From the Editor

Well ,Wakes 2013 has been saved. Yes we always knew it would be, but

what a turnout and what enthusiasm from the new committe and others there. If only they can arrange a spot of hot and sunny weather too.

The second/holiday home debate rumbles on and an interesting letter was received this week from one ‘semi-resident’. Food for thought and in contrast to the back page letter which also came through the door this month.

Elsewhere the usual mixture of events, coffee and culture. There’s lots to do this month in Tideswell and District which just goes to prove that it’s a great place to live and work, full, part-time or even for a short spell when we’re on holiday.

Happy November folks and remember it’s variety that makes this village the place it is.

Tideswell Wakes Festivities 2013…..(crepe paper flowers and fancy dress at the ready!!!)

The AGM meeting held on 9 October was extremely successful and I am pleased to announce a new Committee for 2013 has been elected.

On behalf of the new Committee I would like to say thank you to the retiring Committee, namely Phil Swarbrick, for his continued commitment to deliver Wakes for us all every year. Phil’s dedication and hard work resulted in us having a carnival. I would personally like to thank him for my endless supply of cones and high-viz jackets (!). Seriously, though, Phil – thank you. You and your team did a great job. You have all been very supportive of the new kids on the block – this is greatly appreciated.

I would like to also extend my gratitude to the people of Tideswell (old and new) who attended the AGM and others who have passed on words of encouragement and support for the future. We have had some really good ideas so far, although I am still unsure where Ferrets are purchased and whether we have the budget (I am sure someone will let us know). It is this continuing support and the kind offers of help which will ensure “Tidza Wakes” does not fade away… who wants to talk about the good old days when we can continue to live them?

All ideas are welcome from all groups and individuals. Carnival is a time for everyone and we will try our very best to ensure we do a good job for you all. Regular updates will be made available via posters in the village or via this publication. However feel free to stop any of the Committee members to share your ideas for 2013.

The Committee’s next engagements will be the Remembrance Service and Christmas Festivities. Father Christmas has already got our email address and has confirmed he will be visiting the village in December.

In the meantime, I would like to say a massive thank you to the new members of the team for volunteering their time to make Tideswell Wakes 2013 the best it can be!

New members for PDNPA?

People are invited to apply to be a member of the Peak District National

Park Authority’s governing body for the next four years.

People with experience of working with the voluntary sector, young people and strategic planning are particularly welcomed to apply.

Members take strategic policy decisions on conservation, recreation, access, land management, planning and resources, as well as dealing with planning applications throughout the Peak District National Park.

The Authority has responsibilities to look after the national park for the nation as well as for local communities, so the successful candidate will be expected to reflect both national and local interests.

The appointment will initially be for four years from April 2013, with the option of re-appointment for a total of up to eight years.

The deadline for applications is Friday November 16. For more details about the Peak District National Park, go to www.peakdistrict.gov.uk

Tidza Ramblers

A sharp morning frost was a good omen for last month’s walk. From Rushup

Edge the mist over the Hope Valley looked like a white sea. Patterns of light changed continually this day and at lunchtime the same valley was temporarily in darkness due to an offending cloud. We counted

twenty hang gliders over Mam Tor and also spotted a neat formation of migrating geese.

On Kinder a lone conservationist was painstakingly positioning heavy stones to make a fixed path over the eroded ground. When asked what time he’d be finishing work that day he replied, ‘When ‘ave ‘ad enough.’ Seeing him working there no-one would have begrudged this flexitime.

It was a great walk, ending as it had begun, in brilliant sunshine.

MS@VK

Buried in the lower columns of our newspapers lie the revelations of those

having MS; those that are slightly more famous than our Tideswell possy. Jack Osbourne 26, son of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, recently found out that he had MS after losing a lot of vision and having a period of numbness in his legs. Also Ann Romney, 63, has hit the headlines as wife of Mitt Romney the Republican candidate for the US presidency. Although she is managing her symptoms, in the past Ann has experienced numbness, dizziness, muscle weakness, mobility problems and extreme fatigue. All going to show that MS knows no boundaries except (random fact coming up) if you live around the equator where MS isn’t found.

However I’m confident that we wont be discussing such matters at our next MS Gathering as we chuckle our way through the morning. Our next date is: Saturday 17th November, 10:30 - 12:00 @ Vanilla Kitchen’s Ice cream parlour. Do get in touch if you would like a lift or any more details.

Gardens R Us

We would like to start with a big thank you to Alan & Barbara Gratton for

donating a garden bench to the Kitchen Garden. Alan and Barbara live in Dove Holes but used to live in Tideswell. The seat was collected and is now positioned in the garden available for anyone to come and sit a while. I am sure it will get well used. If you haven’t already found the garden, do come and visit sometime. You’ll find it just behind the library.

The flowers as well as the vegetables are now coming to the end for this year but please feel free to take Marigold seed from either the Bank Square or the Fountain Square Gardens to throw in your garden for flowering next year.

