PRODUCT  PROPERTIES:  Soda  Ash  is  a moderately  strong  alkali  having  pH  11.1  in  a  0.2%  solution  in water  at  20  degree centigrade compared to Sodium Bicarbonate (Bicarb) at pH of 8.4. Soda Ash  is readily soluble  in water  in the finished form. Soda Ash is granular in appearance and is a free flowing powder. Soda Ash solutions have no appreciable corrosive effect on mild steel and cast iron. Aluminium and Galvanized steel are, however, susceptible to attack, especially at higher temperature. Light Ash and Dense Ash are chemically identical, the only difference being in their bulk densities, the later being higher. Both grades conform to Pakistan Standard Specification PS:10 of 1979. Typical analyses of Soda Ash are as follows:
