THE MEDICAL SCIENCE BUILDING GALLERY, home to a rotating exhibition program at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, showcases medically themed contemporary art within the unique context of the Medical Center. The art gallery was established in 2008 to exhibit the works of artists who explore the relationships between art and human biology. Artists are encouraged to interpret scientific/medical research and create works of art depicting issues of cultural, political and technological significance. The Medical Science Building Gallery's mission is to enrich its visitors' lives by enhancing their understanding of health and medicine through contemporary art. Visited by patients, family members, visitors, medical staff, administration and medical school students, The Medical Science Building Gallery sponsors between 6-8 exhibitions per year. The Medical Science Building Gallery is accepting exhibition proposals for the 201213 calendar. ELIGIBILITY The theme is open to interpretation. Individual artists, groups and curators are eligible to submit proposals. All works in 2-dimensions, 3-dimensions, installation and video will be considered; however, the physical limitation of the gallery will factor into the review and approval process. Proposals should reflect an understanding of scientific research and how the artist(s) will use medicine and science as the subject and language to create aesthetic works that are provocative and educational. THE MEDICAL SCIENCE BUILDING GALLERY SPECIFICATIONS The gallery is located on the main floor of the Medical Science Building, across from the Ehrman Medical Library and measures approximately 600 square feet. The ceiling height measures 9. The west wall measures 28 W with adjustable track lighting. The south wall includes a series of windows and is not available for 2D works. The east wall is composed of two architectural features: a glass wall measuring 8-1/2 W adjacent to a travertine half-wall 15 deep and 18 in length that can accommodate a display of sculptures and 3D objects. Adjustable track lighting runs the length of the east wall. The corridor leading to the space allows for additional hanging space and measures approximately 80 with intermittent doors and openings.
