A Peterhead Councillor is calling to have 2 of the 4 all
weather sports pitches relocated from Peterhead Prison into
the community of Peterhead.
Cllr. Alan S. Buchan said, from the first day plans were
revealed for the new Peterhead Prison it did seem that 4 all
weather sports pitches were excessive for 550 prisoners
when more than 20,000 local people had do make do with
one dilapidated all weather sports pitch. Now that half the
prisoners at Peterhead Prison have been sent back from
whence they came, namely the Central Belt of Scotland, the
prison should easily be able to manage with 2 all weather.
Cllr. Buchan continued, these pitches have been paid for by
the taxpayer. The Scottish Government’s own Index on
Multiple Deprivation shows that Peterhead has 6 of the
most 10 deprived areas in Aberdeenshire and the Accounts
Commission have just shown that Peterhead Academy is
one of the worst performing schools in Scotland. Mean-
while, primary schools, such as Buchanhaven, are failing to
meet even the minimum of 2 hours PE a week. These and
many other reasons are why 2 prison all weather pitches
should be given to the Peterhead community.

Road deaths and serious injuries involving at-work drivers and
riders remain one of our most serious road safety issues, accord-
ing to a strategic review published today.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)
commissioned TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) and the
Centre for Transport Studies at University College London
(UCL) to produce a Strategic Review of the Management of
Occupational Road Risk. It assesses the progress made in help-
ing employers to manage the risks their staff face, and create,
when they use the road for work purposes.
Since 2006, 4,726 people have been killed and more than 40,000
seriously injured in collisions involving an at-work driver or
rider (not including commuting). Since then, almost 30 per cent
of road deaths and just over 22 per cent of serious casualties
occurred in accidents involving at least one at-work driver or rider.
Often, it is not the at-work driver or rider who is killed or injured, but another road user. In 2012, 87 at-work drivers were killed and
16,720 injured in these collisions, but 422 other road users were also killed, and 25,484 injured.
The review, which was carried out as part of the RoSPA/BNFL scholarship scheme, makes a number of key recommendations.
These include:
Doing more to ensure work-related road safety is given the same widespread attention as general health and safety
Improving data on work-related driving risk, including better recording by the police, and by the Health and Safety Executive
Properly evaluating the effectiveness of different approaches to the management of occupational road risk (MORR)
Conducting more work into the effectiveness of in-car data recorders and monitoring technologies
Reviving the Occupational Road Safety Alliance in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders, and supported by the Depart-
ment for Transport (DfT).
Kevin Clinton, RoSPA’s head of road safety, said: “Injuries and deaths sustained from work-related driving remain a priority action
point for both road and occupational safety. As the latest figures show, up to a third of road accidents involve someone who is using
the road for work purposes.
“This review further emphasises the need for the awareness of MORR to be raised and given the priority it deserves. RoSPA will
lead a MORR stakeholder forum in the autumn to help develop an action plan. We will also be developing guidance for employers
to help them evaluate the measures they have to manage their occupational road risks.”

Aberdeen Student is the New Vice President at Scotland’s Rural College
Alex Robb, from Aberdeen, who has just completed his honours degree in Sustainable Environmental Management at
the Craibstone campus of Scotland’s Rural College, has been elected as the new Vice President of the SRUC Students
Association. He joins newly elected President Briony Dall from Glenrothes in the new Presidential team. Like Briony,
who has just completed her HNC in Animal Care at the SRUC Elmwood campus in Fife, Alex will hold the sabbatical,
salaried post for a year.
The pair take up the reins from Cameron Law and Marcus Murray who were the first ever joint presidential “team” at
SRUC, representing students across all six college campuses where SRUC has 2,500 full time and 6000 part time
students following courses from entry level through national certificate to degree and PhD.
For new Vice President Alex Robb (21) his election is a chance to give something back:
“For the last three years I was class rep on the Students Association and it taught me a lot. My new job will help me
develop new skills, but it is also a chance for me to make a contribution to the work of SRUCSA.”
Briony (20), who has already served as her class representative at SRUC Elmwood, says the distances involved in
linking the different sites will be a challenge, until she passes her driving test!
“I regard the job as a fantastic opportunity”, she says. “Communication is vitally important. With so much change going
on the whole student body needs to be kept in touch. That covers students following entry level courses through to PhD.
It is not easy but we have some ideas for engaging them more.”
In addition to student activities and interaction with the National Union of Students the Student President serves on the
full SRUC Board, the Vice President on the Research Board representing research students and both members of the
team serve on the Education Board and various other sub committees.
Briony and Alex will be working closely with Cameron and Marcus over the next few weeks during the handover
period. It will ensure continuity in SRUCSA activities.
“Marcus and I would like to take this opportunity to wish Briony and Alex the best of luck as their time as Sabbatical
Officers” says Cameron. “We have complete faith that they will continue to build on the successes of SRUCSA in the
coming year.”

Vulnerable road user deaths rise in Scotland for second year Deaths and injuries on Scotland’s roads fell in 2013, continuing the country’s long term improvements in road safety.
However, more needs to be done to protect vulnerable road users in Scotland after the latest casualty figures reveal an
increase in rider and cyclist deaths for the second year running, warns RoSPA.
The provisional figures, published today by Transport Scotland, show that nine children were also tragically killed on
the country’s roads in 2013 - seven more than in 2012. Of these youngsters, five were pedestrians, two were cyclists, and
two were in a car.
Meanwhile, 23 motorcyclists died in Scotland last year (21 killed in 2012), although the number of riders injured fell by
11 per cent to 770, with 279 left seriously injured.
Among pedal cyclists, there were 13 deaths in 2013, up by four on the previous year, while those injured fell by three
per cent to 882, of which 148 suffered serious injuries.
There was also an increase in the number of car user fatalities - up 15 to 89. A total of 6,960 were injured - down nine
per cent from 2012 - and 720 seriously.
Overall, there were 172 road deaths in Scotland in 2013 - six (three per cent) fewer than in 2012. A total of 1,667 people
were seriously injured - 315 (16 per cent) fewer than in 2012. And, 9,654 people were slightly injured - 908 (nine per
cent) less than in 2012.
There was also a welcome reduction in the number of bus and coach user casualties (394 in 2013 compared to 44 in
2012). Of these, two were killed. Pedestrian casualties also fell 12 per cent from 1, 986 in 3012 to 1,744 last year.
Kevin Clinton, RoSPA’s head of road safety at The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: “Although it is
encouraging to see that the number of people killed or injured on Scotland’s roads has fallen in 2013, we must not lose
sight of the fact that more needs to be done to protect vulnerable road users from injury and even death.
“With more cyclists, motorcyclists and children killed in Scotland last year than in 2012, it shows that there needs to be
a real focus on making our roads safer for them to use.
“At RoSPA, a big part of our mission is to stop children being accidentally killed or injured, and we also support
initiatives that seek to improve the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. Any work in this area can help prevent injuries and
has other health advantages too.
“Scotland’s target is to reduce the number of people killed in road accidents by 2020, based on a 2004-08 baseline
average, but clearly more work needs to be done in order to meet the target for vulnerable road users, such as children,
cyclists and motorcyclists.”
