NON-VIOLENT PROTEST SKITS

Introduction:Non-violent protests have been used around the world to achieve political change.

The two most notable examples of non-violent movements are the Indian Independence Movement led by Mohandas Gandhi and the American Civil Rights Movement led by Martin Luther King, Jr. Our goal in researching, creating, and performing these skits is to understand one method people have used to achieve change in their nations.

Task: 1. Research a non-violent movement. Week of Jan. 26 th

2. Write a script for a skit about this movement Week of Feb. 2 nd One or two people in group Outside of class

3. Plan a full skit with props, costumes, dialogue and/or narration Friday Feb. 6 th & Everyone in group has task Wed. Feb. 11 th During class

4. Perform the skit for the class Friday Feb. 13 th During class

Grading:We will be developing a rubric together in class for the grading of this project. In other words, you will decide what makes a good skit.

Process:

1. Choose movement

2. Research movement: Use internet tools to research the movement Take notes based on the framework we have developed in class

o What do they want?o Why do they deserve it?o How are they going to achieve it?

3. Write a script for your skit: Plan for your skit to last for 3-5 minutes and include more than one scene. Every member of the group should play an active role. Make sure to state and repeat the setting information: who, what, when, where. Write out the dialogue completely.

4. Props, costumes, etc. Use your script to plan and create props and costumes. You may bring these in ahead of time and store them in the classroom.

5. Practice your skit. Make sure you setting is clear. Make sure you clearly present the 3 essential questions:

o What do they want?o Why do they deserve it?o How are they going to achieve it?

When is a good time to use non-violent protests to achieve change?

What situations may not be suitable for a non-violent movement?
