Resilience and reliabilityBreaching of the sea defences, cliff falls and fl ooding in 2014 cost business and communities around £1.2bn and the rail industry a further £91m.
The £621m of investment proposed will:
• create a more resilient rail service for businesses, communities and the tourism industry.
• increase business confi dence, boost potential inward investment and expansion in the South West peninsula.
• reduce the level of unplanned works and investment required.
3-Point Plan Priorities
Reduced journey times and improved connectivity£1.88bn investment proposed for journey time improvement will generate £7.2bn in GVA and £1.1bn in direct transport benefi ts for the UK economy by:
• improving access to markets, increasing productivity and unlocking growth in the South West peninsula.
• improving opportunities for education, employment, housing, leisure, tourism and increasing social inclusion.
• increasing modal shift to rail, reducing road congestion and pollution, improving air quality leading to a more effi cient use of our transport infrastructure.
Capacity and comfort£567m of investment is proposed to increase the availability, frequency and capacity of rail services, together with pioneering digital services which will:
• improve the productivity of business users travelling by train and support economic growth in the South West peninsula and maximise the benefi ts of Crossrail and the western access to Heathrow Airport.
• improve the journey experience for visitors and support the tourism industry which is worth £8.6bn a year to the South West economy.
• improve the opportunity for more travel to work journeys by rail.
