Beauty and the BeastStarring:Asia Oleson is 14, in grade 10, and music is quite a big part of her life. She is playing the role of Lefou, Gaston’s din-witted sidekick in Wawanesa School’s production of Beauty and the Beast. She also played the Hatta in Wawanesa’s previous musical, Wonderland. She enjoys Lefou because he is quite a comical character, always hovering around Gaston and inserting whatever little quips he has. She looks forward to the musical, and hopes you enjoy her portrayal of Lefou. This October, she will also be touring with Westman Youth Choir.

This is Cameron’s second year in the musical, and he will be playing the Beast! His first role was in Wonderland as Tweedle Dum. He is very random and funny just about all the time. Cameron would like to invite everyone to come and see this year’s musical, Beauty and the

Beast! Hope to see you all there!

Donovan Hamilton will be playing the part of Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. Beauty and the Beast will be his second musical in Wawanesa. He also played the part of the White Knight in Wonderland. Donovan is 14 years old, in grade 10, and loves playing sports, video games, and singing.

Emma is in her last year of high school, and this is her second musical. Emma played the Red Queen in our las t mus ica l , Wonderland. She enjoys swimming, snowboarding, and hanging around with friends. The only thing more original than her personality is her style.

Patr ick en joys v ideo games, television, and most sports. His favorite food is salad. He also likes to hang out with friends. Patrick was in Wawanesa’s Wonderland two years ago, and this year, he will be playing C o g s w o r t h i n Wa w a n e s a ’s production of Beauty and the Beast.

Cultural Awareness On Tuesday, October 4, the grade nine students from all across the school division met in Souris for a Cultural Awareness Day. The students had a very busy day and were treated to several talented aboriginal and Metis people. They began the day with a Keynote presentation by Dennis White Bird, former Treaty Commissioner for Manitoba. They were then split into three groups. Throughout the day the students listened to several presentations. Don Amaro, a Metis singer/songwriter, spoke about growing up in north Winnipeg and his path to success as a singer. We also heard two Metis women speak about the history of the Metis and traditional Metis crafts, and the Sweet Medicine Singers from Brandon, who taught us about how hand drums are created. They also treated us to some beautiful traditional hand drum music. The day wrapped up with a mini concert from Don Amaro. It was a wonderful day, and our students were excellent ambassadors for Wawanesa School! We all came back with a little more knowledge and understanding of the First Nations and Metis culture.
