ARTISTIC D IRECTOR ’S NOTE

Hello, and welcome to the 37th season of Oak Park Festival Theatre, our most am-bitious season so far! This is a first for us, our first four show season. We’ve grown from one show every summer to two, which has enabled us to bring you not only our productions of Shakespeare and Renaissance classics, but also modern classics like Of Mice and Men, Picnic, and All My Sons, and now we are moving ever forward with tonight’s production of Betrayal.

We are delighted to be able to produce two shows indoors here at The Performance Center. We will return here in the spring to present Faith Healer by Brian Friel. Then, in the summer of 2011, you will see us present The History of King Henry the Fourth and Henry V by Wm. Shakespeare, both in beautiful Austin Gar-dens Park. We hope you will subscribe to this very special year. Nothing would show your support like committing to come see all four of our shows!

This year I’m delighted to bring back two Jeff Recommended directors, Kevin Chris-topher Fox, director of tonight’s show, and Belinda Bremner directing Faith Healer.

Kevin directed Arms and the Man for us, and Belinda gave us Dancing at Lughnasa and last summer’s smash hit Of Mice and Men.

I am grateful to Lisa Gordon, our new Managing Director, Kevin Theis, our board President, and the entire Board of Directors for all their support and hard work. Without them this expanded season would have been impossible.

I am most grateful to you for continuing to support live theatre. Please consider making a donation to help us continue to grow and please, please tell your friends, relatives and neighbors to come out this year to see our shows.

Thank you,

Jack HickeyArtistic Director.

HAROLD P INTER

In 2005, Harold Pinter was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the highest honour available to any writer in the world. In announcing the award, Horace Engdahl, Chairman of the Swedish Academy, said that Pinter was an artist “who in his plays uncovers the precipice under everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression’s closed rooms. “ In 2002, Pinter was made a Companion of Honour by the Queen for services to Literature.

In 1958 Harold Pinter wrote the following:

“There are no hard distinctions between what is real and what is unreal, nor be-tween what is true and what is false. A thing is not necessarily either true or false; it can be both true and false.

“I believe that these assertions still make sense and do still apply to the explora-tion of reality through art. So as a writer I stand by them but as a citizen I cannot. As a citizen I must ask: What is true? What is false?”

Born 10 October, 1930 in East London, he was a playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist. He died 24 December, 2008.

He wrote twenty-nine plays including The Birthday Party, The Caretaker, The Homecoming, and Betrayal, twenty-one screenplays including The Servant, The Go-Between and The French Lieutenant’s Woman, and directed twenty-seven theatre productions, including James Joyce’s Exiles, David Mamet’s Oleanna, seven plays by Simon Gray and many of his own plays including his latest, Celebration, paired with his first, The Room at The Almeida Theatre, London in the spring of 2000.

He was awarded the Shakespeare Prize (Hamburg), the European Prize for Lit-erature (Vienna), the Pirandello Prize (Palermo), the David Cohen British Litera-ture Prize, the Laurence Olivier Award, the Legion d’Honneur and the Moliere D’Honneur for lifetime achievement. In 1999 he was made a Companion of Literature by the Royal Society of Literature. He received honorary degrees from eighteen universities.

Pinter’s interest in politics was a very public one. Visit www.haroldpinter.org for a link to his stirring Nobel Prize lecture, more on his political activism and his vast and prolific artistic life.
