2 Delivery timing

Documentation deliveries are tied to system and product milestones. In thefollowing sections, all official and otherwise widely established GSM/EDGE BSS system and network element documentation deliveries are puton a time scale in relationship with release timing. GSM/EDGE BSSDocumentation Roadmap in NOLS Documentation Center /Documentation News also provides schedules for the updated BSS andBSC/TCSM documentation NEDs.

2.1 Documentation deliveries in pre-release phase

In GSM/EDGE BSS documentation, the term pre-release document isused to refer to any document sets that are published prior to the customerpiloting phase.

Pre-release documentation is normally issued in draft state because theinformation it contains does not always reflect the final implementation ofthe software or hardware, nor has the software and hardware been testedby the time of publication.

Note that the information in draft documents describes the product in itscurrent state of development and is subject to change without notice.Nokia Siemens Networks is not responsible in any event for errors oromissions in the documents.

Pre-release sets are usually not complete documentation sets butselections of documents. Typical document sets that are available in thepre-release phase are network element pre-release documentation sets, such as BSC/TCSM Pre-release documentation, and draft system-leveldocumentation collections.

Delivery timing

Page 18: Nokia 2G Documents

2.2 Documentation deliveries in release phase

Documentation that is delivered in the release phase is no longer in draftstate, but reflects the final understanding of how the product or systemfunctions and how features are implemented.

The definition of the release phase varies a little. For some products, documentation delivered for the pilot is considered final releasedocumentation. Others refer to the software availability milestone.

For the GSM/EDGE BSS documentation, the pre-release documentationis in draft state. System-level pre-release documentation is delivered at thetime of the E3 milestone and pre-release documentation for the productdocumentation is delivered three months prior to the E4 milestone.

Table GSM/EDGE BSS release documentation lists the document setsthat are typically available in the release phase.

2.3 Documentation update deliveries

User needs are the main factor in determining the scope and timing ofdocumentation update deliveries. Update deliveries are continued until theproduct release maintenance ends.

GSM/EDGE BSS system documentation and BSC product documentationupdate deliveries are published typically every two months to synchronisedocumentation updates with software enhancement deliveries. Thecurrent practice has been to first provide Documentation Change Notes(CNs) to inform of corrections or updates made to documents after theprevious publication.

18 (47) # Nokia Siemens Networks DN05135097Issue 2-0 en13/03/2008

Guide to Nokia GSM/EDGE BSS Documentation

Page 19: Nokia 2G Documents

In some cases, a PDF version of a corrected, updated, or new document(s) is delivered with a Change Note. This type of combination is known asDocumentation Change Delivery (CD).

At regular intervals, all the corrected, updated, or new documents aregathered into an updated product documentation NED, which is publishedin NOLS. The updated product documentation NEDs are cumulative andthey contain all the corrections notified earlier via Documentation ChangeNotes and Change Deliveries.

Documentation Change Notes, Technical Notes, and updated ProductDocumentation NEDs are published in NOLS Documentation Center in thesame location as the original NED. When a new version of the NED ispublished, it replaces the old one in NOLS. The Documentation ChangeNotes are removed a couple of months after the NED Update Packagethat delivers the corrections notified in the Documentation Change Noteshas been published.

The Documentation Change Notes and Change Deliveries are referred toas Change Documentation in NOLS categorisation of documentationtypes.

BSC site documentation, TCSM site documentation, BTS andtransmission product documentation update deliveries are published, orwhole document sets updated, as considered necessary.

6 Documentation identification andversioning system

For identifying Nokia Siemens Networks documentation, the documentsare numbered and given a version and a language code. Documents thatare published with the draft status also have a draft label.

Identification numbers and codes

Identification numbers and codes are used for identifying documents, partsof a document, or entire document sets (such as a NED library or a changedelivery). The identification numbers and codes are unique, that is, onenumber or code is available for one document only.

Version

Version and issue numbering enables you to differentiate between theprevious and current versions of documents. The basic rule is that thehigher the number, the more recent the copy is.

