This new and handsome bulletin formatis a fortuitous metaphor for the many changesthat Tikvat Israel Congregation will beexperiencing this year. Rori Pollak will bejoining us in June as new director of theBroadman-Kaplan Early Childhood Center.Susan Newman has decided to step downfrom her many years of devoted andoutstanding service as our executive director, and the search is on for a strong candidatewho will attempt to fill her shoes. Theenvironmental committee, which was startedby Rabbi Gorin and is chaired by congregantDan Black, has begun the task of increasingthe efficiency of our physical plant’s use ofenergy. The changes Dan and his committeeare instituting run the gamut from thetransparent (changing electricity suppliers)to the subtle (changing the type of light bulbsthat we use) for now. Perhaps in the future, more obvious changes are in store.

And then there is me. After two yearsco-chairing the adult education committee(AEC) with Susan Apter, I am honored toserve as president of the congregation for thenext two years. I infer that my candidacywas acceptable to the congregation at least inpart because of the successful AEC curriculumour committee has created. (I refuseto entertain the “warm body” hypothesis.)That curriculum is the product of ourcommittee’s hard work and creativity. Nowyou can’t have creativity without risk, and ifyou take some risks, you willfail occasionally. But if the risks we take in thenext two years are well calculated, I predict

From the President’s Perspective

that we will succeed more than we willfail. We will witness the vibrant growth ofour community that some don’t expect, butthat we all want. This has been my philosophyand approach towards my own career as ascientist, co-chair of the AEC, and now aspresident of the congregation.

It is often said that people don’t fearchange; they fear the loss implicit in change. As the synagogue leadership — comprised ofthe executive committee, the board ofdirectors, and me — consider the choices wemake as we lead, I promise we will be sensitiveto those concerns. In fact, I am certain thatwe will only enhance all that we have thatmakes our community unique and special. These very qualities — our warmth, networkof support, ideals and spirituality, to name afew — are the ones that make ourcommunity so special to all of us, and makeyour acceptance of me as the president of thecongregation such an honor.

So let’s all look forward to an interestingcouple of years, and begin them with aconcerted effort to thank all those who haveworked hard and continue to volunteer tocontribute to this very special community. Please first take a moment to thank Phil Katz([email protected]) for his past service on thesynagogue bulletin, and Andi Kronzek([email protected]) for her current service asour bulletin editor. Then, please turn topage 3 to read about Art Fabel, a quietlyenthusiastic volunteer who represents all thatis the best about the community of TikvatIsrael Congregation.

Religious School Report: Establishing Roots and Wings Among Our Students

by Tamar Weinsweig, director of Rimonim Center for Learning

“Give. them.roots.and.they.will.grow.wings.and.take.your.message.along.with.them.on.their.journey.”

I.do.not.know.who.wrote.this,.but.I.find.this.quotation.to.be.compelling.for.both.parents.and.educators..As.we.near.the.end.of.the.school.year,.we.as.educators.reflect.on.what.we.have.brought.into.the.lives.of.our.children.and.how.we.can.make.it.better.for.following.years..We.reflect.on.the.different.thought-.provoking.questions.we.had.asked.and.of.the.moving.moments.that.stirred.their.souls.

We.try.our.hardest.to.make.our.sessions.here.at.Rimonim.be.meaningful.and.exciting,.bringing.our.community.together.through.programs.and.creating.new.experiences.that.all.will.remember.and.learn.from.for.many.years.to.come.--.so.students.can.take.that.message.along.with.them.on.their.journey.

March.began.with.a.big.trip.for.our.5th-8th graders.to.Philadelphia.where.they.interacted.with. Jewish. American. history. at. the. new.National.Museum.of.American.Jewish.History..Although.students.will.never.admit.to.enjoying.a.museum,.their.evaluations.of.the.trip.suggest.that. some. parts. were. highly. enjoyable. and,.more. importantly,. they. have. learned. much.along.the.way.

