NSU celebrates Women’s History Month

The month of March is recognized as National Women’s History Month and the NSU
community is having different events to commemorate this month and honor the women of the
past present and future!
This national celebration started out as a designated wee" in the early #$s! %n &'#( due to a
petition by the National Women’s History )ro*ect +ongress passed a law stating the whole
month of March be ,Women’s History Month- for that particular year! .inally between &'## and
&''/ +ongress made changes and revised the law to authorize a proclamation stating every
March will be recognized Women’s History Month!
The NSU community is doing its part in ac"nowledging the month! 0ifferent events around
campus will include the N12 Women’s History photo contest a film series with an informal
post3screening forum brought to students by the +enter for Women’s Studies The 0epartment of
History and the NSU 1merican 0emocracy )ro*ect +ommittee and the NSU )olice 0epartment
will have a two3day 4!1!0! class for women!
,% strongly recommend every woman ta"e a self3defense class li"e this so they are both more
mentally and physically prepared if they were ever in a confrontational situation- said 5ames
Mynatt campus police officer! ,6ur goal is to offer 4!1!0! training once a month on a regular
basis and will do more if the re7uests are made!-
0r! 5ennifer 8dwards director of center for women9s studies and associate professor of
sociology said students can familiarize or recognize themselves with women’s history

throughout the year by watching documentaries or reading boo"s that focus on the history of
women or get involved with women’s organizations such as The 1merican 1ssociation of
University Women which has a student branch!
,Women have had to wor" very hard to combat gender ine7uality! Historically our society has
promoted traditional gender norms- said 8dwards! ,While we have come a long way in
producing a more egalitarian society women continue to face ine7uality! Therefore it is 7uite
important to recognize the struggles women have faced as well as to celebrate the progress that
has been made!-
Students can also be on the loo"out for any additional events happening in honor of Women’s
History Month! 1lso they should be aware of any opportunities to donate their time or items to
causes around town! 0r! Melissa Strong assistant professor of 8nglish said students in her intro
to women9s and gender studies class are coordinating an event and will do a supply drive for
Help3%n3+risis!
,6n March :& students in intro to women9s and gender studies will present an event open to the
NSU community! Students are organizing the event right now and more details will be
announced- said Strong! ,Supplies for Help3%n3+risis will be collected at the event! Help in
+risis9 website identifies the following needs; bath towels wash cloths full3size shampoo and
conditioner toilet paper and paper towels!-
