    Introduction

While the main benets o cloud computing, decreased cost and ease o management, started the widespre

interest in this technology, its limitations, including security concerns and losing control over applications,

made savvy IT proessionals wary. This is rapidly changing as access to Inrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

oerings rom providers who have an in-depth knowledge o how to best leverage inrastructure services

or enterprise cloud applications becomes more widely available. From this experience our key themes have

emerged or justiying moving to cloud services. They are:

Enhanced Business Agility and Minimized Cost

    Streamlined IT Operations

    Seamless Integration and Customization

    Risk Management

Enhancing Business Agility means being able to respond aster and more eciently to business changes.

Giving companies the ability to expand and contract compute, storage and network capacity at-willdramatically reduces the time and cost required to develop new applications and deploy resources where th

are needed, when they are needed. This also helps minimize the time and cost to scale existing applications

    response to changing demand.

Streamlining IT Operationsby moving resources into the cloud helps the business ocus on their core

mission. This helps reduce the burden o maintaining compute, storage and network inrastructure in-house

Businesses need the ability to seamlessly integrate existing enterprise IT investments when moving to

    customized public and private clouds.

Finally, managing IT inrastructure is about managing risk. Loss o control o resources and maturity o the

resources being used introduce risk to the enterprise. Cloud technology consolidates resources onto shared

inrastructure with shared management. Cloud providers establish control over underlying enterprise

compute, storage and networking inrastructure. As a result, security, availability and perormance are

consistently identied as top CIO concerns.

The pace o change in the cloud computing industry rivals the intensive change seen at the start

o the Internet era. Cloud providers are innovating rapidly and new services and concepts are

being announced daily. With so many complex moving parts, choosing the right enterprise cloudprovider can be challenging.

This white paper provides an evaluation ramework or selecting an enterprise cloud provider or your

organization. Because the cloud is a fully integrated and highly dependent part of the companys IT

inrastructure, it cannot be evaluated as a standalone eature set. As a result, the ramework takes a complete

view of a companys IT requirements.

    Enterprise Cloud Evaluation Framework Overview

The enterprise cloud evaluation ramework is designed to ocus on key evaluation criteria that help a compa

evaluate cloud implementation strategies. Figure 1 highlights these key areas. This paper will provide

enterprises with objective advice as they evaluate an enterprise cloud providers ability to help meet busines

    and technical objectives.

Figure 1 Enterprise Cloud Evaluation Framework

    Enterprise-Grade and Industry-Standard

When a company acquires IT technology, it typically conducts a selection process including a review o the

perormance, reliability, compatibility and security attributes that will ulll the requirements o its IT needs.

Most large companies preer using proven technology rom proven innovative vendors that are trying to solv

the issues that IT organizations experience. Using best of class vendors with industry standard technology

makes integrating a cloud providers technology into an enterprises existing IT infrastructure much easier. Th

evaluation criteria or internal assets should apply to an enterprise cloud evaluation. A cloud provider should

be transparent about which vendor technologies are implemented and how this can aect a providers servi

level agreements. This allows enterprises to make inormed decisions on the reliability and viability o the

technology with which they will be integrating.

Are they comparable in quality, security and reliability to what you implement today withinyour internal IT environments?

Are the vendors and standards the enterprise cloud provider uses compatible with your owninternal IT vendors and standards?

If I were building this myself, what technology would I use?

How well does this integrate into my technology?

    Comprehensive and Controlled

Because the enterprise cloud does not operate in isolation rom the rest o the corporate IT

inrastructure it needs to meet or exceed the same enterprise-grade requirements o the existing

inrastructure. Security, visibility, transparency and overall governance capabilities must be core

to the enterprise cloud. To meet enterprise needs, a total solutiona complete answer to the

blended needs o the enterpriseis necessary. A comprehensive enterprise cloud strategy should

be comprised o a ull suite o services including managed services, consulting services, the abilityto customize hybrid solutions, management, monitoring, security and more.

As the enterprise cloud represents an integration o many inrastructure components, it is

important to understand how much o the cloud is under the direct control o the cloud provider

and how much fexibility the customer has in the cloud environment. The best way to assure

consistent perormance, availability and access is to work with enterprise cloud providers that

own and control all aspects o their cloud solution. Cloud service providers who manage their own

global networks, data centers, components and related services can assure consistent service levels,

transparency and accountability or their users.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

What cloud services do I need to solve my IT challenges?