Our.K-2nd graders.have.created.a.Beit Café.(coffee. house). where. they. were. able. to. order.coffee,.tea,.cakes,.cookies.and.more.in.Hebrew.for. their.parents..Families. came. together. that.morning. to. share. a. light. breakfast. and. to. be.proud. of. their. children. who. have. grown. so.much..

Students.in.4th-7th grades.put.on.a.Purim.play.with.an.interpretation.of.modern.young.people..They.made.the.story.of.Purim.relevant.to.their.lives.and.grew.to.understand.the.meaning.behind.the.words.of.the.Megillah..

They.also.created.a.wax.museum.where.they.were.the.statues..They.researched.Jewish.characters.of.all.times.and.places.and.became.them.for.a.morning..They.made.a.Jewish.connection.to.those.characters.and.knew.their.stories.and.how.they.affected.a.particular.facet.of.Judaism..We.held.our.museum.in.the.library.annex.and.invited.elderly.residents.of.multiple.homes.to.come.and.enjoy.our.children.

Our.high school students.have.been.engaged.in.different.Jewish.themes.such.as.Jewish.ethics.and.business,.sexual.content.of.today’s.world.and.the.Jewish.view.of.it.and.more..We.hope.our.young.adults.with.slightly.larger.wings.will.look.back.on.those.messages.and.make.life.decisions.through.Jewish.eyes..

With. Pesach. fast. approaching,. we. recognize. that. more. than. in. any. other. era. our.children.have.more.freedom.to.choose.where.to.go.and.what.to.do.with.their.free.time..We.at.Rimonim.are.appreciative.and.thankful.for.our.students.who.come.on.Sunday.mornings.and.Wednesday.afternoons..Our.children.who.put.in.much.effort.and.love.into.becoming.better.Jews.and.better.citizens.of.the.world.and.growing.their.wings.to.their.full.potential.so.they.can.make.us.proud.

I.would.like.to.thank.our.teachers.who.work.tirelessly.to.make.this.a.special.place.for.our.kids.and.the.entire.TI.staff,.lay.leaders.and.clergy.who.are.a.major.part.of.the.nourishment.we.provide.for.the.roots.of.our.children..I.would.also.like.to.thank.the.Jewish.Federation.of.Greater.Washington.for.providing.us.with.grants.that.help.us.accomplish.our.goals.

Have.a.happy,.healthy.summer.

Rimonim Center to Continue, Though Shaare Tefila Opts Out

by Jonathan Solomon, TI 1st vice president

It.was.just.about.two.years.ago.that.Tikvat.Israel.invited.Shaare.Tefila.to.join.us.in.a.collaborative.religious.school..Shaare.Tefila.had. been. without. a. building. for. several.years.and.was.renting.space.in.local.public.school. buildings.. It. just. seemed. like. the.right.thing.to.do...

Shaare.Tefila.brought.25.students. to.the. relationship,. which. benefited. both.synagogues. through. cost. savings,. while.providing.Shaare.Tefila.with.a.Jewish.place.to.meet.and.other.benefits..The.Rimonim.Center.for.Learning.Committee,.enrolling.school-age.members.from.both.synagogues,.has.worked.cooperatively..

Our. two. groups. have. been. meeting.for. the. last. several. months. to. discuss.continuation.of.our.collaborative.religious.school.program..One.issue.was.how.to.run.a.school.under.a.two-building.model,.which.now. arises. with. the. opening. of. Shaare.Tefila’s.new.building.later.this.year.

Because. the. Tikvat. Israel. Board.of. Directors. is. dedicated. to. providing.educational. programming. valued. by.congregant. families,. we. held. meetings.in.early.March.to. learn.what.our.parents.were. thinking.. We. found. them. willing.to. continue. the. collaboration,. but. then.Shaare.Tefila.announced. it.wanted.to. try.a. different. approach..Their. synagogue.now.has.decided.to.create.a.program.with.classroom. instruction. only. on. Sundays..They.intend.to.use.a.computer..program.to.teach.Hebrew.over.the.Internet.and.to.require.Shabbat.service.attendance.

