Drugstore Diagnoses

A California-based company is currently working with Walgreens to provide clinician-directed lab testing a reality

to their stores. What does that mean for us? They are touting that they will be able to provide easier and cheap-

er diagnostic testing of “hundreds of diseases” to the consumers. Blood samples will be taken with a tiny finger

stick or a micro sample from traditional methods eliminating the need for larger needles and numerous vials of

blood. Test results will be sent to physicians in hours rather than days. These low cost tests will be covered by

major insurance carriers, Medicare and Medicaid.

How and where we get health care has dramatically changed just in the past decade. Technological advances have

and will continue to push even break the boundaries we thought sacred. I think, ultimately as consumers, we

Need to continue to look at all our options with a critical eye.

On Friday, October 4, 2013, home-grown adventurer Jesse Osborn visited Seward

Middle School and shared with the 8th Graders details of his summer 2013 sailing ex-

pedition through the Northwest Passage. Captain Osborn’s presentation was the capstone

to a collaborative 8th grade history and science unit developed by teachers Myla Liljemark and

Naomi Wade. In the unit, students learned about European exploration in the 1500s and 1600s

along with global warming’s impact on Arctic ice. Jesse Osborn, captain of the sailing vessel the

Empericus, returned in September from sailing the once impassable Northwest Passage which is

now navigable as a result of melting Arctic ice. With his gift of storytelling, Captain Osborn

shared details of his experiences and lessons he learned with captivated 8th graders. Throughout his stories, his message of

living life for the adventure that it is and taking school seriously (especially math class) was woven throughout. Seward Middle

School is thankful for the time Captain Osborn spent with Seward’s middle school students. If you are looking for an inspira-

tional speaker and an informative experience, track down Captain Osborn. He has a story to tell!
