Dear Fall 2014 Incoming International Students, Exchange Students and Sponsored Students, Here are some housing search resources to assist you with your off-campus housing search if you have not secured on campus housing for Fall 2014. Remember, any searches for off- campus housing must be self-directed. Also, once you find housing it takes a few days to complete the required paperwork and sign a lease. As a reminder, we do not recommend setting up your housing without first seeing the housing in person. One of the attached documents is a list of hotel options for temporary lodging while you are doing your housing search. The rates listed on the page may have changed, please call the hotel you choose to find out the current room rate. Also, you might consider booking your hotel earlier rather than later, as some hotels may be filled up in August for other events. Some examples of hotels to consider are: Vagabond Inn Embassy Suites Ramada Limited Radisson Hotel Also, some hotels and motels offer a discount for SJSU students. Here are some housing search resources to assist you with your off-campus housing search if you have not secured on campus housing for Fall 2014. Remember, any searches for off-campus housing must be self-directed.

Similar to Air B&B, Couch Surfing can be useful for temporary housing.

Irvine Company Furnished Apartments (ICFA)

Another off-campus housing choice that you could consider is the Irvine Company which provides fully furnished apartments that you can rent with a group of roommates. Students must form complete roommate groups of four roommates per unit before applying for housing at the Irvine Company Furnished Apartments. SJSU International Students Housing Search Facebook Group

The SJSU International Students Housing Search Facebook Group was created to connect incoming international students with each other and to share housing resources and advice for your housing search. Incoming international, exchange and sponsored students must first fill out this Google form at http://bit.ly/1coc98w in order to be added to the group. If you are not able to view Facebook or Google, you can fill out this alternate survey form at http://svy.mk/19jHLYA to receive housing resources via email.

Shuttle Service from the airport We recommend reserving your shuttle from the airport online before you arrive in the US.

Contact SuperShuttle for an airport pick-up service. You can choose between a van where passengers share the ride with others going in their direction or a private car which takes you directly to your destination. Advanced reservations are required. Book your airport shuttle now! Use the special SJSU Super Shuttle link (http://bit.ly/1kaBGZT) to receive a 10% discount when booked online.

Public Transportation

Here are links to Caltrain and Lightrail information for getting around San Jose during your housing search if you do not have a car. Remember to check the map for where the Caltrain and Lightrail stop and plan to ride a bus or taxi to your final destination if needed. You will have to pay the fee before you board the Caltrain, Lightrail or Bus. If you ride a taxi, you must pay the fee after the ride has been completed and the cost calculated for the distance traveled. Caltrain Information: http://www.caltrain.com/ Lightrail and Bus Information: http://www.vta.org/ More information about public transportation in the area can be found at SJSU Transportation Solutions at http://bit.ly/oMMDgn SJSU I-Gateways also has a good tutorial about how to rent a car at http://bit.ly/1blvlV9 if you are interested and eligible to rent a car. For most car rental companies, the renter must be at least 25 years of age and hold a valid and current driver’s license. This includes a California driver’s license, a license from your home country (must be written out in the Latin alphabet), or an International Driver’s Permit (International Driver License).

SJSU Transportation Solutions

SJSU Transportation Solutions is available to answer questions about public transportation in the area around SJSU. Please see their website for information about public transportation options and to access transit maps: http://as.sjsu.edu/asts/ .

You can also visit their offices in person in the Student Union Building on campus to ask questions. Once you have your SJSU Tower Card (Student ID Card) you can purchase an Associated Students Ecopass sticker that will allow you unlimited free rides on all Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Buses and Light Rail for the duration of the Eco Pass sticker. We’ve heard from a few cultural clubs on campus in regards to answering off campus housing questions for incoming international students. Please feel free to send an email and make sure to introduce yourself first before asking your off campus housing question!

Akbayan Pilipino-American Organization

Filipino incoming students with off campus housing search questions can email Akbayan Pilipino-American Organization president at [email protected].

Chinese Student Fellowship:

The Chinese Student Fellowship (CSF) is glad to help SJSU incoming Chinese students and can provide:

1. House sharing information to help new incoming Chinese students to rent housing.

2. Free airport pick-up for incoming Chinese students. (Both SFO and SJA)

3. A Chinese student welcome party around September, to help them adapt to new environment.

Le Cercle Francais

The SJSU student organization Le Cercle Francais is available to provide off campus housing search advice for French speaking incoming international students. You can email the club’s main email address at [email protected]. You can also join their Facebook group "Cercle Francais, SJSU French Club". Circulo Hispanico

Circulo Hispanico can answer off campus housing search questions for incoming students from Spanish speaking countries. Please address your questions to [email protected]. Hmong Student Cultural Enrichment Association

The Hmong Student Cultural Enrichment Association can answer off campus housing search questions for incoming Hmong students. Their Facebook can be found at http://on.fb.me/1t4HUNo . Also, Mindy Yang, the Hmong Student Cultural Enrichment Association Treasurer can answer off campus housing search questions for Hmong students at [email protected]

Indian Student Association

Dr. Sharvari Dixit, Ph.D at [email protected] from the Indian Student Association can answer off campus housing search questions for incoming international students from India.

Japanese Student Association Students from the Japanese Student Association are available to answer off campus housing search questions from incoming Japanese students about the housing search. You can email the Japanese Student Association's email [email protected] in either Japanese or English.

Saudi Students in San Jose Facebook Group

Saudi students as well as all students who speak the Arabic language are invited to join the “Saudi Students in San Jose” Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/331679233564484/) and are invited to ask their off campus housing search questions in the group.

Taiwanese Student Association

The Taiwanese Student Association is available to answer off campus housing search questions for incoming Taiwanese students. Please go to the Taiwanese Student Association Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/sjsutsa/.