What.motivates.this.change.for.Shaare.Tefila.is.the.belief.“this.new.vision.will.be.more.attractive.to.our.current.members.”.Shaare.Tefila.asked.Tikvat.Israel.to.join.in.this.new.venture.

..The.Tikvat.Israel.board,.at.its.March.28.meeting,.carefully.reviewed.the.religious.school. programming,. financing. and.logistics,.all.with.an.eye.of.doing.what.is.best.for.Tikvat.Israel’s.children..The.vote.was.unanimous;.Shaare.Tefila’s.approach.would.

Sisterhood: Time for Leaders to Emerge

by Bobbi Gorban, TI Sisterhood president

This. year. has. flown.by. . It . ha s . been.filled. with. a. variety.of. programs. and.events. that. have.been.supported.well.by.the.women.of.TI...We. still. have. a. few.

more. programs. for. the. remainder. of. the.calendar.year..We.hope.you.will.continue.to.support.them.with.the.same.high.level.of.enthusiasm.

I.want.to.say.that.the.turnout.for.the.Shawl.to.Tallit.program.was.wonderful..We.had.25.people,.mothers.and.daughters.as.well.as.women.who.had.never.worn.a.tallit.or.who.wanted.to.add.another.one.to.their.shul.wardrobe..All.were.there.to.learn.how.to.tie.the.tzit-tzit..We.created.some.lovely.tallitot..The.women.have.been.very.pleased.with.the.results.and.feel.special.when.they.wear.them.to.services.

not.benefit.Tikvat.Israel’s.children..We.now.will.return.to.the.former.configuration.of.our. religious. school. while. retaining. the.Rimonim. name. chosen. by. Education.Director.Tamar.Weinsweig...

So.where.does.this.decision.leave.us?..TI.parents.have.told.us.they.value.the.current.program. and. the. learning. activities. that.come.with.our.2-day.per.week. schedule..They.are.thrilled.with.Tamar,.our.director..Tamar.is.happy.at.Tikvat.Israel.and.wants.to.continue.here..She.loves.the.feeling.of.our.congregation.and.has.a.strong.attachment.to.our.children..The.innovative.programs.that.our.school.enjoys.are.her.work.and.will.continue.after.the.collaboration.with.Shaare.Tefila.comes.to.an.end.

Projecting.our.numbers.conservatively,.and.without.considering.new.enrollments.this.summer,.we.anticipate.having.a.class.for.each.grade.level..One.possible.exception.is.this.fall’s.6th.grade,.which.may.need.to.be.combined.with.another.class..We.will.know.more.as.next.year’s.registrations.come.in,.and.we.will.notify.our.6th.grade.parents.if.such.a.situation.arises...

The. end. of. the. collaboration. with.Shaare.Tefila. also. means. that. all. classes.will. continue. to.be.held. at.Tikvat. Israel..Some.parents.have.asked.how.the.changing.

Few. Tikvat. Israel.volunteers.have.made.more. of. an. impact.while. garnering. less.public. recognition.than. David. Gantz...And. that’s. the. way.David. always. has.preferred.it...

H i s . m o d u s operandi.has.been.to.perform.g’milut hasadim.(deeds. of. lovingkindness). mainly. behind.the.scenes..Until.recently,.he.co-chaired.the.congregation’s.Bereavement. and.Tzedakah.Committees,. served. as. a. gabbai gadol. for.Shabbat. and. holiday. services. and. was. a.minyan.captain..But.he.reluctantly.resigned.from.many.of.his.activities.in.order.to.care.for.his.disabled.father.

Dave. was. a. founding. member. of.the. Bereavement. Committee. (Chevra Kadisha),. which. is. now. more. than. 10.years. old..This. committee. oversees. a.half.dozen. functions. following. a.death. in. the.synagogue. community,. including. tahara.(ritual. washing),. assistance. with. funeral.arrangements.(when.requested),.preparation.of. the. mourners’. home,. arranging. shiva minyanim. and. providing. the. meal. of.condolence.....

