meal we finish up food prep, set the tables, serve the food, and clean up.

If you are interested in helping—for a whole day, or for an hour—please call Jim Michie at 883-3612 or stop in the day of the meal. We generally begin working at 10:00 a.m.

We take a break for lunch, so you are invited to bring a bag lunch or a dish to share.

St Paul’s received the following letter from the

Northern Great Lakes Synod:

July 29, 2019

Dear Partners in Ministry,

Thank you so much for you generosity! For the past two years, the theme and focus for our Synod has been

“Equipping the Saints for Ministry.” Your Mission Support and special gifts to and through our Synod make

this possible. Thank you for your designated gifts in 2019:

Your mission support gifts make an impact nationally and globally, as our synod sends 47% to support the

broader and deeper ministries of the ELCA

Our impact in the world, as we seek to make a difference in Jesus’ name,

is greater together.

Thank you for your very practical and important support of what God is doing

in and through us all. I am grateful for your partnership!

Yours in Christ,

Bishop Katherine Finegan

~ From the Assistant to the Bishop~

What of the Bible? Shall it be read?

“All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for

teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for

training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16

“Comfort yourself with the Word of

God, the pre-eminent consolation.”

(Tappert, Luther: Letters of Spiritual

Counsel, p. 63)

Professor Dick Jensen, a former

speaker on Lutheran Vespers,

once quipped in a seminary class, “Read the

Bible. It sheds excellent light on the

commentaries.”

Horace Greeley said: “It is impossible to

enslave mentally or socially a Bible-reading

people. The principles of the Bible are the

ground-work of human freedom.”

A recent Pew Research found that 35% of

Americans say they read the Bible at least once

a week. I wonder what the statistic would be in

the Northern Great Lakes Synod? About 42% of

Christians say that reading the Bible or other

religious materials is an essential part of what

being Christian means to them personally.

How does the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran

Church in America—our national denominational

affiliation) view the Bible? According to our

constitution (based on the ELCA model

constitution) section C2.02:

“The canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments

are the written Word of God. Inspired by God’s Spirit

speaking through their authors, they record and announce

God’s revelation centering in Jesus Christ. Through them

God’s Spirit speaks to us to create and sustain Christian

faith and fellowship for service in the world.”

If we believe what our constitution says—that the

Old and New Testaments are the written Word of

God—we would do

well to read that Bible

and reflect upon the

ways we can approach

that reading and

interpretation task.

I encourage you to read the Bible for yourselves.

I encourage you to read biblical commentaries.

I encourage you to join a Bible study group.

I encourage you to humbly pray for discernment

as the Christian community will continue to use

biblical materials to make sense of life.

If the Bible is to

have any

relevance for

the Christian

community, then

Christians need

to familiarize

themselves with the “first language” of the faith.

Six of our synod’s congregations have

committed to the Faithful Innovations process for

personal and community spiritual growth. A

major part of this process is reading and

prayerfully reflecting on the Bible as individuals

and with each other. We call it, “Dwelling in the

Word”.

Please pray for:

Bethany, Mohawk

Trinity, Ishpeming

Faith, Ishpeming

First, Iron River

Trinity, Trout Creek

First, Ewen

Please pray for these congregations walking

through the “Faithful Innovations” process and

their reading and reflecting on God’s Word. Also,

consider your own Bible reading habits. God is

still speaking!

~ Pastor Jim Duehring

Note: The Northern Lights Lutheran Parish

offers two Bible study groups—one at Siloa that

meets Mondays at 11am at Siloa House and the

other at St. Paul’s that meets Thursday evenings at 7pm. Join us for a journey of spiritual growth!
