October 12th to 14th, 2018 Central Presbyterian Church Vancouver BC 127 th Synod Synod of BC Diversity within Unity presented by Mr. Delwen Stander, Barrister and Mediator Welcome once again to Synod. We look forward to gathering once again! This year we have graciously been invited to Central Presbyterian Church, Vancouver. From the history page on their website: A number of congregations of The Presbyterian Church in Canada were started in Vancouver in the 1890's, including St. Andrew's and St. John's. In 1925, these two congregations voted to become part of the new United Church of Canada. Members from both of these congregations who desired to continue in a Presbyterian tradition formed a new congregation, Central, and purchased the Congregational church building on Thurlow Street. In 1975 St. Paul's Hospital wanted to expand, and purchased the property from Central Presbyterian, and the congregation built a new facility across the street on the west side of the street. We will be gathering in the congregation’s brand new building which will see them into a new season of ministry. We thank God for this exciting development! We are EXCITED that the Mr. Roy Napier, Elder from Saanich Peninsula Presbyterian Church is our nominee for Moderator of the 127 th Synod. Roy is the moderator of the Presbytery of Vancouver Island. We look forward to Roy’s leadership!

127th Synod Synod of BC

Diversity within Unity presented by

Mr. Delwen Stander, Barrister and Mediator

Welcome once again to Synod.

Roy Napier, Elder from Saanich Peninsula Presbyterian Church is our nominee for Moderator of the 127th Synod. Roy is the moderator of the Presbytery of Vancouver Island. We look forward to Roy’s leadership!

About the topic ...

PRESENTATION 1 (Morning) – UNITY IN THE FACE OF DIVERSITY

The foundation passage from the Scriptures for this presentation is John

17:20-23, with its message that we “all may be one”. We will explore the

concept of Christian unity, in spite of, and even because of diversity. We

will investigate how we remain unified, regardless of diverse and

sometimes differing opinions and inclinations. We will review successful

systems in our universe which depend on diversity – all of which reflect

God’s masterplan, and remind us of how we too can be effective as a

team. As presenter, from the perspective of both a Christian lay person

and a lawyer, I will also touch on historical examples of unity which was

and is maintained within an atmosphere of diversity. Finally, we will look

carefully at the concept of being “perfect in one”. There will be a short

question and answer period at the end of the presentation.

PRESENTATION 2 (Afternoon) – CHRISTIAN DISPUTE RESOLUTION

or PEACE-MAKING

This will be a presentation which looks at the Christian peace-making

model suggested by Ken Sande in his book, “The Peacemaker”, and how I

use the model in the Christian peace-making portion of my mediation

practice. I will discuss the four basic steps of the peace-making process,

and how this God-centered approach differs from the Western

legal/rights-based mediation process. We will look at different uses of this

peace-making model to resolve disputes involving Christians involved in

legal issues or other instances where a Pauline relationship has broken

down. We will then do a mock Christian peace-making session, with

participants from the conference, to see how it actually works. After it is

concluded, we will have a concluding question and answer period.
