Caring Neighbors, on behalf of all Sun City residents, donat-ed over $400.00 worth of books to the Foothills Elementary Library. This year, the school decided to expand to a K-8 school, leaving little in the library for the 7th and 8th graders to read. Caring Neighbors and residents worked together to get 24 of the books on their wish list. We hope to obtain the remainder by mid-September. Many thanks for our continued support!

Leslie and Greg met 18 years ago and were married 3 years later on New Years’ Day in Reno, Nevada.
Between them, they have four daughters and five grandchildren.
Greg worked in the window manufacturing and distribution business for forty years and retired in 2009. Leslie owned a computer repair and networking business.
They lived in Beaverton, Oregon and visited friends in Sun City Grand on several occasions. They fell in love with the sunny weather and found Sun City Festival while looking for a home. The desert setting and resort style living won them over.
Greg works part-time at the Copper Canyon Golf Club. He enjoys working out at Sage Center Fitness and golfing on our beautiful course.
They love Sun City Festival and all the friends they have made.Leslie and Greg Barnekoff
It’s that time of year again. Seasonal flu outbreaks are expected as the weather turns colder. Anyone, even “healthy” people can get, and spread the flu.
This year, vaccine manufacturers project 170 million doses will be available. While that does not cover the entire population, only about a third of those who should be vaccinated actually are. We should not have any problem with vaccine shortages.
So, who is at high risk for the flu and should be vaccinated? Anyone 50 years of age or older, young children, pregnant women and anyone with a chronic medical condition such as asthma or hear disease should get the flu shot! Also, unless vaccinat-ed, health care workers and caregivers of infants can infect those who are vulnerable.
Remember, flu typically starts circulating during November. The vaccine takes about two weeks to be fully effective, and is good for just one flu season.
Every year, a different strain of flu travels the globe. Thus, it’s important to get a flu shot every year.
This year, a new high-dose version of the vaccine is available for people 65 years and older. With age, the immune system weakens and does not respond as actively to the typical vaccine. Since this is the first year for the high-dose version, availability of this special dose may vary.
Last year’s flu statistics: ● About 12,000 deaths ● 60 million illnesses ● 265,000 hospitalizations
Yearly deaths from the flu can vary widely from 3,000 to as many as 49,000.
Mollen Immunization Clinics will offer the flu (and pneumonia) vaccine at Sun City Festival on Wednesday, October 20, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, in Celebration Hall at the Sage Center.
Without insurance, the fee will be $25.00 for each flu vaccination and $50.00 for each pneumo-nia vaccine payable in cash, check or credit card. Sign-up at the Member Services Desk in the Sage Center.

Horse Race/Shootout Thursday, October 7th at 5:30 pm
This event is a must if you like a good time. The closest to full contact golf you will get as your competitor’s egg you on, sometimes in your backswing. This event features two person teams who alternate their shots. High scoring teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three teams. Out of the three, we will get a Win (1st Place), Place (2nd Place), and a Show (3rd Place). Serious golfers must leave the serious at home for this event, we like to have fun. Cost: $5.00
2010 Over-Seeding ScheduleGolf Course Closes Monday, October 11th and Re-Opens on Monday, November 1st.
Why Over-Seed?
Each year we come to this time in October when we close the course for three weeks and say we are Over-Seeding. Why would we want to close the course for three weeks just as the weather is getting nice and the course is in great shape?
The reason is to provide our golfers with a better playing surface and green grass during the cool winter months. If we don’t go through the Over-Seed process, our Green Bermuda Base Turf Grass becomes Yellowish/Brown after the first frost of the year. The Bermuda grass actually goes dormant during the cooler win-ter months. For this reason, we Over-Seed with Rye Grass which is a cool season grass that is able to grow in the cool winter months.
The process starts by cutting the Bermuda grass short, called scalping, and cutting the water supply, thus forcing the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. We then seed the course with Rye Grass to germinate and turn the water back on and continue to water. Rye Grass requires constant moisture until it germinates and matures. October temperatures are ideal for this process and keeps the Bermuda grass dormant.
We hope this helps to answer the question of “Why Over-Seed?” and we appreciate your patience during this process.
