1. CHECK the scene, then CHECK the person.

2. Tap on the shoulder and shout, “Are you okay?‚“ and quickly look for breathing.

3. CALL 9-1-1 if no response.

4. If unresponsive and not breathing, BEGIN CHEST COMPRESSIONS.

1. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest.

2. Place the heel of the other hand on top of the first hand, lacing your fingers together.

3. Keep your arms straight, position your shoulders directly over your hands.

4. Push hard, push fast.

• Compress the chest at least 2 inches.

• Compress at least 100 times per minute.

• Let the chest rise completely before pushing down again.

5. Continue chest compressions.

Except in one of these situations:

If an AED is available:

- You see an obvious sign of life (breathing).

- Another trained responder arrives and takes over.

- EMS personnel arrive and take over.

- You are too exhausted to continue.

- An AED is ready to use.

- The scene becomes unsafe.

2. Wipe chest dry.

3. Attach the pads.

4. Plug in connector, if necessary.

5. Make sure no one is touching the individual.

6. Push the “Analyze” button, if necessary.

7. If a shock is advised, push the “Shock” button.

8. Perform compressions and follow AED prompts.

TIPS: • Whenever possible use disposable gloves

when giving care.

• Occasional gasps are not breathing.

Anatomy of a First Aid Kit Whether you buy a first aid kit or put one together, make sure it has all the items you may need:

• Include any personal items such as medications and emergency phone numbers or other items your health-care provider may suggest.

• Check the kit regularly.

• Make sure the flashlight batteries work.

• Check expiration dates and replace any used or out-of-date contents.

The Red Cross recommends that all first aid kits for a family of four include the following:

• 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)

• 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)

• 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)

• 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)

• 5 antiseptic wipe packets

• 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)

• 1 blanket (space blanket)

• 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)

• 1 instant cold compress

• 2 pair of nonlatex gloves (size: large)

• 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each)

• Scissors

• 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide)

• 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)

• 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches)

• 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)

• Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass)

• 2 triangular bandages

• Tweezers

• First aid instruction booklet
