Letter to The Editor

David RitterBus 405 - 447 - 2600Cell 405 - 201 - 3678

Dear Editor, I received my absentee ballot and have a problem with State Question 741. SQ 741 concerns our property taxes. The bottom line is SQ 741 is good for the counties but bad for the taxpayers and especially for our military veter-ans. In my opinion Oklahoma County Assessor Leonard Sullivan’s letter to the editor in The Okla-homan Monday supporting SQ 741 is nothing but a scare tactics. Mr. Sullivan got it all wrong – the tax payers are the real losers in this ballot pro-posal. This proposal, if passed, will prevent tax-payers from claiming property tax exemptions to which they are entitled to by law, if they do not file for them within a certain time period. All tax payers should vote no! All concerned taxpayers should ask Mr. Sullivan and other tax hogs, “why should government work only one way?” If the government discovers that they did not charge CONT. NEXT COL.

CONT. FROM COL 1

you enough on your past year taxes they can go back and claim revenue – even if several years have gone by! . They do this through the, “Tax Rolls Correction Board”. And all 77 counties in the state have one. What is wrong with the taxpayers being given the same rights as their government? SQ 741 is bad for the senior citizens, bad for our veterans bad for business and just plain bad for the taxpay-ers. As a conservative Republican, opposed to further taxation, I am completely surprised that our Republicans in the Legislature put this stinker on the ballot without actually checking out how it hurts the average taxpayers. Vote NO!!!Bobby Cleveland

Sweet and Sour Chicken

1 pound of boneless and skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into 1” chunks 1 egg white 1//4 teaspoon salt2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 10-ounce can pineapple chunks (reserve juice) 1/4 cup juice from the canned pine-apple 1/4 cup white vinegar 1/4 cup ketchup 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (1/4 tea-spoon table salt) 2-3 tablespoons brown sugar 1 Tbsp. plus 1 teaspoon cooking oil 1 red bell pepper, cut into 1 inch chunks 1 yellow bell pepper, cut into 1 inch chunks

In a bowl, combine the chicken with the egg white, salt and cornstarch. Stir to coat the chicken evenly. Let sit for 15 minutes at room temperature or up to overnight in the refrigerator. In the meantime, whisk together the pineapple juice, vinegar, ketchup, salt, and brown sugar. Heat a large frying pan or wok over high heat until a bead of water instantly sizzles and evapo-rates. Pour in the 1 tablespoon of cooking oil and swirl to coat. It’s important that the pan is very hot. Add the chicken and spread the chicken out in one layer. Let the chicken fry, untouched for 1 minute, until the bottoms are browned. Flip and fry the other side the same for 1 minute. The chicken should still be pinkish in the middle. Dish out the chicken onto a clean plate, leaving as much oil in the pan as possible. Turn the heat to medium and add the remaining 1 teaspoon of cooking oil. Let the oil heat up and then add the bell pepper chunks and ginger. Fry for 1 minute. Add the pineapple chunks and the sweet and sour sauce. Turn the heat to high and when the sauce is simmering, add the chicken pieces back in. Let simmer for 1-2 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. Timing depends on how thick you’ve cut your chicken. The best

Kandice Rose DeFordThere is another angel in heaven as Kandice Rose DeFord, 11, of Noble, went to be with Jesus, Saturday October 18.

She was born December 3, 1996 to Tom and Marsha DeFord in Norman. Kandice was an inspiration to oth-ers around her. She drew her strength from the Lord in complete faith that He would take good care of her. Her smile and energy could light up a room. Kandice enjoyed interior decorating, soccer, singing, and playing video games with family and friends. She had a pas-sion for cooking, and made the best cookies and brown-ies. Kandice always had a special place in her heart for the country. She was preceded in death by her loving grandfather, Richard Lee DeFord Sr. Kandice is survived by her parents, Tom and Marsha DeFord; brother, Brandon York; sisters, Shanon York, Jessica DeFord, and Kate Leary; grandparents, Bar-bara Jones, Melton and Linda Jones, and Anita DeFord; uncles and aunts, Tim DeFord, Mike and Sandy DeFord, Danny and Audra Deford, Mike and Sherrie Jones, Paul and Krista Jones; and many cousins. A special thank you to Ashlee, Kaylee, Lindsey, Becky, and Ashton for being such great friends to Kandice. Services will be 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at Lake-side Church of God. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park, under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service. Bearers are Melton Jones, Mike DeFord, Mike Jones, Paul Jones, David DeFord, and Mickey DeFord. A memorial fund in the name of Kandice Rose DeFord has been established at the First State Bank, 1600 W. Lindsey, Norman, 73069. We invite you to share your thoughts and fond memo-ries with our family at www.mem.com.

