• It is located along the Northwester Pacific coast, from Northern California to Canada and Alaska.

• It has cold winters and warm summers.• It is moist there because it is by the

coast.

Page 14: Northwestern Coniferous Forest

• Red cedar tress provide food for mice. The mice eat the fruit and the mice spread the seeds found in the fruit to other places.

• Mutualism

• Red cedar trees provide shelter for American Robins. The tree is not harmed.

• Commensalism

• A wolf drinks some water and the bacteria giardia gets into it’s intestines. The bacteria gets nutrients from the wolf and makes the wolf sick.

• Parasitism

Page 15: Northwestern Coniferous Forest

An earthquake hit Northwestern Coniferous Forest and all that is left is trees that are knocked over, there are a couple of them still standing and dead animals. This earthquake really made a big difference on this forest and there is so much to be done for example cleaning up the area which is done by decomposers and new trees will grow. This will bring back the forest.

For example if a part of California were to break off of the mainland then there would be some rock uncovered and primary succession would occur. In Primary succession lichen will start to form on rocks and break them down into soil. After that some grasses and ferns start to inhabit the area. Then shrubs and trees begin to also live there. After a long while there will be a forest located where the bare rock had been

In another part of the forest the earthquake has destroyed all of the trees and plants. There is still soil left so secondary succession takes place. The plants begin to grow back and some years later the forest is similar to what it used to look like.
