Early definition: the nurse is a person who nourishes, look after and protect a person who is prepared to care for the sick, injured and aged.
Put the patient in the best possible condition for nature to act upon him (Nightingale, 1860)

What is nursing?...What is nursing?...The unique function of the nurse is to
assist the individual, sick or well, contributing to health or its recovery (or to a peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will, or knowledge and to do this in such way as to help to him gain independence as soon as possible (Henderson, 1966, P. 3).

knowledge grew, nurses aware of the basic principles for practice.
These principles summarized as ‘procedures’ but never tested.
Nursing borrowed its ‘science’ from other disciplines.
What was unique to nursing? – Leeds to develop nursing theories by nursing scholars.
