At the beginning of creation all hills and mountains had wings. When they landed thousands of human and other creatures were crushed and died. Lord Indra chased the flying mountains and cut off their wings with his vajrayudha (thunderbolt weapon).

The sea god, Varuna was happy to see Hanuman using his yogic power to serve Lord Rama. The sea creatures also raised their heads above water to catch a glimpse of hanuman’s flight across the ocean in search of Sita.

Varuna wanted to help Hanuman. He went to Mount Mainaka. Mainaka was a mountain with wings hiding under the sea.

Mainaka did not wish to lose his wings. He asked Varunafor shelter.

At the same time the demons dug a tunnel from their world to the sea. They would exit and persecute the people and the creatures on earth.

Whenever Lord Indra or other celestial chased them the demons would return through the tunnel.

Lord Indra sought the help of sage Agastya. Agastyaswallowed all the seawater. Indra destroyed the exposed demons and instructed Mainaka to sit on the ocean floor blocking the tunnel exit.

RANGOLI PATTERN

People decorate their homes and temples with Rangoli patterns. They draw these designs on the ground. Then they fill the patterns with coloured rice, flowers, coloured powder or even flour.

During Divali people make these rangoli designs to welcome the goddess, Mother Lakshmi to their homes

Lakshmi Mata is the goddess of light, wealth and beauty. She is the goddess of prosperity, luck, riches, abundance and generosity.

You can also make your own colourful patterns like the ones in the pictures.

What is Divali?

Divali is the Hindu ‘festival if lights’ which celebrates the New Year.

Divali (Diwali, Deepavali) is the Festival of Lights that symbolizes the lifting of spiritual darkness.

Divali means an array of lamps (deep: lamp; vali: array) and, every year, it is celebrated by Hindus around the world with the lighting of deyas.

When is Divali?

Divali is observed on the new moon day (Amavasya, Amaavaasya) of the month of Kaartik (Kartik) in the Hindu calendar. In the English calendar it is celebrated at the between October and November.

In 1966, Divali Day was proclaimed an annual public holiday in Trinidad and Hindus all over the country celebrate the occasion with pageants and the lighting of deyas.

Varuna went to Mainaka. He said, “You must be restless sitting still for such a long time. Why don’t you fly and give Hanuman a chance to rest.”

Mainaka grew and flew in the sky. He hoped that on seeing him, Hanuman would feel relief and reston him for a while.

Hanuman flying with great concentration and speed became angry on seeing a huge mountain rising out of the sea. Hanuman increased his speed and forcefully smashed into the mountain with his chest.

Mainaka assumed a human form and said, ‘Well done Hanuman! Varuna has sent me to help you.’

Hanuman was very pleased to hear the kind offer to rest and was grateful for the friendship of the sea god.

Hanuman explained “I have to reach Lanka before sunset. I have promised to fly nonstop like Lord Rama’s arrow. Kindly bid me farewell.”

The celestials decided to test Hanuman. They sent Surasathe daughter of Daksha, a naga (snake). Suddenly, a huge monster erupted from the ocean in front of Hanuman.

The monster had a huge head with volcano-like eyes, gigantic jaws, a tongue big as a palm tree, and long sharp teeth. Hanuman felt neither fear nor anger. He understood it was only a devata (goddess) in the form of a demoness sent to test him.

Surasa said, ‘Oh Hanuman! Lord Indra offered you as my food. Lord Brahma gave me the boon, if I open my mouth anything in front itmust go inside. MY MOUTH IS OPEN, NOW ENTER.”

Hanuman prostrated, “Naga mata (snake mother) I do not refuse to become your food. However, I must first complete this assignment for Lord Rama. As soon as my task is finished, I will return and enter your mouth. This is my promise, believe me and do not obstruct me.”

Surasa reminded him that she had a boon from Lord Brahma.

Hanuman was impatient to continue. He thought quickly and said, “if you are so proud of your boon, then swallow me. But first, open your mouth wider so I can jump in.”

Hanuman increased the size of his body, bigger and bigger and Naga Mata also opened her mouth wider and wider.

The celestial who were watching praised Hanuman for showing superb power and keen intelligence.

Intent on his task. Hanuman flew towards Lanka and even the celestials were amazed at his rocket speed.

Hanuman’s huge body cast an enormous shadow on the sea below, it looked as if a big town was being carried away by flood waters!

Suddenly, Hanuman’s speed decreased, as if a strong wind were blowing against him. He felt as if he were being sucked into a typhoon, as he was also losing altitude.

Hanuman mentally made a quick calculation of his location. He realized that he was in the territory of the demoness Simhika.

Sugriva had warned Hanuman about this evil creature who lived in the sea in the form of a whale.

