  • In the Caribbean region, Trinidad and Tobago has taken the lead in developing innovative pro-grammes aimed at enhancing the visitor expe-rience through the implementation of national quality standards.A major initiative in the drive to offer visitors a high quality experience is the Trinidad and Tobago Tourism Industry Certification pro-gramme, or TTTIC(pronounced tee-tick). The programme is designed to ensure that tourism operators and service providers conform to national standards of quality in all their operations. TTTIC was established to provide visitors withthe assurance of quality through a national pro-gramme of standardi-zation and certification.

These standards, which have been developed by the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) and pegged to interna-tional quality benchmarks and criteria, ensure that tour-ism operators and service providers maintain the highest standards of operation.

Developed in consultation with a wide cross sectionof stakeholders, TTTIC addresses issues such as the legal obligations of tourism operators and service providers, their responsibilities, ethics and systems of operations.

It is anticipated that national adoption of TTTICwill ultimately increase confidence in booking tourism

products in Trinidad and Tobago as visitors can be as-sured that certified tourism personnel meet all relevant legal requirements, are qualified, well trained and have effective health and safety systems in place.

The TTTIC programme is administered by the Tourism Development Company (TDC) Limited in Trinidad and the Division of Tourism and Transportation

of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) in Tobago.

The TTBS con-ducts independent third-party audits and provides certification to successful applicants. To achieve TTTIC cer-tification, the TDC and THA provide guidance on the requirements of standard and the certifi-cation process. Advisory site visits are conducted where necessary and applicants undergo an audit by the TTBS.

At present the following tourism operators and ser-vice providers can be certified: Accommodation Providers-Hotels, Guesthouses,

Bed and Breakfast and Self-Catering Facilities Tour Operators Tour Guides Tourist Land Transport Service Providers Short Term Motor Vehicle Rental Operators

Guides are recommended and there is an admission fee.

FORT KING GEORGEBuilt in the early 1700s, Fort King George is one of Tobago's best-preserved historical sites. Its approaches take you past the current hospital facilities, the prison and onto the immaculately manicured grounds where

several cannon emplacements, the barracks and officers' mess and even sculptures and more recent artifacts await your discovery. The grounds offer majestic views of the coast and are a popular venue for art displays.

STORE BAYJust over 200m long, Store Bay is one of the most popular on the island, ideal for swimming and one of the major departure points for tours to Buccoo Reef and the Nylon Pool. Several restaurants dot the surrounding area offering excellent food, none more highly recommended than the curry crab and dumplings served by the vendors in the food huts at the beach facility - a highlight of any visit.

BUCCOO REEF/NYLON POOL/NO MAN'S LANDA marine park, Buccoo is the largest coral reef in Tobago.
