Ella Park Lawrence and the Flag of Illinois

This month, I would like to write a little about Ella Park Lawrence. Mrs. Lawrence and her husband George built the stone house and carriage house on the corner of Prairie & Losey Streets in Galesburg. George was an attorney. He also managed a vast acreage of farm land inherited by Mrs. Lawrence.

For those of you who visit the website of the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association, Sandburg.org, you will find wonderful articles by Barbara Schock. According to Mike Hobbs, a director on the Association board, Barbara and her husband Christian moved to Galesburg from Elgin years ago. They have both served on the Association board. Barbara researches and writes segments for the website under the title of “Sandburg’s Home Town.”

According to Mrs. Schock’s article from September 15, “Carl Sandburg wrote about the family who lived at 590 North Prairie Street in his autobiography, Always the Young Strangers. He delivered the Galesburg newspaper there and had watched the very large sandstone house as it was being erected in the early 1890s. He had heard the house cost $80,000 (equal to more than $2 million in today’s money), the most expensive house in Galesburg up to that time.”

Her article continues with an account of Mrs. Lawrence’s role in the National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Lawrence had

several descendants serve in the American Revolution. Mrs. Lawrence was very patriotic. So much so that she noticed how Illinois did not have a flag.

According to netstate.com, “(Mrs. Lawrence) found that Illinois had no official State flag and, in 1912, she began a vigorous campaign to adopt a design for an official State banner for the State of Illinois.” She established a $25.00 prize for the winning design and toured the state chapters of the DAR to campaign for the contest. 35 designs were submitted between 1913 and 1914.Eventually, the design by Miss Lucy Derwent of the Rockford Chapter was chosen. “Miss Derwent’s design featured the pictorial content of the 1868 Great Seal of the State of Illinois on a white field“(netstates.com). In 1969, “Illinois” was added to the flag. A prototype of the original flag, sans Illinois, is on display at the Knox County Museum in Knoxville.

Sandburg Biographer Penelope Niven Dies

Acclaimed author and Sandburg Biographer, Penelope Niven, passed away on August 28, 2014 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She was present in Galesburg for the Carl Sandburg Days celebration this year. She spoke at the reception for the Sandburg statue after it arrived as a kick off to this year’s “festival of the mind.” Martha Downey, Site Superintendent for the Sandburg State Historic Site and Bishop Hill, has written a wonderful article about Ms. Niven in the fall

addition of Inklings and Idlings, the newsletter for the Sandburg Site Association. This article is very much worth your attention. It can be found at Sandburg.org. Printed versions are available in the gift shop at the Sandburg Birthplace.

IIRA's Business Succession and Transition Planning Workshop Set for Oct. 21

The Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs (IIRA) at Western Illinois University is hosting the workshop "Business Succession and Transition Planning" Tuesday, Oct. 21 in collaboration with the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce and Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Donaldson Community Center, located at 250 South Avenue D, Canton, IL. The workshop is open free to businesses statewide (registration required), as well as to businesses in neighboring states.

According to Jolene Willis, associate manager of IIRA's Illinois Cooperative Development Center, the workshop will be conducted by Steve Barnhart, a technical specialist from the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC). His presentation will address succession and transition-planning issues encountered by all types of family and closely held businesses, regardless of whether they are in the manufacturing sector. With more than 25 years of organizational development and operations leadership experience, Barnhart provides training and business improvement services to Illinois companies, drawing upon IMEC's state and national resources to help companies increase productivity and remain

competitive.

"Business owners are encouraged to attend and learn more about the components of a company transition as it relates to business planning for the future," Willis explained.

Willis said experts will also be available to address questions about one particular option for business succession.

"We will highlight the option of forming a cooperative as a business succession strategy," she added. "In some situations, a cooperative is an effective way of mobilizing community members to support a transitional business' future."

According to Canton Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amanda Atchley, the chamber and the Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development actively work towards providing resources and assistance for retaining and expanding existing businesses.

"We strive to implement professional development opportunities for our members that are designed to strengthen and grow current businesses within the community," Atchley said.

"Fostering downtown business growth and development is one of Canton Main Street's objectives," noted Cheryl Bielema, president of the Canton Main Street Executive

Board. "Some of our downtown businesses have been operating for many years, and we want to promote any effort that will help to ensure those businesses can remain open."

Missy Towery, executive director of Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development, noted that sponsoring this workshop fits well with the organization's mission, which is "to serve as a catalyst for economic and community development by capitalizing on community partnerships, business development opportunities and implementation of programs and projects that foster growth and development."

The workshop is open free to the public, but registration is required. To make a reservation, contact Atchley or Towery by Friday, Oct. 17 at (309) 647-2677, or via email at [email protected] or [email protected].

This workshop is sponsored by the Illinois Cooperative Development Center and MAPPING the Future of Your Community programs at the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at WIU, along with USDA Rural Development and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