Whenever, a flying object crossed over the sea, Simhika would grab hold of its shadow. She would draw her victim down to the water where she would then swallow him.

Hanuman saw Simhika slowly floating on the water. Simhika was pulling Hanuman towards her. Hanuman thought, “if I fall into her mouth, my life will come to an end.”

open, and Hanuman was so close that he could see all the way down her throat, to her beating heart. Hanuman had a plan!

Instantly, Hanuman reduced his size to that of a small monkey, and with the speed of Lord Rama’s arrow , he flew down her throat and pounced on her heart.

Before Simhika could close her mouth, Hanuman exited with the same speed. Simhika, had a painful death.

Hanuman began chanting, “Sri Raama! Jaya Raama!” As he did so, his strength, courage and intellect multiplied. While continuing to fly, his size increased.

Simhika, mouth was very wide

forest and pondered his next course of action. Being a good soldier and scout he surveyed the city’s security. He was impressed. The sea was Lanka’s natural protection. A deep and wide canal surrounded the high fort walls. There were lookout posts everywhere.

Hanuman headed towards Lanka with great determination and speed to find Sita.

After some time, Hanuman saw the island of Lanka. He thought, “Being so large, I am sure to attract attention and my mission will be compromised.”

Hanuman spotted the entrance to the city – the North Gate. Hanuman became even smaller and waited until nightfall to enter the city.

As night fell, Hanuman approached the North Gate. As he was about to jump down into the city he heard a thunderous roar, “Who are you?” An aged demonessappeared like a ghost from the fort walls. She was Lankini. No one entered Lanka without her permission.

He reduced his size to an ordinary monkey. Hanuman landed in a dense

Hanuman was unruffled. He said innocently, “I have heard that your city is very beautiful so I came to visit and see it for myself. I will go inside, just have a look and come back soon.”

As Hanuman moved forward she roared, “AYE! STOP!” She gave Hanuman a blow on his head. She expected that the little monkey would be smashed to the ground. Hanuman gave her a gentle stroke to the chest. Although less than 1 foot tall, his powerful blow casued Lankini to reel in agony and confusion. She fell to the ground, her nose bleeding.

Regaining her senses, she remembered Lord Brahma’s prediction, “The city will be safe until you are defeated by a monkey. Then the city will be burnt and destroyed.”

Lankini told Hanuman, “I almost fell dead. Because you are kind, you did not strike again. You have come to locate Sita whom Ravana has kidnapped. I am defeated, I will leave this city now.”

Hanuman entered the city and was amazed at the splendor and beauty everywhere. He looked into each house searching for Sita. He saw cruelty and indecent behaviour in many houses. However, in general there was law and order in the city.

Looking at Ravana, Hanuman thought, “Regardless of his countless sins, his store of merit has not diminished. He remains unopposed . Now with the kidnapping of the chaste Sita no amount of merit will save him!”

As Hanuman completed the palace search he was very upset that he had not found Sita. “The time limit Sugrivagave has passed. What will I say to the vanara heroes. My troops will die as a result. I am unable to bear this grief. It is better that I die!”

Hanuman quickly recovered. “What are these thoughts? As long as one lives he must be Active, Enthusiastic and complete his assigned duties. One must not think about the results of one’s actions. This is the code of righteous conduct.” Hanuman gave encouragement to himself and all of humanity with these words.

“My purpose is to find Sita. Is there any place that I may have overlooked? Let me do my duty!”When he thought about his duty, the heaviness in his heart diminished.

He climbed to the top of a tall building and looked around once more. His eyes fell on an enclosed garden that was so dense with ashoka trees it appeared like a forest. There was a beautiful stream meandering through it and a majestic hall inlaid with gold. Next to the hall he saw a small white temple and his heart leaped!

Hanuman had seen human women but none fit Sri Raama’s description of Sita.

He began searching the outlying palaces. He overheard the commanders talking and memorized their names. When the guards were diverted, he leaped across the wide water canal into the palace. He saw the Puspaka Vimana (flying vehicle) and thought, “Not only has Ravana arranged extensive security, he could escape (fly) at will with this vehicle!” Hanuman admired Ravana’s foresight in battle.

Hanuman came to a spacious room. There was a huge, dark person lying on a bed surrounded by hundreds of beautiful sleeping women. Hanuman felt embarrased looking at them but examined everyone of them.

Adjacent to the bed was a sleeping woman. She was a repository of purity. “This must be Sita!” Hanuman was so happy that he kissed his tail and ran excitedly around the room.

Then he thought again, “If this lady is Sita, she would not be so happy. He looked closely and realized it was Mandodari, Ravana’s Queen. She was famous for her chastity (goodness and loyalty).