Does your cloud provider allow you to implement a global hybrid public/privateenterprise-grade cloud solution including dedicated servers, managed services, colocationand customization?

Which of these managed services do they provide: security, storage, backup, network, disaster recovery, server operating system and application?

Are there other services that I would need in the future?

How much of the total solution does your cloud provider own and control?

    Unifed Management

A comprehensive enterprise cloud provider can oer companies a ull range o services necessary to

leverage the full potential of the cloud. Whether a company needs to implement a customized

    6/19

solution, dedicated servers, managed services or colocation as part o their cloud solution, a single

management portal or all services is the most ecient way to manage the day-to-day aspects o a

    cloud implementation.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does your cloud provider oer a single integrated portal or single pane-of-glass visibility to allo your services including cloud, dedicated servers, network services, managed services, integrated trouble ticketing, asset management and support? How easy is it to use this portal?

How do I access this portal?

    Who can access this portal?

    What rights can I assign?

    Enterprise Security

Cloud security is the top concern or CIOs today. An inormal survey o the public cloud space shows a wide

range o security maturity levels. For example, many enterprise cloud providers cannot implement a network

based intrusion detection system. Some providers settle or unknown sotware-based access control with

no logging or visibility, bypassing industry-standard and certied rewall systems. Most companies would

never take such risk with their enterprise security. The same attention should be applied to a cloud security

implementation. A comprehensive security approach to the enterprise cloud includes security visibility

    (logging, network-level security); innovative enterprise-grade tested and certied security components;

reputable and recognized vendors; and the option to have security managed as a service.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does your cloud provider oer enterprise-grade security appliances from vendors you rely ontoday ones that are tested and certied, and that you trust?

Can you leverage intrusion prevention systems (IPS) and enterprise-grade hardware-basedrewalls?

Do you have access to audit logs and asset-based usage reporting?

Does your cloud provider oer managed security? Encryption for virtual machine instances?

    Machine level security hardening?

    Cloud Operations and Resource Allocation

The enterprise cloud providers management portal provides a single interface through which

compute, network and storage resources can be managed. It is thereore important that the

cloud portal oers a way to organize cloud resources into logical groupings that mirror the way

an enterprises application infrastructure is architected, operated and maintained. Being able to

group inrastructure in the cloud that is used in a single application allows users to maintain a

  • 7/29/2019 NTT Cloud Evaluation Framework

    7/19

similar environment as they would in their own data center. The enterprise cloud provider

should oer a way to clearly and cleanly allocate cloud compute, storage and network resources

to specic applications. This is the most eective way to control and predict application

    perormance and cost.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does your cloud provider provide you tools to organize servers into unique manageablegroups that align with your application architecture?

Can you execute cloud operational commands across those groups?

Can you exibly allocate compute, storage and network capacity for groups of servers?

How quickly can you scale up those resources?

    Role-Based Management

The enterprise cloud portal is a vital element o an enterprise cloud strategy. The management

portal centralizes control over IT resources. Individuals within the IT organization with dierent

responsibilities need to access the portal. A role-based management system allows permissions

to align with the levels o responsibilities. Role-based management enables the systems to be

tailored to allow or restrict access to cloud resources appropriately. For example, only certain

users should have the ability to delete servers or access specic cloud resources.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does the cloud provider support cloud role-based administrative accounts so that you canassign individual permissions to users?

Can you limit control of specic cloud resources (servers, storage and networks) to specicusers?

    Elasticity and Bursting

Meeting unpredictable capacity demands is undamental to a successul cloud implementation.

These demands have two key components: elasticity and bursting.

Elasticity is the ability to add or reduce capacity on an as needed basis

Bursting is the ability to add incremental capacity or unanticipated increases in demand.

During an evaluation of an enterprise cloud provider both these elements of capacity, which

allow fexibility in handling demand, should guarantee a convenient means or expanding and

    contracting resources upon request.

  • 7/29/2019 NTT Cloud Evaluation Framework

    8/19

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does your cloud provider allow you to burst beyond your purchased cloud capacity?

Do they guarantee that burst capacity will be available to you when you need it?

Is it truly guaranteed capacity or are you relying on the cloud providers oversubscription model?

Can you reduce the resources without any penalty?

    Cloud Consulting Services

Whether you require assistance in building a cloud business strategy, cloud security risk

management plan or a methodology or on-boarding existing applications into the enterprise

cloud, your enterprise cloud provider should oer a comprehensive and sophisticated suite o

    consulting services.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does your cloud provider oer you comprehensive cloud consulting services from strategythrough implementation?