Language

Almost all Nokia Siemens Networks documentation is in English. For somedocuments or document sets, version in other languages are available. Insuch a case, the identifier, issue, and edition are the same for alllanguages, and the differentiation between the languages is made with thelanguage code. Language codes follow the ISO639 standard for names oflanguages. For example, the language code en refers to English, ru toRussian, and zh to Chinese.

Status

The status part of documentation identification is only generated if thedocument is published at a time when its content is likely to change and, therefore, Nokia Siemens Networks cannot be held liable for the content. In this case, you can find the word 'draft' at the end of the identificationdata.

6.1 PDF document identification

The PDF document identification data can be found in the PDF footer asshown in figure PDF document identification. The document numberconsists of two parts, namely the prefix DN, which stands for documentnumber, and a running number which is unique for each document. Infigure PDF document identification, for example, the document number isDN0163595.

Each document is given an issue number, which consists of two digits. Infigure PDF document identification the issue number is 6-2. The issuenumber is incremented every time the content is changed. The first digit ofthe issue number increases once per release and the second partincreases every time the document is updated and published with arelease.

The language code is placed after the issue number. In the exampledocument, the language is English (en) If the document is published as adraft, the word 'draft' is added.

Tip

In the BSS13 and S13 release, we introduce approval dates as a furthermeans for document identification. The date appears in the PDF footer.Note that not all documents have a date on them in the BSS13 and S13release as the dates are only added to documents that have beenupdated in this release.

6.2 NED online content identification

Each online (XHTML) page of NED libraries has its own identification data. You can find it by clicking the information icon, . , in the upper right-handcorner of the main frame of each page. This is illustrated in the figure NEDonline content identification.

Figure 7. NED online content identification

Document numbers are used for identifying XHTML content as well.Version numbers are used for versioning, and language codes are usedfor identifying different languages.

Page 40: Nokia 2G Documents

Tip

Document numbers of online pages do not correspond with PDFdocument numbers because of the different level of granularity betweenthe two formats. An online page roughly corresponds with a chapter in aPDF document.

6.3 Document set identification

Entire document sets do not have document numbers but they areidentified with sales item codes instead. For example, the sales code forNokia GSM/EDGE BSS, Rel. BSS13, BSC and TCSM, Rel. S13, ProductDocumentation is BSC3153.

The sales item code of a document set is visible:

. On the cover page of each PDF document that belongs to thedocument set (see figure Sales item code on PDF cover page).

. On the cdconts.html page which is the starting page for downloadedPDF files.

Page 41: Nokia 2G Documents

The publication date shows when the document set was published. Thepublication date is visible in NOLS Documentation Center in the Modifieddate field.

Each document set is given a version number which appears as part of thedocument set title. Every time a document set is updated and republished, the version number increases. Version 1 is always the so called baserelease. Updated documentation NEDs are considered equal to regularNEDs. If a document set is updated via an updated documentation NED,the version number increases by one. In the GSM/EDGE BSSdocumentation, this type of versioning has been used from releasesBSS12 and BSC/TCSM S12 onwards. Table Document set versioningillustrates how the version number of a document set is incremented.

Table 7. Document set versioning

The versioning of the updated document sets is also illustrated in figureNED update package for GSM/EDGE BSS12 System Documentation.Note that document set versioning does not apply to the S11 and GSM/EDGE BSS11 releases and the earlier BSC/TCSM S11.5 and GSM/EDGEBSS11.5. In these cases, the updated documentation NEDs are identifiedwith running numbers to differentiate between the updated documentation, for example GSM/EDGE BSS11.5 System Documentation Update 2.

Figure 9. NED update package for GSM/EDGE BSS12 SystemDocumentation

The NED contents are updated either by publishing change notes, changedeliveries with documents in PDF format, or by publishing updateddocumentation NEDs. The identification of documentation changedeliveries in the PDF format varies, and is different from the identificationof the updated documentation NEDs described above. Each NokiaSiemens Networks business unit has its own system for identifying changedeliveries. For example, Nokia BSC/TCSM change note and changedeliveries are labelled according to the release, its version, and are given arunning number. An example of a BSC documentation change noteidentifier is: S12, v.6, Doc change note 2.

The change delivery identifier is part of the document set title which isvisible in NOLS Documentation Center in the Title field. This is illustrated infigure Change delivery identifiers in NOLS.
