Ode to an Anzac The adventure, the pride, the glory, the sacrifices, A brave hero, supporting your mates and your nation. Scrambling up the rugged, hilly cliffs of Gallipoli, Surviving, with nothing but your bayonet and pack. Brief moments spent on ANZAC Cove, Long, fearful months in the muddy trenches. The darkness, the dampness, the mist and the stench, Smothering, stifling, suffocating. The Turks greeted you, With a shower of cold piercing bullets, And the BOOM, BANG, BOOM of the thundering cannons, Obliterating the battlefields like a ravaging tsunami. Stumbling to the ground clutching your chest, With your heart screaming for your loved ones. Your flame flickered for the final time, Your body broken but your spirit is a soaring eagle. Another shallow grave was dug, Now sleeping in a lonely soldier’s tomb. Far from your homeland of the wattle and your loved ones. Your memory is like a midnight star; forever shining. As the flag flails at half mast, Solemness and silence reigns. The trumpet wails the Last Post, As the final note melts into the rising dawn.
