Community Theatre
Tideswell Murder Mysteries Murder is afoot in Tideswell when Tideswell Community Players perform TheReal Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard as part of its double bill (26th-29th November). This is a side splitting comedy 'who-dunnit' with a difference. Two theatrecritics (sitting with the audience) become increasingly involved with the action of a murder mystery thriller with deadly, h ilarious and genuinely confus-ing, consequences ! Nothing is what it seems. Who is dead and who is the real Inspector Hound ? Tideswell Youth Theatre perform Mystery at Muldoon Manor in the other half of the evening. The cast of a radio drama gather in the studio for a performance of a country-house thriller, but soon relationships and tensions come to the forefront with comic results. The plays will be performed at The Theatre at the URC Hall, Parke Road, Tideswell 7.30pm on Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th November. Tickets from Chapmans Newsagents, Tideswell or Tideswell Stores at £5 (or £4 concessions). Tickets on the door £5.50 (£4.50 concessions). Reservations and more information on 01298 871063. You've been Tangoed ! The URC Hall was thrilled with the rhythms of Buenos Aries when Tango Siempre played to a full house on 7th November. The concert, arranged by Tideswell Com-munity Theatre to coincide with the Firebird Trust's project to make more music happen in the village, featured Argentine tango from the 1920s to the present day. Tango Siempre has played in foyer concerts at the National Theatre and at the Royal Festival Hall, as well as on the radio. The quartet of piano, double bass, violin, and accordian was led by Pete Rosser (our musician in residence). Pete, who also played the bandonean for two numbers in the concert, was in Tides-well for a week of music and voice workshops including open sessions at the week-end for anyone who wanted to make what music they could with musical instru-ments or their voices. The music was passionate and excellently played: the concert was a resounding success with the audience, sated with sangria and olives, clapping and foot stomping until an encore was performed. Don't miss these live performances in Tideswell - whether they are concerts, ama-teur or professional plays. You are sure to have a great evening out ! After the play in November, in early 2004 we have New Perspectives with When Icicles Hang by the Wall Talia Theatre with Vaudevilles, and TCPs own play. Flower Festival Thanks
Many of you will have heard, or read in the Church Magazine, of the tremendous financial
result that September's Flower Festival produced. £28,698 is simply a staggering amount
and reflects the colossal amount of hard work by many people. Our thanks to all who
worked to achieve such a result, particularly the members of the Flower Festival Committee.
Mrs. Jennifer Bower chaired that committee and inspired many others to follow her excel-
lent example in the devoted way in which she worked on this project. Many people both
from the Tideswell community and far beyond played their part with support in many
different ways. A heartfelt thanks to them and a thank-you to the whole community for
supporting the Church in this way. The money raised will go directly to helping our Restora-
tion Fund which enables us to keep such a beautiful building open and available to all. It is
good to think that the crowds which the event attracted brought financial benefit to more
than just the Church.

Council Concerns Oct. ‘03 Power at last, wh ich for you means a less interesting read than usual. Our esteemed Chair and leader, Clr Tracy Critchlow, could not be at the Oct. meet ing and therefore the Council Chain was passed (figuratively) to me. No cosmetic g lory then, but nobody could pull my chain and make me flush. It’s a less interesting read because my energies were concentrated on keeping the unruly councillors in order and stopping the members of the public from lynching them, rather than taking notes on which to loosely base this column. Before there is baying for my b lood I must say that every body behaved themselves. Right, let’s get this show on the road. Public open session: the council was nearly overwhelmed; there
were 5 members of the public and 7 clrs. The members of the
public spoke about the magic vanishing double yellow lines ….. &
then there was one; the Co-op planning application; access to the
Pinfold on Gordon Rd.; efforts by young people to build their own
BMX track. Lastly, but by no means least, a couple (not an item)
of people wanted to hear the discussion on the application to
change the licence from club to full pub at the Ex-Servicemen’s
Club premises. Rumour has it that it will rise phoenix like from the
ashes to be called - The Phoenix.
Licencing: The following were recommended for approval:- change
of licence from club to full public house at the Tideswell Ex-Service
Men’s club premises. Extension to the Co-op licence to cover the
whole of the ground floor.
The application to refurbish the Co-op shop and convert the sec-
ond and third floors to flats was dealt with in two parts. The
Council recommended for approval the refurbishment and ac-
knowledged that the Co-op plays an important role in the social
and economic life of the village. However the flats conversion is,
under the conditions of the Local Plan, inappropriate development
for two reasons. Firstly, the Plan requires that each flat have one
parking space plus one visitor space per 4units = 4 spaces. There
is no provision for off street parking in this application. Secondly,
the flats directly overlook the bedrooms in property opposite.
The following were recommended for approval: Bank Top Farm;
High Rigg, Alma Rd. and Sunnyville, Sherwood Rd.
The following decisions have been received from the Peak District Na-tional Park Authority: installation of three extraction flu p ipes with the conditions that within six months they be painted with a non-reflect ive substance and that the site is screened with trees. Litter: there is a problem with overflowing litterbins in the Pot Market. Derbyshire Dales will not empty them more frequently so we are consid-ering buying a bigger bin. Christmas Lights Comp: there will be a £30, a £20 and a £10 prize for the best decorated houses in the Village. Tracy Critchlow will be casting her crit ical judging eye around on the w/e of 20th/21st Dec. There will be certificates for five commended houses. The money will help to pay for your increased electricity b ills. Cemetery : The tarmacking of the paths was due to start in the second week o f Nov. and, as you read this, will probably be fin ished now. Some grave/head stones are leaning dangerously. The Council has a duty of care to ensure that the cemetery is a safe place. We have tried to contact relatives to arrange reinstating or laying flat. All unsafe headstones will be laid flat if the relatives’ can’t be contacted. Thanks to Clr Swarbrick for his diligent work. East Midlands in Bloom Comp: We came third in the Large Village Category and were high ly commended for the plantation on Wheston Bank. Congratulations and thanks to everybody who contributed. The Flower Festival: It was magnificent, the church certainly looked very jungley! Thank you to every body who did the Church and Tides-well proud. The Library The Library hours have changed. The opening times are 2-7 Mon., Fri. 2-7 and 9.30 – 1 pm on Sat. Vid-eos and DVDs can be hired and there will be Internet access,
Dig ital Tideswell. If you’re interested in getting broadband into Tideswell p lease contact Pete Roberts, [email protected] Clr. Dav id Griffith for Tideswell Parish Council. Meet ings on the 2nd Mon. of the month at 7pm in Sports Pavilion. The first part of the meet-ing is for you to have your say.