“As. chair. of. the. committee,. I. am.the.one.who. receives. kudos,. but. it. is. the.individuals.within. the. group.whom. I. am.honored.to.know,”.Dave.commented.in.an.interview.several.years.ago..“While.serving.our. community. they. insist. on. as. much.anonymity.as.possible,.and.this.humbles.me.”.

Bereavement. Committee. member.Louise.Chatlynne.adds.that.Dave.always.has.been.available.when.congregants.needed.him,.yet.“people.rarely.realized.all.the.calling.and.arranging.he.did.behind.the.scenes.to.make.things.go.smoothly.”.

Adds.Dan. Jacobs,. a.member.of.both.the.Bereavement.and.Tzedakah.Committees:.“While. none. of. our. tasks. are. very. easy.(physically.and.emotionally),.I.believe.that.David.has.the.hardest.as.he.assists.the.families.of.the.bereaved..Because.of.David’s.leading.by. example. and.his. care. and. concern. for.everyone. in. the.Chevra,.we.are. able. to.do.what.is.necessary.during.a.family’s.time.of.grief.”

A. major. accomplishment. of. the.committee. under. his. leadership,. Louise.noted,.was. the.development.of. the.Tikvat.Israel’s.“Guide.to.Jewish.Mourning.Practices,”.which. is. available. on. our. website. as. a.reference. for. everyone. in. the. community.who.has.lost.a.loved.one.

On. the.Tzedakah. Committee,. Dave.was. the.keeper.of. the. checkbook..He.was.also.intimately.involved.in.the.committee’s.semi-annual.discussions.on.how.to.allocate.the.funds.collected.at.daily.minyanim.and.at.Purim.(averaging.$5,000.to.$6,000.in.recent.years)..“We’re.always.discussing.the.issue.of.Jewish. versus.non-Jewish. and. local. versus.non-local......Hopefully.we’re.striking.a.good.balance,”.he.said..

“A.measure.of.David’s.superb.leadership.is. his. ability. to. delegate,”. notes. Rabbi.Howard.Gorin..Everyone.was. involved. in.all.the.decisions.made.by.the.committees.he.

“He.also.has.his.priorities.right.--.family.comes.first,.and.I.admire.him.for.that.choice.too,”.Rabbi.Gorin.added.

Dave’s.wife.Alice. says.her. spouse.has.felt.over.the.years.“it.is.both.a.privilege.and.a.duty.to.become.involved.in.synagogue.life..One.of.the.benefits.of.giving.of.yourself.is.the.opportunity.to.get.to.know.many.incredible.people..Dave.has. frequently.mentioned. to.me.how.lucky.we.are.to.be.friends.with.the.many.people.he.has.met.through.his.work.at.the.shul..The.climate.of.our.shul.is.one.that.has.encouraged.and.supported.him.to.take.on.new.challenges..Whenever. I.have. told.him.how.proud.I.am.of.him.and.his.work.with.the.committees.he.always.replies,.‘It’s.[the.committee.members].who.really.do.all.the.work.’”

Dave’s. parents. were. excellent. role.models. for. him..They. were. both. highly.involved.in.synagogue.life.as.well.as.coaching.and.volunteer.work,.well.into.their.80’s.

Professionally,. Dave. worked. for.nearly.30.years.as.a.commercial.assessor.in.Montgomery.County,.retiring.in.2004..“He.is. fond.of. saying. that.he. is. involved.with.the.two.certainties.of.life:.death.and.taxes,”.Alice.quipped.

He.later.became.a.property.tax.manager.for.Marriott.International.in.Bethesda..

We.wish.David’s.father.a.return.to.good.health.and.send.heartfelt.gratitude.to.David.Gantz. for. all. he. has. done. to. enrich. our.community.life.

Tales of Charlotte Recollected

Charlotte Zeidman (center) brought her commanding voice to a Purim spiel at Tikvat Israel about five years ago.

Lee.tried.using.a.Talmudic.argument.to.escape.this.servitude..“Mom,.we.can’t.do.this,.we.can’t.work.on.Shabbat..Her.first.words.were.‘Be.quiet.and.do.what.you’re.told.’.I’m.guessing.she.consulted.[the.rabbi.at.the.time].because.soon.her.argument.changed.to:.‘This.isn’t.work.--.it’s.a.mitzvah!’”.

