canteen and the child is rewarded with a minor prize. The final step is for the Canteen Manager to send all completed entry forms back to the Sydney Markets for the major prize draw..

Jungle Tracks Finale Last week was the final session for our Jungle Tracks Program. The children were involved in different activities using African Drums. They had to echo the lead drummer, start a drumming conversation with another student and experiment with tempo and volume. It was a successful session and all participants were awarded a certificate for their contribution to the storytelling and mindfulness exercises throughout the course. A special thanks to Ali Reed and Laura Johnson for introducing the program to our school, and a BIG thank you to our wonderful students who shared their stories about their journeys to Australia. R. Johnson EAL/D Teacher

Connecting Country Schools I am happy to announce that Lavington East Public School has been included in the Connecting Country Schools (CCS) project, which is delivering upgraded wireless connectivity to more than 900 schools around the state. CCS will upgrade wireless access in the school’s learning spaces, including some outdoor areas. This will assist our teachers with future-focussed teaching, which is preparing our students for digital age jobs and equipping them with skills for a technology-driven future. Improved wireless connectivity will also give students more chances to connect and collaborate, with greater access to online knowledge databases, streaming media, educational institutions and experts. Planning for installation at our school has commenced with the CCS project team from the Department’s IT Directorate, who are managing this project. We are all working together to ensure disruptions during the installation are kept to a minimum. Carly Burns Computer Coordinator

Circus Quirkus Last Tuesday, some students from Lavington East Public School attended the ‘Circus Quirkus’ performance at Albury Entertainment Centre. This event was hosted by the Rotary Club of Albury and sponsored by local business and organisations. The students who attended were well-behaved and reported that they enjoyed the show thoroughly. We even had our very own Brian Warhurst involved in one of the acts. An entertainer in the making! It was a very successful day for all. For more information about Circus Quirkus, please visit http://www.circusquirkus.com.au/ or their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Circus-Quirkus-84240073079/ R. Johnson
