The Voice of Talbot Country Club Easton, MD Founded in 1910 November 2011 President’s Letter Fall is upon us, the leaves are falling and the winter time waterfowl are making their appearance at TCC. The greens have healed from the fall aeration, so take advantage of the warm days and get out on the course. How- ever, in the event temperatures are not ideal for golf in the upcoming weeks, TCC still has some great activi- ties planned. To start, we will be having our Prime Rib Thursdays every Thursday in November, except on Thanksgiving when the Club is closed. On November 12 th , do not miss the Waterfowl Fall Fling, followed by the three-day Pro Shop Extravaganza on the 17 th , 18 th and 19 th of this month. Italian Night will be held on November 23 rd . Please come out and support the TCC… our staff is waiting for you. With the winter months ahead of us, you may see some capital projects taking place. We will be adding drain- age to the greens on holes # 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 & 8. This drainage is the same as we installed on holes 7, 9 & 14. It is our goal to have this drainage in all greens before the start of the 2013 golf season. We will continue with bun- ker renovations, cart path repair and, as during previous winters, Guy and his staff will be pruning the trees around TCC to keep them healthy and the golf course playable. Due to the resignation from the Board of one of our Governors, and in accordance with the Club’s Bylaws, the Board of Governors appointed TCC member, George Domurot, to complete the unexpired term of the resigned Governor. George and his wife, Beverly, have been members of TCC since 2006. The Board of Governors feels George will bring valuable knowledge and experience to the TCC Board. As we enter the winter months, we may see our resignation numbers increase slightly. I can assure you, how- ever, the Membership Committee, along with Chris Wyles and Kelly Hall, have put together some great incen- tives for our future members as well as for our existing membership. Please review these incentives and make that call to a friend or someone you feel would make a great TCC member. One of the best ways for us to pre- vent future increases in dues is by adding new members. The incentive plans that were introduced in 2010-11 have worked wonderfully. All but one membership continued after the first year. If you have someone that you would like to see here at TCC, please let Chris Wyles know and he will work with you and the new prospec- tive member with a tour of our great facilities. Please join the Board of Governors and me at the Club’s Annual Meeting to be held on December 6, 2011. I hope to see you there. Handicap Committee The Golf Committee has recently formed a Handicap Committee. The members of this committee are: Ralph Cruikshank, George Domurot, Mary Newcomb and Will Shannahan. This committee was formed to (1) Educate the club members on the rules governing handicaps and (2) Resolve any issues brought forth by a club member concerning handicaps. The first part of our charter is the education requirement. To meet this requirement the committee will publish monthly explanations of what is a handicap, how is it calculated and what you need to do to keep it up to date. The second part of our charter will only be needed if a situation arises concerning an individ-ual’s handicap. If you have any questions concerning handicaps, either your own or another member, please contact a member of the Handicap Committee. This Month's Handicap Tip: You should post your score within 24 hours after the completion of your round. You can post your score at the Handicap Terminal in the Pro Shop, directly online via the Club web site (http://www.talbotcc.com) or via the ForeTees Web Site. If you have a problem posting your score, please ask the Pro Shop or a member of the Handicap Committee for assis-tance.

NOTES FROM THE SHORT GRASS Marc D. Kimminau, PGA Professional

The golf season has ended with league play; however, there are still plenty of good days to get out and enjoy the Eastern Shore fall weather. Your Professional Staff will be working diligently over the winter to plan for next season. We have some exciting news from the golf committee that will please many members. At the request of many members, we are going to experiment in the 2012 season with earlier tee times!

During May and September, when our first tee time on Saturdays and Sundays has been 8 a.m., we will now be starting at 7:30 a.m. During June, July and August, when 7:30 a.m. has been our first tee time on Saturdays and Sundays, it will now be 7 a.m.

We have recently formed a Handicap Committee, at the suggestion of the Golf Committee. This committee will be featuring a monthly article in the Voice and will be available to address any handicap issues that may arise. Look for their interesting handicap guidelines provided each month.

The Pro Shop continues to be open throughout the year and is a great place to find gifts for all, even the non-golfer! Currently all short sleeve shirts, shorts and women’s bottoms in the Pro Shop are Buy 1 / Get 1 FREE. Stop by and check out the selection. In addition, complimentary gift wrap is always available. Your Profes-sional Staff greatly appreciates your business and continued support of the Talbot CC Pro Shop.

REMINDER… Beginning Monday, November 7th, the Pro Shop and practice facilities will be closed on Mon-days. You may walk and carry your bag after 12 noon on the front nine. Please make prior arrangements to pick up your clubs or speed cart, as there will be no staff here on Mondays for access.

Pro Shop Hours -- November - March Monday - Closed Tuesday through Sunday - Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Club Repair / Re-gripping

During the off season is a great time of year to re-grip your clubs. You generally never have to be without them and the next time you play they will feel like NEW! Call a member of the staff to discuss.

Traveling during the off season? Plan to make golf a part of your trip. Contact a member of the Professional Staff and we can make recommendations or try to arrange golf at a private club near your destination. In addi-tion, we have Pro Am opportunities in exciting destinations like Kiawah Island, Cabo San Lucas, Bahamas, Ja-maica, Scotland or Ireland at various times of the year!

Golf Committee

What a wonderful October we have had. Guy’s successful aeration allowed us to play some late season golf on beautiful greens due to their rapid recovery and his expertise.

Rounds are up again this year. Next year we will be trying tee times one-half hour earlier than this year, in or-der to accommodate our early golfers. Be ready to get on ForeTees to make those tee times! As always you can call the Pro Shop as well.

The Golf Committee has formed a HANDICAP sub-committee to inform the membership on how the USGA handicap system functions and to address any handicap issues at TCC. Chaired by Ralph Cruikshank, the com-mittee consists of George Domurot, Will Shannahan and Mary Newcomb. Look for the monthly articles in the VOICE, as well as seminars at the Club. These informational seminars, along with Marc’s rules instruction, will improve our play at TCC.

Please remember to check in with the pro shop, even during the winter months. There is still a lot of golf to be played. Also, don’t miss the Pro Shop Extravaganza! This is a great opportunity to purchase holiday gifts for the golfers in your family.

QUOTE of the MONTH: “I accept the fact that I’m going to miss it sometimes. I just hope I miss it where I can find it!” Fuzzy Zoeller

Greens and Grounds During October, the Greens and Grounds crew concentrated on aeration. The greens, which were done first, have healed nicely with well-timed rainfall and cooler weather. Once the greens were finished, the tees and ap-proaches were so efficiently aerated that golfers were surprised to see that the work had been done.

Work will soon be underway to continue improving greenside bunker drainage, starting with number seventeen and then moving to fifteen and eighteen.

Golfers were pleased to see an attractive removable foot bridge placed in the wet area at the approach to the twelfth red and white tees. It’s good to walk up to that tee without getting soaked feet. As reported earlier, the new bridges crossing the fourteenth fairway creek bed will be built in the early off-season when weather keeps the workers inside. The new bridges will be slightly wider to accommodate speed cart wheels.

The huge oak tree that fell on the fairway in front of the men’s third tee has been removed by a professional tree service. The oak tree that fell into the water on number seven will be more difficult to remove, but at least that one does not interfere with play. The limbing-up of tree branches around the seventh green has been com-pleted, but more has to be done behind the fourteenth green.

If you have had a lost ball this month, it was despite the heroic efforts of the crew to blow away the constantly falling leaves. A lost ball is small price to pay, though, for golfing at such a pleasant time of year.