Can they help you determine the best cloud t and total solution for your businessneeds, looking at your total business objectives?

Will they help you develop a cloud security risk management plan?

    Will they calculate Return-on-Investment?

Will they help you architect cloud-aware and cloud-enabled applications?

Will they help you on-board applications into the cloud?

    Cloud Automation

One o the most interesting and powerul benets o enterprise cloud computing is the ability to

control the cloud directly rom an application (a cloud-aware application) or through IT automation

tools. This requires access to a cloud Application Programming Interface (API) that is standards-

based with an emphasis on multiple security levels such as authentication, access control and other

industry best-practices protection. Because the API is the entry point to cloud services, automating

the security of the API saves time and mitigates risks for the enterprise cloud.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does your cloud provider allow you to programmatically, via an API, control your cloud?

Do they help you enable cloud-aware applications?

What steps do they take to secure the API access to your cloud are they adequate?

    24x7 Customer Support

Services and support become an increasingly key unction in the enterprise cloud. Users are

relinquishing control o some o the physical aspects o their systems when they move them to

the cloud. Enterprise users then depend on cloud services to meet or exceed the same demands as

their internal IT services. A company may do business globally, but local accountability to resolve

issues quickly is vital to any cloud initiative. When issues arise, trained technical experts should

not stop at the implementation level. The ability to have access to senior-level engineers that can

actually x a problem means time and potentially dollars saved. Because o the importance o the

enterprise cloud to operations, a cloud provider should oer 24x7 support staed by senior-level

    engineers.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does the cloud provider give you 24x7 technical phone support staed by human beings?

Who exactly handles support and where are they located?

    What is the support model?

What level of engineers are you getting?

    Network Inrastructure

A cloud providers network infrastructure assets are fundamental to high speed, ecient cloud

application accessibility and management. An enterprise-grade global network that is continually

upgraded to oer competitive perormance levels, and incrementally expand cloud applicationsis needed. An enterprise may require cloud integration with sophisticated private networking

capabilities, such as MPLS, or a high-speed connection between data centers. A cloud providers

expertise should include the ability to optimize content delivery through the network or leverage

    enterprise-grade hardware-based load balancers.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does your cloud provider oer you world class enterprise networking capabilities including aTier 1 global IP network, high speed data center interconnection, MPLS and VPN?

Does your cloud provider oer hardware-based enterprise-grade load balancing?

Does your cloud provider oer content delivery network (CDN) services?

What type of networking options does your cloud provider oer?

    Service Level Agreement

Most cloud providers will oer you a service level agreement (SLA) including guarantees or

availability. They may oer service credits or down time. SLAs should not only guarantee

  • 7/29/2019 NTT Cloud Evaluation Framework

    10/19

network and server uptime but address latency and even support response times. Cloud providers

with condence in their solutions will provide monitoring sotware to ensure a company has

visibility and control over both the promised perormance and alignment with cost.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

What is covered in your cloud service providers SLA? Do they guarantee 100% uptime?

Does your cloud provider oer cloud performance monitoring and reporting, enabling you tounderstand the quality o the service you are getting within the cloud platorm itsel?

    Total Cost

Understanding what your true cost will be in the cloud can be dicult i a cloud provider uses a

complicated billing model that is onerous to decipher and track. Services should be clearly dened

and easily measured to ensure an accurate TCO calculation. The cost o a total enterprise cloud

solution encompasses not only the cost o compute, network, and storage, but the trade o withcapital expenditures that would provide access to an enterprise-grade inrastructure.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Is the cloud providers pricing model predictable and easy to understand?

Is it competitive when you consider all of your true costs in providing enterprise services?

Once you determine all of the gaps so that you have a fully maintainable and operationalenterprise cloud solution, what is your total cost?

    Transparency and Visibility

An inormed decision about a cloud strategy rests as much with the reputation o the provider

as it does with the cost savings associated with implementing an enterprise cloud. For example,

oering SLA monetary credits may not compensate the enterprise or the ull range o losses rom

an IT outage. Your enterprise cloud provider should give you total transparency and visibility into

how they achieve their eatures, unctions, management, operational, security, perormance and

availability claims, and should be open about their vendor relationships.

    Representative Evaluation Questions

Does the cloud provider reveal the architecture, technologies and infrastructure used within

the cloud to deliver your services? Do they provide real-time visibility into the underlying

    inrastructure?

When you pay for cloud computing capacity, are you sure you are getting what you paid for?