Dear Aunt Knozy,Color me dumb with a capital D. I recently met this absolutely handsome guy and he took me out on a date. When I asked him about his job he told me he didn’t have a job, that he owned a bank. Later, I found out he does own a bank—an empty piggy bank. Oink! CindyA: I hope you became his Teller—and told him where to go.

Dear Aunt Knozy,As a member of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) it is frustrating to hear, day after day, how many have died in Iraq over the past three years (yes, I am grieved by that but it is for an honorable cause) when almost three times that many die each year from alcohol-related accidents—senseless deaths. Laws aren’t enforced and repeat offenders get off scott free or with just a slap on the wrist. Please encourage your readers to get behind MADD and stop senseless deaths on our highways. Velma.

COUNTRY CHAPLAIN An Old Soldier Has Gone Home

By J. Mark Vandivort

Grady served during World War II in the Pacific Theater of War, having re-enlisted twice. I asked his son what he knew about his dad’s war experiences. “He didn’t want to talk about it,” said Roger.

Furthermore, Grady had requested that his obituary and funeral be very simple and short, including the songs “Amazing Grace” and “Rock of Ages”. He had worked in a steel mill in California for several years until he returned to central Oklahoma where he worked as a pest exterminator. At his funeral his daughter-in-law, Kathi, delivered a heartfelt tribute in which she acknowledged that Grady was a very difficult person to get to know. She said, “He gave me the impression that women were expected to take care of the home, kids, housework, etc. and pretty much dismissed me. But after years of pecking away at his hard exterior, I think he figured out that he had me pegged all wrong. We actually became very good friends and shared a lot of gossip, stories and memories together.” Grady became very upset with Kathi on one occasion. While Roger took him to Texas to visit family, Kathi went into his house and did some much needed cleaning. She wrote, “After he returned he informed Roger that I had ‘messed up his stuff’. But he got past all that, and I never did it again.” Grady liked simple things. He had expressed an interest in a rocking chair. Kathi said, “Since he was so hard to please and never would let you buy him anything, we decided to get him one for his upcoming birthday. He was just as proud of that chair as if we had given him a million dollars. He spent a lot of time out on the porch, rocking and keeping an eye on the neighborhood. I’d go over and mow his yard and sit on the porch with him so he could update me on the neighborhood activities. He’d tell me about the tattoo artist across the street, about all the excessive foot traffic at another house, about the lady down the street and how much she watered her flowers, and about the little boy next door that liked to push his toy mower around, or who had gotten a new vehicle. We secretly appointed him the mayor of the neighborhood.” Eventually, it became difficult for the “old soldier” to care for himself and administer his medication properly. “I know he didn’t want to give up his independence, his daily trips to the grocery store, the post office, but mostly his daily visits with his buddies at Brockaus garage for coffee and conversation,” said Kathi. He became willing to enter the Veterans’ Center, and soon adjusted to living there the remaining eight months of his life. Roger and Kathi talked with Grady about his relationship with Jesus Christ and his preparation for death. Kathi wrote, “I would try to go up on Thursday’s to eat supper with him and he would catch me up on all the gossip and events going on at the Vet Center. He made sure I had a current calendar of the events, and a meal menu for the month. Towards the end, his eyes and kidneys started failing him due to his diabetes. I will miss my father-in-law, but most of all my friend. He is in a better place now serving our Lord and Savior. Amen.” An old soldier has gone home. An old soldier has gone home to meet God, the One who has loved Grady all his life. An old soldier has gone home to meet a just and holy God who will honor the choices and decisions that Grady made during his sojourn here on earth. An old soldier has gone home and we honor his commitment to stand in our stead, during World War II, in the struggle for freedom for all mankind. Thank you, Grady. An old soldier has gone home and we pay tribute to his life and his life’s work. An old soldier has gone home and we love him and miss him. An old soldier has gone home. We will sustain and cherish the good memories forever. (In tribute to: Grady Smith Franklin, 7/26/23-12/30/07).
