The Rampage Line of Credit, For a 7 Year Old As a kid, I remember standing in the checkout line at the store and always asking my dad if I could get a candy bar. I remembered that feeling of wanng to get somethinganything really. It wasnt because I needed it, but rather because I just wanted to feel like I was able to buy something. With kids of my own now, every me we go to the store, one of the kids asks if they can buy something, from a toy, to shoes, to something to eat. They have that same feeling of just wanng to buy something. My response is usually no, not today. But on this one specific day, aſter I inially responded with no,I thought a lile more about how I could get her to understand why she cant just buy everything, all the me. So, as we walked through Kohls I made a quick decision to extend her a line of credit. We sat in the aisle as I explained to my 7-year-old (and tried to explain to my 4-year-old), what a line of credit meant. I told her that I would give her $10 of credit to spend today, however she had to pay it back to me within the next 5 days. She asked how was she going to pay it back? I explained that I would give her a list of chores that she would get paid for, but she would, in turn, need to use it to pay her line of credit. She asked, what If I dont pay my line of credit?I then explained further that if the line wasnt paid, the toy would be taken back (aka repossessed). She had unl Sunday to pay her line of credit. I explained to her that if she paid it in me, it would be used again in the future, but it always needed to be paid on me and could not exceed her limit of $10. I re- minded her only 2x about the deadline and the consequences if the line of credit wasnt paid down, she may have waited unl the last day, but she did it before the deadline. The first month, she wanted to use her line of credit oſten, but she soon began to see if she used it on something she didnt really want, well, then she could possibly miss out on something she actually wanted. So, as me went on, she would pay it down and leave it open. Then one day, it must have really clicked. She said to me, so if you al- ways pay your line of credit, then can you start to get more credit? (she clearly had her eye on something big). I told her, in short, yes. Her re- sponse was quick with So is that why you drive a big car, because you have good credit? She was thinking the right way and understanding what it meant to be responsible with her money. Some say, why not just have her fill her piggy bank first, then use her own money to buy things. Yes, we do this, but I also wanted her to understand credit. We all would prefer to use cash, however most of us also have credit (credit card, loan, etc.). It helped her understand that you can sll buy something (1) if you need it, and (2) if you are responsible about your spending. Its also fun to be able to take something real-life and extend it to your kids. My hope is that when she turns 18 and credit card compa- nies hound her to open account, she will remember how credit works and the importance of not overspending. Newsletter Date November 5, 2017 1

The Rampage Line of Credit, For a 7 Year Old

As a kid, I remember standing in the checkout line at the store and always asking my dad if I could get a candy bar. I remembered that feeling of wanting to get something…anything really. It wasn’t because I needed it, but rather because I just wanted to feel like I was able to buy something.

With kids of my own now, every time we go to the store, one of the kids asks if they can buy something, from a toy, to shoes, to something to eat. They have that same feeling of just wanting to buy something. My response is usually “no, not today.”

But on this one specific day, after I initially responded with “no,” I thought a little more about how I could get her to understand why she can’t just buy everything, all the time. So, as we walked through Kohl’s I made a quick decision to extend her a line of credit.

She asked, “what If I don’t pay my line of credit?” I then explained further that if the line wasn’t paid, the toy would be taken back (aka repossessed). She had until Sunday to pay her line of credit. I explained to her that if she paid it in time, it would be used again in the future, but it always needed to be paid on time and could not exceed her limit of $10. I re-minded her only 2x about the deadline and the consequences if the line of credit wasn’t

paid down, she may have waited until the last day, but she did it before the deadline.

The first month, she wanted to use her line of credit often, but she soon began to see if she used it on something she didn’t really want, well, then she could possibly miss out on something she actually wanted. So, as time went on, she would pay it down and leave it open.

Then one day, it must have really clicked. She said to me, so if you al-ways pay your line of credit, then can you start to get more credit? (she clearly had her eye on something big). I told her, in short, yes. Her re-sponse was quick with “So is that why you drive a big car, because you have good credit?” She was thinking the right way and understanding what it meant to be responsible with her money.

Some say, why not just have her fill her piggy bank first, then use her own money to buy things. Yes, we do this, but I also wanted her to understand credit. We all would prefer to use cash, however most of us also have credit (credit card, loan, etc.). It helped her understand that you can still buy something (1) if you need it, and (2) if you are responsible about your spending. It’s also fun to be able to take something real-life and extend it to your kids. My hope is that when she turns 18 and credit card compa-nies hound her to open account, she will remember how credit works and the importance of not overspending.

Meet Ms. Reese, Art Teacher

Often times it’s the teachers of the ‘Specials’ that go unnoticed because it’s only 1 or 2 times per week. But to the kids, these classes are some of their favorites. Ms. Reese teaches K-2 Art at Waddell. She has been teaching there for the past 5 years, so it’s likely one of your children has attended her class. After reading her interview, you can feel the excitement and joy she has for art and for life. We asked Ms. Reese to tell us a little bit more about herself, and here is what we learned... How long have you been teaching? This is my 5th year being a K-2 Art teacher and I love it more each year What made you want to become a teacher? I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I saw how much of an impact I could make on a young individual. You don't have to be great at art to enjoy it. I love seeing kids light up when they draw something for the first time or to see their reaction when they start mixing colors together....I mean who doesn't love to paint and draw every day? Where did you grow up? What was it like? I grew up in a small farming village (it wasn't big enough to be called a town) in Northwest Ohio. I went to a K-12 school - yes, all of the kids in town fit into ONE SCHOOL! We drove tractors and 4-wheelers around and enjoyed being outdoors all the time. What's your biggest accomplishment in life? My biggest accomplishment has been running an ultramarathon, which was 31 miles of non-stop running through the mountain biking trails at the U.S. National White Water Center. It has been the most mental challenge I have ever had to get through and took months of preparation, both phys-ically and mentally. —"Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go" - T.S. Eliot Tell us something funny that happened to you? I was baking one night and had melted butter in the microwave. I put it down to get other ingredients and before I knew it one of our cats had his huge head in the bowl licking all the butter. He's a big fan of anything food related! If you were not a teacher, what would you be? A world traveler! What are you hobbies outside of teaching? Outside of teaching I enjoy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, running, and drawing. If you could go anywhere, do anything or be anyone for one day, money wasn't an issue, what would you do? I would travel to Phuket, Thailand - it looks absolutely amazing!

Waddell’s Word of the Week By Audrey Kleinschmidt, Grade 5

I reached out to postsecondary writing instructors across North Carolina to investigate trends in

their students’ writing. The common refrain in their responses was that student writing skills had

diminished over the past 15 years and that it appeared that writing had not been a priority in their

students’ previous classes.

Do you want to learn more about hosting a Waddell Academic Volunteer (AV)? Waddell hosts international AVs each year who volunteer in our 2-5the grade classes. Last year we welcomed 29 AVs who volunteered in our Ger-man, French, Chinese, and Japanese classes. This school year we are anticipating close to 40 AVs. These AVs add a tremendous amount of support to the classrooms so we love seeing the program grow! Unlike interns, our AVs do not receive financial contributions for their teaching assistance and so providing a family to host them is part of our commitment to their volunteer efforts. Hosting opportunities can run from 2 weeks to the entire school year so there is an opportunity for every family. In addition, Weekend Host families are needed when long-term host families have other commitments and are a great way to 'get your feet wet'.

The Waddell AV program can only grow if we continue to have host families willing to assist. If you are interested in learning more about our AV program, or have questions about what is involved in being a host family please contact Cat McClain, [email protected] or 704-293-7730.
