St. Albert the Great Saint of the day for November 15

Albert the Great was a 13th-century German Dominican who decisively influenced the Church’s stance toward Aristotelian philosophy brought to Europe by the spread of Islam. Students of philosophy know him as the master of Thomas Aquinas. Albert’s attempt to understand Aristotle’s writings established the climate in which Thomas Aquinas developed his synthesis of Greek wisdom and Christian theology. But Albert deserves recognition on his own merits as a curious, honest, and diligent scholar. He was the eldest son of a powerful and wealthy German lord of military rank. He was educated in the liberal arts. Despite fierce family opposition, he entered the Dominican novitiate. His boundless interests prompted him to write a compendium of all knowledge: natural science, logic, rhetoric, mathematics, astronomy, ethics, economics, politics, and metaphysics. His explanation of learning took 20 years to complete. “Our intention,” he said, “is to make all the aforesaid parts of knowledge intelligible to the Latins.” He achieved his goal while serving as an educator at Paris and Cologne, as Dominican provincial, and even as bishop of Regensburg for a short time. He defended the mendicant orders and preached the Crusade in Germany and Bohemia. Albert, a Doctor of the Church, is the patron of scientists and philosophers. Reflection: An information glut faces us Chr istians today in all branches of learning. One needs only to read current Catholic periodicals to experience the varied reactions to the findings of the social sciences, for example, in regard to Christian institutions, Christian life-styles, and Christian theology. Ultimately, in canonizing Albert, the Church seems to point to his openness to truth, wherever it may be found, as his claim to holiness. His characteristic curiosity prompted Albert to mine deeply for wisdom within a philosophy his Church warmed to with great difficulty. News From The Streets… She’s No Longer Here

By Mary Martha Primerano I’ve written about Diane before. The last time we ran across her, she was at her usual spot — right at the front doorstep of a downtown bookstore. The bookstore owners were ok with the elderly homeless woman sleeping there. She was no threat to anyone. One of Diane’s last statements to us was, “well by this time next Monday, you will no longer see me here. A spot in public housing has opened up for me”, hon-estly I was delighted to hear this. And true to form the next time Walt was out ministering on the streets she was gone. A few homeless friends of hers shared with him that Diane is now off the streets, and in an apartment on the other side of town. I was so thankful to hear this news because earlier this year while visiting her during the cold months we could see that she was battling a terrible cough and some flu like symptoms. The fact that she is now off the streets is truly a miracle. In the past two decades of ministering on the streets we’ve seen chronic homelessness first hand, and to put it lightly it ain't pretty! People are literally dying out there. So there is an urgency to remind them that God loves them and has not forgotten them. We do this by giving them a bag of groceries, warm clean clothing and toiletries, and praying with them. I’m not saying that all that live on the streets are harmless, but I have discovered that God has his people in all walks of life, and yes even in the homeless population that do acknowledge Jesus as their Lord and Savior. So what are we going to do about this? Well I like what the Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 1:5, “The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.” Let’s love and reach out to others who could not possibly pay us in return. Like one of my favorite ministers of the gos-pel (my husband, Walt) says, “I know we can’t do everything but we can do something.”

Marcos 12, 38-44. La fe alarga la mirada.- Las dos viu-

das que aparecen en las lecturas de hoy tienen en común

algo más que su viudez. En ambas brillan la generosidad, la

capacidad de arriesgar algo en el nombre de Dios, y el po-

der ver más allá de lo que alcanzan nuestros ojos. La fe

alarga la mirada, porque la mirada del cuerpo llega única-

mente hasta decir: "Se está acabando la harina" ó "Sólo me

queda este par de monedas." La fe en cambio ve que el

Dueño de la harina es también mi Dueño, y que el Dios de

toda riqueza es el que recibe mis limosnas. La falta de ge-

nerosidad es en realidad una forma de miopía espiritual, y

sólo puede ser corregida cuando los ojos son operados para

que puedan ver no sólo la harina que se va sino las bendi-

ciones que llegan. Típicamente, una persona que sufre mio-

pía en sus ojos del cuerpo, como por ejemplo es mi caso

personal, puede ver bien lo que tiene en sus propias manos;

le cuesta más en cambio discernir lo que está a unos pocos

pasos, aunque incluso esté cerca. Lo mismo sucede aquí:

Dios está cerca, sus bendiciones están próximas, pero la

miopía de nuestras almas sólo siente seguro lo que puede

controlar, o sea lo que tiene en el poder de sus manos.

Darlo todo.- Jesús había llegado casi al final de su mi-

sión en esta tierra cuando sucedió la escena de la viuda y el

templo. Creo que es importante que descubramos un parale-

lo que se da ahí. La ofrenda de la viuda no es sólo muy ge-

nerosa; es "todo lo que ella tenía para vivir." No sólo dio

mucho; lo dio todo. Darlo todo es también el rasgo dstinti-

vo del amor de Cristo que precisamente habló de "dar la

vida por los amigos," como señal del amor verdadero. Jesús

es extremista en su modo de amar, y ello viene como medi-

cina a este mundo en que tantos son extremistas en su ma-

nera de odiar. A la locura de tantos seres humanos que en-

tregan sus vidas sobre el altar del odio Cristo quiso oponer

la locura de un amor que es capaz de entregar la propia vida

para dar vida.

Pobreza y generosidad.- Las dos viudas de las lecturas

de hoy eran personas con necesidad. Tenían poco pero fue-

ron capaces de dar mucho: ¿no es irónico? Es una ironía

feliz que ayuda a contrarrestar la otra ironía, la que es triste:

a menudo el que más puede dar es el que menos colabora.

Alguien dijo: "¿Y es que esperabas otra cosa? Si son ricos

es porque no han compartido; ¿por qué habrían de empezar

ahora?" El punto último entonces es: ¿tenemos nuestras

cosas o son ellas las que nos tienen a nosotros? Parece que

si uno no puede disponer de sus bienes es porque en reali-

dad no los posee. En ese sentido parece más dueño de sí el