Always Commanding AttentionSteve.Raucher.will.remember.Charlotte.as.someone.willing.to.make.

But.he’ll.also.remember.Charlotte.as.the.first.person.to.trigger.the.new,.high-tech.alarm.system.installed.in.recent.months.using.federal.funds.from.the.Department.of.Homeland.Security.

“Either.no.one.had.told.her.about.it.or.she.didn’t.think.about.it,”.Raucher.said..

From the Rabbi’s Desk: A Chance to Stand and Deliver

by Rabbi Howard D. Gorin

A.few.weeks.ago,.I.did.something.I.had.never.done.before...I.delivered.a.D’var Torah...Now.you.may.ask:.Doesn’t.our.rabbi.do.that.just.about.every.Shabbat?..True,.but.this.is.the.first.time.I.delivered.a.D’var Torah.as.part.of.a.communal.meal.--.on.Purim,.no.less.

Transformation. of. a. synagogue.community. into. a. Mekom Torah. means.more.than.making.sure.that.our.Torahs.are.

kosher.and.that.the.bima.is.accessible...It.means.Torah.is.woven.into.the.most.mundane.of.our.efforts,.that.few.if.any.activities.take.place.without.a.reminder.of.our.raison d’etre...That.means,.among.other. things,. that.meetings.begin.with.a.D’var Torah. and.meals.conclude.with.a.D’var Torah.

This.is.not.the.rabbi’s.exclusive.domain...Congregants.can.and.ought.to.be.given.ample.opportunities.to.deliver.Divre Torah, not.just.from.the.bima on.Shabbat.but.whenever.we.gather.

Almost.two.years.ago.I.wrote:“My. father,. z”l,. served.his. congregation. in. a.number. of.

capacities;.one.of.them.was.the.assignment.of.summertime.Divre Torah.. .Even.though.the.congregation.had.two.very. talented.rabbis,.they.needed.a.break.to.attend.to.other.responsibilities;.at.the.same.time,.the.congregants.benefited.from.hearing.other.voices.and.different.approaches...My.father.was.the.one.who.made.it.happen.

“Having.congregants.give.Divre Torah.as.a.regular.feature.of.congregational.life.has.always.been.one.of.my.aims.as.a.rabbi,.but.somewhere.along.the.line.I.veered.away.from.implementing.this.goal...It.has.been.a.long.time.since.I.have.given.a.workshop.to.teach.congregants.to.give.Divre Torah...I.intend.to.correct.that.lapse.”

The.time.to.implement.my.intention.has.come..I.am.offering.a.D’var Torah.workshop.on.two.consecutive.Sundays,.May.15.and.22,.from.10-11:30.a.m...No.advance.preparation.is.needed,.but.reservations.are.required.as.the.number.of.spaces.is.limited..Please.contact.me.directly.to.reserve.your.spot:[email protected].

With.all.the.print.and.digital.resources.available.in.English,.one.does.not.have.to.be.a.Hebraic.scholar.to.deliver.an.authentic.and.compelling.D’var Torah...One.needs.some.training,.mentoring.and.hands-on.experience.

We. have. a. cadre. of. committed. volunteers. who. schedule.congregants.to.read.from.the.Torah.--.on.Shabbat.and.festivals.and.on.weekday.mornings...Cantor.Helzner.is.taking.a.sabbatical.for.the.next.four.months...Instead.of.undertaking.all.the.preparations.herself,.she.expressed.her.confidence.in.the.ability.of.lay.people.to.find.people.to.lead.the.services.in.her.absence...I.want.to.emulate.her.example.and.entrust.to.congregational.volunteers.the.scheduling.of.lay.darshanim.during.my.absence.

If.this.is.your.mitzvah.--.and.I.believe.it.should.be.a.mitzvah.entrusted.to.more.than.one.individual.--.please.contact.me.
