Children: Have you ever had to walk in the dark with no light? How is that like walking by faith and not by sight? What did you have to do to keep going in the dark? Youth: Do you pray and ask for faith? How do you work on building your faith? Adults: When do you find it hardest to have faith? Must you “see” an-swered prayer, or can you peaceful-ly accept God’s will?

W hat is the position of the Catholic Church con-cerning vaccinations in general?
The Church teaches the process of de-veloping vaccines should always re-spect the human dignity of all persons, including the unborn. Avoidance of vaccination carries with it dangerous and potentially deadly consequences for the most vulnerable in society. The Catholic Church strongly supports vac-cination and regards Catholics as hav-ing a duty to be vaccinated, not only for the sake of their own health but also out of solidarity with others, especially the most vulnerable. Ezekiel said that God would tear off “a tender shoot” (17:22) for this re-planting. What does this sound like? Why, Advent, of course, and specifi-cally the words of the prophet Isaiah: “A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom” (Isaiah 11:1); and again in Isaiah’s Messianic texts we hear: “He grew up before us like a tender shoot” (53:2). Jesse was the father of the great king David and, as we know, Jesus came to be that ten-der shoot, that blossom, the new Da-vidic King whose throne, the cross, was once a tree. God’s incarnation in Jesus, born fully human, is the fulfillment of the promise to Ezekiel of the re-newed and restored cedar, the new Kingdom. That new creation and covenant exists for us in the Church, through the Holy Spirit making the seed planted within us grow, flour-ish, and spread. Thus we have the faith and courage to be that visible sign of the Kingdom bringing hope and renewal to the world. We must live Kingdom lives before we can convince others to do so.

Ezequiel dijo que Dios arrancaría “un brote tierno” (17:11) para replantarlo. ¿A qué te suena esto? Como a algo del Adviento desde luego, y específicamente a las palabras del profeta Isaías: “Saldrá un brote del tronco de Jesé, un reto-ño brotará de sus raíces” (Isaías 11:1); y una vez más en los textos mesiánicos escuchamos: “Creció ante el Señor como un retoño” (53:2). Jesé fue el padre del gran rey David y como sabemos, Jesús vino a ser ese brote tierno, ese floreci-miento, el nuevo rey davídico cuyo trono, la cruz, una vez fue un árbol.Jesús, la encarnación de Dios, nacido plena-mente humano, es el cumplimiento de la promesa de Eze-quiel del cedro renovado y restaurado, el nuevo Reino. Esa creación y alianza nuevas existen para nosotros en la Igle-sia, a través del Espíritu Santo que hace que la semilla plan-tada dentro de nosotros florezca y se extienda. Así tenemos la fe y el valor de ser ese signo visible del Reino que lleva la esperanza y la renovación al mundo. Debemos vivir vi-das del Reino antes de poder convencer a otros que lo ha-gan.

Niños: ¿Han tenido que caminar alguna vez en la oscuri-dad sin luz? ¿Cómo comparan eso con caminar guiándose por la fe y no por lo que ven? ¿Qué tuvieron que hacer para seguir caminando en la oscuridad?
Jóvenes: ¿Ustedes rezan y piden por la fe? ¿Cómo trabajan para desarrollar su fe?
Adultos: ¿Cuándo les es más difícil mantener la fe? ¿Tienen que “ver” la respuesta a sus oraciones o pueden aceptar el deseo de Dios pacíficamente?
¿ Cuál es la posición de la Iglesia Católica con respecto a las vacunas en general?
La Iglesia enseña que el proceso de desarrollo de vacunas siempre debe respetar la dignidad humana de todas las personas, incluidos los no nacidos. Evitar la vacunación conlleva consecuencias peligrosas y potencialmente mor-tales para los más vulnerables de la sociedad. FEAST OF FAITH The Preparation of the Altar The altar is the focal point of our church-es. It is a sign of Christ in our midst; indeed, it has been said that “the altar is Christ” (Dedication of an Altar, 4). The altar is a table “on which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated in mystery throughout the ages until Christ comes”; but it is also the place for a festive meal: “a table at which the Church’s children assemble to give thanks to God and receive the body and blood of Christ” (Dedication of an Altar, 4). Both these functions of the altar are clear in the rites for the preparation of the altar that follow the general intercessions, which re-mind us of the preparations we make at home for a festive meal. The deacon or altar servers come forward and, bowing, place a cloth known as a corporal (from the Latin for “body”) over the altar cloth. They place the chalice, the cup to be used in the celebration of the Eucharist, and the Sacramentary or Roman Missal, which contains the prayers of the Mass, on the altar. These reverent prepa-rations help us to focus on what is about to happen: the sharing of a holy meal, a solemn sacrifice. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
FIESTA DE LA FE El altar como la mesa familiar Después de la Liturgia de la Palabra, la asamblea y la oración litúrgica cambian de escenario. La mirada de la asamblea, así co-mo todos sus movimientos se fijan ahora en el altar. Este altar tiene forma de mesa, ¡es una mesa! En torno a ella la asamblea comerá el pan y la bebida de salvación. A él van quienes tienen hambre, quienes afectados por su natu-raleza humana, han dado paso al pecado en su propia vida y sienten la necesidad de reconci-liarse, no sólo consigo mismos, sino con sus hermanos y sobre todo, con Dios. Esta es la mesa de la unidad, de donde fluye el amor sin límites, el pan de vida. A él van quienes se sienten vacíos aun cuando lo tienen todo. En esta mesa – altar, no hay diferencia alguna, todos solidarios por la filiación divina, por la fraternidad con Cristo, por la condición hu-mana que nos une en la gracia y en el pecado nos separa. Venimos a esta mesa reafirmando lo que somos como hijos e hijas de Dios, ve-nimos a presentarnos nosotros mismos como don vivo, como ofrenda agradable, venimos a ofrecer un sacrificio de alabanza, a bendecir a Dios porque él mismo ya nos ha bendecido. ——Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. ABOUT THE KINGDOM The Gospel of Mark is nothing if not a testament to the power of parables to illustrate the Good News through story. Jesus was a master storyteller, who understood the importance of using images and concepts to which his listeners could relate. A seed, a mustard plant, would symbolize one of Mark’s signature focuses: the Kingdom of God. Centuries earlier, the prophet Ezekiel proclaimed most poetically to the Israelites, re-cently liberated from Babylonian captivity, that their God was still their hope, their comfort, their rescue, and their shelter. Those refugees would understand the image of the towering cedar as a symbol of their kingdom, cut down, fallen, captured. By restor-ing their kingdom, their God was giving them a new creation (the replanted shoot) and a new cove-nant. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
ACERCADEL REINO El Evangelio de Marcos no es más que un testimonio de la fuerza de las parábolas para ilustrar la Buena Nueva a través de una historia. Jesús era un maestro contando his-torias, que comprendía la impor-tancia de usar imágenes e ideas con los que sus oyentes pudieran relacionarse. Una semilla, una planta de mostaza, simbolizaría uno de los enfoques característicos de Marcos: el Reino de Dios.
Siglos antes, el profeta Ezequiel proclamó muy poética-mente a los israelitas, recién libe-rados del cautiverio de Babilonia, que su Dios todavía era su espe-ranza, su consuelo, su rescate y su refugio. Aquellos refugiados en-tenderían la imagen del impotente cedro como símbolo de su reino, cortado, caído, capturado. Al res-taurar su reino, su Dios les estaba dando una nueva creación (el brote replantado) y una nueva alianza.