If you would like to get involved in any way please contact Mary (871817), Judy (872408) or Maureen (871542) – we would love to hear from you.

Tideswell Cinema

This month’s film won awards across the world including the Grand Prize at

Cannes in 2010.

It is a powerful story set in North Africa in the 1990s, called ‘Of Gods and Men’ and is in French and Arabic, with subtitles.

Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers, in a monastry perched high in the mountains. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps through the region, and the monks have to chose whether to stay or leave. The army offers them protection, which they refuse, and despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realise they have no choice but to stay.

It will be shown on Thursday 29th November at 7.30pm upstairs at The George. Guest membership is available for the evening at £4.75. Season members can take their seats from 7pm, to ensure they have a place. Guests may take seats from 7.15pm.

CHOCOLATE & BANANAS!

Two people from our village will be in Ghana this month, and will be part

of a group visiting the fairtrade cocoa plantations that supply Divine Chocolate and the Co-op’s own brand chocolate bars.

They will also see the banana plantation, Oke, that is one of the suppliers of Fairtrade bananas to the Co-op - they were on the shelves in Tideswell this summer. So hopefully before long these pages can reveal more about these two yummy products that we can buy in our own village. (If you’ve never tried Divine Chocolate, you can buy it in Oxfam shops, or at the twice monthly Traidcraft stall in the Parish Church - it’s delicious.)

Christmas VoicesTideswell Singers are planning Christmas concert with a difference this year, so we would like you to make a note of Christmas Voices 7:30 pm Wednesday 12 December, The Old Grammar School, Tideswell. We will be offering our audience the opportunity to listen to the Christmas story afresh as we sing new carols and hear the voices of minor characters retelling this major event.

‘The Manchester Carols’ were first performed at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2008. As all who worked on them - librettist, Carol Ann Duffy (appointed Poet Laureate in 2009), composer Sasha Johnson Manning, conductor, musicians and children all live in Manchester, that is what they are called.

We have chosen six carols from the collection and Buxton based writer, Caroline Small has written short monologues which add a new insight to the familiar story. We will be joined by a local recorder ensemble.

Please join us for this concert which will last about an hour and then socialise with a glass of mulled wine or fruit punch and mince pie, included in the admission price of £6. Tickets will be available shortly from Tideswell Stores, Litton Village Shop and on the door.

For more information call Carol Bowns (01298 213 577) or visit www.tideswellsingers.org.uk

Holiday Cottage Debate

Dear Sir,

I bought a home in Tideswell some 13 years ago but am beginning to feel like an ‘evil criminal’ thanks to opinions expressed in recent Village Voices. One contributor described people like myself as part of an ‘evil’. Surely harmful prejudice lurks in such terms.

I personally have spent at least a third of my time in the village. I make no profit from my house here but spend money locally, watch local plays, carnivals, bonfire displays and have made aprons donated to the children of Litton for their Maypole dance. I mow my neighbour’s lawn, dig his garden when I can and have painted his house.

I am by no means rich, living on approximately £14,000 per year. I am happy to pay local rates in return for my share of local services. Incidently they are almost half as much again in cost compared to what are paid in the area I have worked in for 30 plus years.

It is easy and dangerous to assume people like me own two houses. I am willing to admit whether rightly or wrongly locals often own two houses, making profit by renting out their spare home. Each household has a different story. So far I have enjoyed being a semi resident in Tideswell bringing my hard-earned cash to the area, but am now thinking that I am the possible target of a local prejudiced antagonism. This doesn’t leave a pleasant ‘taste of Tideswell’.

Parish Council Matters

At the October meeting, no members of the public attended, although an email

had been received from Taste Tideswell asking to attend. Any residents may attend the beginning of the meetings to discuss matters, and it is hoped that Taste Tideswell will send a representative to the November 12th meeting.

No correspondence has been received from Derbyshire Dales District Council regarding the public toilets. The Parish Council will not take over responsibility until certain criteria are met.

Several matters were brought to the meeting which were not on the agenda. Residents are reminded that contact should be through the Parish Clerk, Lesley Bramwell, email [email protected] or phone 01298 872000 so that their issues may be put on to the agenda and discussed fully. Alternatively, people are encouraged to attend the opening session as already mentioned.

Tideswell Male Voice Choir has submitted plans for three wooden cabins to the rear of the Old Grammar School. The Parish Council has given positive comments and approval of the scheme. The decision will be made by the normal planning route.

As autumn and winter approach, plans for winter gritting are under way.

The County Council has been informed of the slippery surface of Hardy Lane, and also asked to review their decision about certain footpaths and pavements which DCC says are safe, and the Parish Council feels are unsafe.

Plans were made for the Remembrance Service on November 11th. The new URC minister Steve Fisher will conduct the service.

