SILENT MEDITATION

Things Hidden, Richard Rohr, p. 130

God refuses to be an object of knowledge like all other objects of knowledge. God cannot be known the way we

know a tree, a scientific fact or a book. God can only be known as a fellow subject. That’s a reciprocal knowing,

where we “know as fully as we are known” (1 Cor. 13:12). It will feel like you are being “known through”, more

than you are knowing something yourself. It will feel like a participative knowing more than an object of your

private knowing.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP

L: Let us acknowledge, Sisters and Brothers, from what matter we were made;

C: Who and what we were, when we came into the world;

L: From what grave and what darkness God who created us brought us into this world;

C: Having prepared God’s benefits for us before we were born.

L: Seeing, therefore, that we have all these things from God,

C: We ought in every respect to give thanks to God, to whom be the honor and the glory

forever.

ALL: Let us worship God! AMEN.

REFLECTION ON OUR COMMON HUMANITY

We bring to God all that is comfortable and self-satisfied in us, expecting to be blessed, even as we

believe we have been blessed. We’ve avoided the struggle, the doubt, and the searching.

But as this time of separation and even isolation goes on, we feel as though we are in the midst

of messy struggles, unwinnable struggles, all-encompassing adversity – and we feel doubt, we

feel uncertainty. We find our tasks, and our feelings, hard to deal with, and we wonder

whether we will prevail.

And so we bring to God our failings, and our fallings, and our battered faith.

Lord, be gracious, and merciful; be slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Be good to

us, as you are good to all, send your compassion over us. We feel as though you have stricken

us; now bind up our wounds.

The Lord is faithful in all the Lord’s words and deeds; the Lord upholds all who are falling, and raise

up all who are bowed down. In Jesus Christ, the Lord’s mercy and love are known.

Thanks be to God!

GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 14: 13-21

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

SERMON You Open Your Hand…

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Brief Statement of Faith

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of

God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of

Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God.

Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives,

teaching by word and by deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the

broken-hearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the

gospel. AMEN.

July 2020 DEACON MISSION

The Deacons have identified the Emergency Assistance Service (EAS) as the August

mission project. Under Delaware Health and Social Services, the Pyle Center located

in Frankford has assisted clients in Sussex County since 1975.

The emergency service is one of more than twenty services they provide.

They work in partnership with local churches and the Sussex County Ministerium to

meet emergency needs of families and individuals. Monetary donations received

from OVPC stay in Sussex County. After receiving references from counselors at the

center, this program provides resources in an effort to avoid hardships for those in

crisis situations: i.e. assistance with food, electric bills, fuel, rent, etc. When being

notified of the need, the Ministerium pays service providers directly.

We have been given an opportunity to plant a mustard seed and are grateful for

your contribution as OVPC continues to care for others in our community.

August 2nd Scriptures

Genesis 32:22-31

22 The same night he got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. 24 Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." 27 So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." 28 Then the man said, "You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed." 29 Then Jacob asked him, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.

Matthew 14:13-21

13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves." 16 Jesus said to them, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." 17 They replied, "We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish." 18 And he said, "Bring them here to me." 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
