“Now That I Am Saved, Can I Ever Lose My Salvation?" Since the Bible declares that salvation is entirely the work of God the believer can be fully confident that nothing can reverse what He (God) has done! Once an individual has settled the question of salvation as the Bible declares it — by grace through faith in Jesus Christ — it is important that he understands how his new position in Christ affects his entire life. In Lesson 3, we learned that there are only two spiritual families on earth, God's family and the devil's family. We learned that we were born into the devil's family at the time of our physical birth, and we are born into God's family when we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior (John 1:12-13). In this lesson, we will discuss the position of the new believer in God's family, and from the biblical facts, seek to establish the doctrine of the eternal security of the Christian. Study the testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself on this subject. 1. Jesus Christ promises that "... him that cometh to me I will never cast out." (John 6:37) God will not cast you out of his family under any circumstances. 2. John 10:27-29 makes it clear that no one can cause you to lose your salvation because we are held securely by God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Okay, God won't cast me out, and no one can take me out of His hand, but what about myself? Can I do something to lose my salvation? Based on the following Scriptures, 1. Salvation is by grace through faith, and not by works. It is a GIFT from God. No man can lose his salvation, because no man earned his salvation. If it were up to you to hold on to the gift of salvation, then you would have reason to boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 2. Also, if we attain salvation by keeping God’s commands then we would have to continue keeping God’s commands to maintain our salvation. But, the facts are that none of us kept God’s commands before salvation and none of us keep them after our salvation. Christ alone was without sin and kept the Law. Our Security is in what He accomplished not in what we do. 3. The following verses all emphasize this point. Galatians 3:10, James 2:10 and 2 Tim. 1:12. 4. Galatians 2:21 states clearly that if we could become righteous or stay righteous by anything we do, then Jesus Christ's death was unnecessary. Page 1 of 1 Lesson 104

“Now That I Am Saved, Can I Ever Lose My Salvation?"

Since the Bible declares that salvation is entirely the work of God the believer can be fully confident that nothing can reverse what He (God) has done!

1. Jesus Christ promises that "... him that cometh to me I will never cast out."

(John 6:37) God will not cast you out of his family under any circumstances. 2. John 10:27-29 makes it clear that no one can cause you to lose your salvation

because we are held securely by God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Okay, God won't cast me out, and no one can take me out of His hand, but what about myself? Can I do something to lose my salvation?

Based on the following Scriptures, 1. Salvation is by grace through faith, and not by works. It is a GIFT from God. No

man can lose his salvation, because no man earned his salvation. If it were up to you to hold on to the gift of salvation, then you would have reason to boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

2. Also, if we attain salvation by keeping God’s commands then we would have to

continue keeping God’s commands to maintain our salvation. But, the facts are that none of us kept God’s commands before salvation and none of us keep them after our salvation. Christ alone was without sin and kept the Law. Our Security is in what He accomplished not in what we do.

3. The following verses all emphasize this point. Galatians 3:10, James 2:10 and 2

Tim. 1:12. 4. Galatians 2:21 states clearly that if we could become righteous or stay righteous

by anything we do, then Jesus Christ's death was unnecessary. Page 1 of 1 Lesson 104

Okay, God won't cast me out, no one can cause me to lose my salvation, and I cannot lose it myself, but is there anything else that can cause me to lose my salvation? No. Romans 8:38-39 says, "For I am persuaded that neither:

"Death" — you can't lose it when you die.

"Life"— you can't lose it while you are alive.

"Angels" — can't take it from you.

"Principalities" — no authority can take it from you.

"Powers" — satanic rulers can't cause you to lose it.

"Things present"— nothing happening right now can take it away.

"Things to come"—nothing in the future can make you lose it.

"Height" — nothing above you.

"Depth" — nothing below you.

"Nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Additional Truths: 1. Your relationship with God is now a father/son relationship by birth. Review

John 1:12-13. 2. Your relationship to your earthly father is not based on what you do or do not

do; it is a relationship you received by physical birth. You can die, but you can never be unborn. In the same manner, your relationship to God is entered into by spiritual birth, and is not earned or lost by human accomplishments.

3. The Holy Spirit of God seals your spiritual birth. Ephesians

1:13,14 4. When you were saved, you received the gift of eternal life

(Rom. 6:23). If you could lose your salvation, then the gift wasn’t really eternal, was it?

Basic questions o How can I know for sure I am saved? (This is sometimes called the

Assurance.)

The epistle of I John is written for this purpose. I John 5:13 says, "Thave I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of Godmay know that ye have eternal life... " As a new Christian, I John shprimary focal point to help you grow and to settle this issue.

Three proofs for your assurance of salvation. Take this test… 1. Do you have a Biblical conversion, that is, are you trusting in Christ, alone, as your Lord and Savior?

2. Does the Holy Spirit witness with your spirit that you are truly in His family? See Romans 8:12-17.

3. Am I exhibiting the characteristics of a saved person as laid out in I John and other passages of scripture?

o Do I have a growing sensitivity to sin in my life? (I John 1:5) o Is there a growing commitment to obey the Word of God? (I John 2:3) o Do I have an increasing love for other believers? (I John 2:9-11)

o What if I don't feel saved? Or what if I have doubts about my salvation?

1. Your salvation is not based on feelings. It is based upon the objective factual truth of the Word of God.

2. I John 3:20 “For whenever our heart condemn us (or, we think or feel unsaved), God is greater than our heart, and knows all things."

3. When you have doubts or even wonder if you said the right things when you were saved review the proofs of assurance and just believe what God has said! Titus 1:2 “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began." I John 2:25 “And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.”