Joy For Joy

Joy Bramley, a member of Buxton Soroptimists has been given the Queen’s

award in recognition for her work with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The autumn season is busy for all the members as they prepare for the Charity Christmas Card Shop which will be held from Nov 5th for one week at the St John’s church, Buxton. All expenses are paid by members, and the total profits go to the charities involved.

HADIT Drama Offering

Once a year family gatherings, laughter and reminiscences, food and drink

Plenty is the short answer! To find out more get your tickets now for HADIT’s forthcoming production Season’s Greetings. This is vintage Alan Ayckbourn and guarantees you an evening of delicious and uproarious fun. Methodist Church Hall, Edale Road, Hope. Wed 5th–Sat 8th December at 7.30 pm. The Nutcracker live

Tideswell Cinema continues its season of events from the London stage with

a live screening of The Nutcracker on Thursday, 13 December at 7pm in The George Hotel, Commercial Road, Tideswell. It is highly likely that we will also run a matinee screening at 3pm on Saturday 15 December and details will be published on our website www.tideswellcinema.org.uk

From the very first notes of Tchaikovsky’s overture to The Nutcracker, a sense of mystery and magic pervades the theatre as Herr Drosselmeyer sets in train the events that will see his beloved nephew, Hans Peter, freed from the enchantment of the evil Mouse King by the resourceful Clara. Peter Wright’s classic production, first seen at Covent Garden in 1984, is an essential part of Christmas for audiences of all ages.

Tickets go on general sale on 12 November, cost £12 full price (£10 concession) and may be obtained by calling Tony Wilson on 01298 872379 or by email from [email protected]

Funeral Notices

Last month’s piece about the best place to post funeral notices has prompted

action and a new poem both from Jen Bower our district councillor.

IN PASSING.Now if you live in Tideswellbut should happen to be deadfear not as news of your demisein retail outlets can be read

The Funeral Directoror grieving relly could informof the death of Tidza peopleand the manner of the mourn.

These death notices first appearedin Chapman’s newsagents shopbut when it closed a new place was soughtto inform of clogs that pop!

The notices moved across the wayto sit in Philip’s place.Handy for all to read and learnof the one’s who’d lost life’s race.

But this public display of death in lifeby the owners of Tidza Storescame to the Post Office’s noticeand its bureaucratic bores.

They said “We don’t like death noticesputting people off our stamps,on this community practicewe shall come down with our clamps.

So kindly Phil he racked his brainsto find a neat solution. He’d move the offending articlesand stop the stamp pollution.

He’d put the black-lined papersin amongst the shops small-ads. They could jostle midst the bits and bobsthe jobs and holiday pads.

Well, what a to do this did causeamongst the Tidza folk.On Facebook rose a hue and cry. They thought it was a joke!

How demeaning, how despicableto learn of friends dispatchby searching through the little adsthat filled the small-ads patch.

So – how to find an answerto this modern day dilemmato pacify the upset crowdto calm this seismic tremor?

Well, if the gloomy news filled noteshad once moved at a hopwhy not move them back againto their old haunt – Chapman’s shop?

No longer printing press at workDoug, Lester, Joyce no longer thereinstead an ice-cream parlourwith a cafe up the stair.

New owner Robert Walkerhe was happy to obligeto help the grieving Tidza folklearn of any sad demise.

So the moral of this storythat is if one you’d soughtis to look for simple answerswhen displaying news of “Il est mort!”

One month in Tidza

It is the end of one month living in Tideswell. It’s different. People smile and

say hello. There’s a butcher, a baker, maybe a candlestick maker. There’s pride aplenty in the place. There’s a sense of community. I like it. Different, yes.

As a newcomer, I received a welcome pack – what a good idea. I lived in the Isle of Man for nearly 20 years and was regarded as a “come over”, an intruder into the Manx way of life, until the day I left. I had lived in south-east England before that, where you might never get to know your neighbours’ names. The welcome pack included details of a gardener. Within little more than half a day she turned a wilderness behind my cottage, in which my Border Terrier could disappear without trace, into a clear and clean patch of land ripe for cultivating. Several truck loads of rubbish and rubble were despatched. Through her, I found a plumber who actually turned up when he said he would, quickly sorted out my problem and left without draining my pocket. When I told the lady in the local gallery that my

budget would be bashed by that price, she negotiated willingly and I left with the print I had wanted so much. And when I fancied a sandwich and called into a little shop, there was a choice of ingredients that would have done Fortnums proud, with the quality service to match.

As a child I spent considerable time with my grandparents in Sheffield and was introduced to the delights of the peaks and dales of this part of Derbyshire. Grandad used to bring me to Tideswell, where he worked for an industrial magnate in the hand tools business. I would sit on a wall in the sunshine or play on the lawn while grandad did whatever it was he used to do. I was about five-years-old but the place stayed in my memory. Gentle, joyful memories.

Now, more than 60 years later, I am back. By now, I am old enough to really appreciate tasty Tideswell. I regard myself as a rather lucky fellow.
