TO THE NTH DEGREEEXHIBITION ON EXTREMISTS

The nth degree is an outdoor exhibit on the characteristcs of violent extremists. The nth degree is looking to educate people on extremists, to help open the publics eyes on dif-ferent types of extremists not just terrorists. Radical Islamic groups, far right organizations or criminal gangs may have different goals in the end, but there are, simiarities. Yes they have different ideology, but how they organize, recruit and think are the same.

The exhibit itself is a 3D graph, based off of using the idea of a compass, showing how one can take something to the highest extreme. One can enter two ways, either looking at the projected data or starting from the inside.

Projected on the outside of the exhibit is data from visitors within the exhibit. Illustrating how people take things to the extreme or deviate from social norms.

Throughout the exhibit, questions will be asked having to do with the viewer. The questions are meant to help the viewer understand how extremists think and interpret things. The viewers will be scanning identification cards that they will get at the beginning of the exhibit. The ID cards will be able to track the viewr’s answers.

Extremists judge themselves in terms of their intentions. They are doing it for the better good. But with others they view their actions critically. They want you to accept their assertions of faith but demand proof of yours.

One example of an extremist group that does this is, The Army of God. They are an extremist anti abortion group that emphasizes pro life, yet is violent and even kills people to promote their point of view.

Character Assassination is the attack of a person’s character or image. Motives, qualifications, alleged values, personal-ity, looks and mental health are some topics that extremists will use to attack their enemies.

Political extremists are notorious for using this method. They seek to ruin a canidates reputation by using personal information against them and other means.

vs. The Splitting Effect is where an extremist see’s the world as good or evil, white or black. The saying “ Thoes who are not with me are against me” sums up what the splitting effect does.

Insulation, the act of isolating one’s self. With extremists, they view the world in back or white. They do not like hav-ing their ideals challenged in any way. With many extrem-ists groups you can see how they apply this to themselves.

Extremists generally don’t like uncertantity or ambiguity. They cannot stand failure and any failure they have they place on the blame of others. They tend to have manipula-tive qualtities and control isssues.
