The Ochoco Mountains are a secluded mecca for wildlife and recreation in central Oregon, featuring giant pine trees, rare trout, sparkling streams, wild-flower meadows, and epic recreational opportunities. Hiking, biking, hunting, horseback riding, fly fishing, and cross-country skiing are among the best ways to experience the Ochocos. A visit to Lookout Mountain or Mount Pisgah on a clear day, is rewarded with views stretching from Mount Shasta in California to Mount Rainier in Washington.

The Ochoco Mountains also serve as a criti-cal wildlife corridor between the Cascades and the Blue Mountains. As wolves return to the Cascades, the most likely travel corridor for them is the Ochoco Mountains. The proposed National Recreation Area would protect old-growth forests and restore fish and wild-life habitat, while allowing for restorative thinning to reduce fuels to natural levels. Off-road vehicles would be strictly limited to existing, designated roads.
