Now that we know how to get great websites and how to do the works cited page we still need to know how to write a paper and
how to use all that we have learned.
Choose from one of the following topics…
Select only ONE topic.
1- Nuclear power positive and negatives
2- Negative health impacts of smoking tobacco (cigarettes)
3- The importance of the scientific method.
4- Is Wal-Mart good for America or is Wal-Mart unfair to its employees?
See page 9 of your handout
You have two choices, you can write your paper as a 10 slide PowerPoint with at least 5 sentences on every slide, the last page can be your “works cited” page…
OR Write a 3 page paper in Word, the 3rd page can be
your “works cited” page.
You will have 3 periods total to write the entire paper for a total of approximately 2 hours of time in which to finish.
Remember, works cited page counts as 1 page =)Remember to use (MLA): citationmachine.netFor your works cited page as you go! See page
10 of your handout
I will be writing my own start to a sample paper on the following topic, this will be much shorter than yours (and you will be writing yours using Microsoft word or PowerPoint):
Are teachers underpaid or overpaid?
When starting any paper you should have your name, your teachers name, the class, and the date on the upper left of the 1st page followed by a paper title and Introductory PARAGRAPH.

Public school teachers: Underpaid or Overpaid?
There are some in society who feel that teachers are little more than glorified baby sitters. Some people feel that teachers are cruel and easily replaced. This paper will not argue that there can be some mean teachers out there instead it will focus on whether teachers are receiving an appropriate salary. “In the United States the average starting salary for a teacher in a school with 300 students is approximately $33,738” (IES 1).

Page # and Your name to do this just hit INSERT>PAGE NUMBER (change to upper right)
See page 4 of your handout
I actually used the citation machine but I could not find an author….however the author was actually the “ORGANIZATION” named IES (Institute of Education Sciences) so instead of a name in that footnote I used IES 1. 1 being the page # where the information was found. Sometimes you may leave out 1 piece if you really cannot find them (like the exact day the information was posted). The pieces you should NEVER leave out are the following:
See page 5 of your handout
1. Organization/Author (The person or group that wrote what you are quoting).
2. The year (you may not be able to find the exact date but you must ALWAYS have the year).
3. Date you found the information (retrieved).
4. Title of the webpage.5. Title of the ARTICLE or webpage
subheading you are quoting from.If you cannot get all of the above, you
CANNOT use that website! See page 6 of your handout
Finding the page #?
• Click on your page where you found the info and select PRINT PREVIEW.
• In the new window that opens you can scroll down and see just what page of the website that info is on, this is the page # you use in your footnote.
• Example: “In the United States the average starting salary for a teacher in a school with 300 students is approximately $33,738” (IES 1).
See page 7 of your handout
More of the sample paper….“In the United States the average starting salary for a teacher in a
school with 300 students is approximately $33,738” (IES 1). That may seem like a lot at first glance when you don’t take into account that some teachers have to drive to work and pay tolls and for their own gas. This amount can be pretty hefty. I know of some teachers I work with who pay $5,000 a year in gas and tolls. Add that to the fact that most teachers have to buy their own supplies which could cost an additional $1,000 for the year.
So the average teacher makes $27,738 after taxes that amount can drop another $3,000 to $24,738. Now we take into account that some teachers stay after work when they are not paid and give free tutoring, that in itself is priceless. Here is the most interesting fact, "the level of poverty in the United States for a family of 5 is $22,030” (USHD 1). That means if you make less than $22,000 you can collect welfare, food stamps and are considered by the state as in need of support. Are teachers really overpaid or underpaid?
The fact is I could have used HUGE amounts of quotes, this is great when doing say a country report and using a lot of information on average amount of people, salary, land masses, etc..
I am not done with my paper yet though and so I could always take a large block of text and insert it into my own paper, but it has to make sense. You cannot just use this skill at random or it will
HURT your grade and make your life
HARDER instead of EASIER. Use your powers for good =) Continuing the paper…
The day in the life of an average teacher is seemingly never-ending. Take for example a woman by the name of Michele Johnson or Miss Johnson as her students call her:
By 2 p.m. on a recent Monday, Johnson, 36, has taught three straight 86-minute classes, plowed into a stack of essays and chatted with visiting
graduates. She skipped breakfast and lunch. She did not take a bathroom break.
In spare moments, she checked records to see if one of her students needs to re-take the FCAT, corralled an administrator to ask about senior class privileges and phoned a motivational group she wants involved in freshmen orientation. She even began the process of booking Jethro the Pig for the school's kiss-a-pig contest. At 3:25 p.m., Johnson will head for the exit, but her life will orbit work for several more hours. (Matus 1)
Did you notice I didn’t use “”?Did you notice I indented each line
5 spaces? This is called a “block quote” they are awesome gifts
when you can find them. The fact is finding a HUGE paragraph to footnote and use is hard. You can’t just use any old block quote unless you have a reason to. If you write a nice lead in sentence or two though its not too hard to find a nice block quote. Remember don’t use them too often, as a rule of thumb your WORDS should always outnumber the OTHER people’s WORDS. In my sample I had a total of: 400 words. Of which my words were: 236 words. Which means I had 164 words which I didn’t have to TYPE at all! =)
Think about this in relation to a 10 page paper in 9th grade? That means 4-5 pages of the whole thing can be quotes spread throughout the paper. Please use what I am teaching you, it is by far the most powerful and helpful thing to learn in your grade level! You will not receive formal instruction on how to do this again until 9th grade, so hopefully you paid attention =)
Some final notes on Works Cited
• Always Alphabetize
• When writing the dates you should enter them as follows: DAY (#) MONTH (TEXT) YEAR (#).
• Example: 26 May 2006
• Most teachers will/should take points off for it, so beware!
