The 1978 A nnua l C onven tion , held August 16- 19 in the city o f C a n b er ra , A us tra l ian C apito l Terr i to ry , was o u r 49th bu t the first one to be held outside the N o r th A m erican C on t inen t . As you have u n d o u b ted ly heard , it was a beautifully run an d tho ro u g h ly enjoyable four-day C onven tion . The Regis tra t ion Fee paid for lunch a n d d in n er for all fou r days! O u r hotel was the lovely Lakeside with the to w n o f C a n b e r ra and su r ro u n d in g areas p r o v i d i n g u n l i m i t e d o p p o r t u n i t i e s f o r s i g h t s e e i n g . L a y n e Glanville-W illiams, G o v e rn o r o f the Austra l ian Section o f The Ninety-Nines, also assum ed the t rem en d o u s responsibili ty of C o n v en t io n C h a irm an . Their Section has forty-nine m em bers living in an a rea the size o f the United States. Needless to say, the l io n ’s sha re o f the p re-conven tion w ork fell u p o n the shoulders o f the handfu l o f Ninety-N ines w ho also live in and a ro u n d Sydney. The A us tra l ian Ninety-N ines heaped praise upo n Layne as their o rgan izer -w ithou t-peer and gu id ing light. A udrey Williams was also highly c o m m e n d ed by the C o m m it tee m em bers since she was responsible for keeping records o n registra tions, paym ents , tickets, etc. O u r hear ty “ T h a n k Y o u ” to all w h o worked so ha rd to give us an enjoyable, u n ique and highly-successful C onvention .

T h e tw o B o a rd M e m b e rs e lected by the de le g a te s were incu m b en t C harlene Fa lk en b e rg and Barbara Goetz w ho is also the In te rna t iona l Safety E duca tion C ha irm an . We welcome them with en thusiasm .

A lthough the results o f the vo ting on the proposed am en d m en ts to the Bylaws will be exp la ined to you by y our Delegates at the fo r th co m in g C h a p te r and Section Meetings a n d will ap p e a r in the new Roster , I w ould like to m en t ion som e significant am endm en ts . Article VI, Section I was changed. It will now take seven wom en pilots to form a new C h ap te r , however, as before, when a C h ap te r d ro p s below five m em bers it will be declared inactive. Article VII, a n a d d it io n to Section I gave the M em bers-a t-Large delegate votes a t the A nnua l Meetings. T here was considerab le discussion on Article III, Section 3, D u e s— b ut the m otion was tabled. The p roposa l being voted on was to permit all m em bers o f the Ninety- Nines residing outside the U.S. to pay half dues but still con tinue to receive all mailings, the 99 N E W S and the M em bersh ip Directory. After the m otion was tabled , Lois asked me, as incom ing President, to a p p o in t an ad hoc com m ittee to s tudy and consider the issue which has com e up annually fo r m any years. The m em bers o f the com m ittee have no t yet been selected.

The great m ajor i ty o f us were o n tou rs which to o k us to various countr ies bo th p r io r to a n d af te r C onvention . T he to u r I was on visited New Z ea land where we also received unbelievably warm and en thusiast ic welcomes in the cities we visited, then Austra lia and finally the Fiji Islands. We crossed paths with several o ther to u r g roups in A uck land . M elbourne , Sydney and o f course, we all cam e toge the r in C an b e r ra for the C orroboree . Each one o f us happily an d noisily p roc la im ed the to u r we were on to be the best, bu t we had little t ime for conversa t ion as there was so m uch to see th a t we might never have an o p p o r tu n i ty to see (and p h o to g rap h ) again. T o d ay as I write, m an y 99s still have not re turned as they went on to visit ad d it iona l far aw ay places.

New HorizonsNatasha Swigard

Phoenix Chapter 99 Natasha Swigardreceived her clearance to New Horizons from the C ontro lle r she t rus ted , on T h u rs ­day, August 3, 1978. Her d e p a r tu re was earlier than planned because o f cancer.

N a tash a ’s valiant spirit t h ro u g h o u t the three years o f her illness p ro m o te d b o n d s o f fr iendship and caring in the m em bersh ip of the Phoenix Chapter tha t will rem ain as a fitting m em oria l to her. Her interest in the activities o f the C h a p te r and its m em bers never faltered. The m any 99s w ho visited her often both at hom e and in the hospital were always m ade to feel tha t they were her favorite visitors.

N atasha was a winner! First , there was her victory in a tta in ing renewal o f her medical certif icate—not on w aivers—after a round o f s u r g e r y a n d t h e r a p y h a d v i r t u a l l y destroyed the vision in her r ight eye. The next thing we knew, she piloted her Cessna 182 to first place in the 1976 Kachina Doll Air Rally . N ever was a w in n e r o f the m a g n i f i c e n t G o l d w a t e r T r o p h y m o r e sincerely app lau d ed by her com pet ito rs! Her 49'/$er, Cliff, and their five children were in the cheering section.

Together, N atasha and Cliff used their plane as t ranspor t f rom the arid desert to the blue Pac if ic a t S a n D iego w h e re they pursued their second love, yachting.

N a tash a was in s t rum en t- ra ted , an d had been a 99 s ince N o v e m b e r 1972. She served the c h ap te r as repo rte r fo r the Ninety- Nine News, ed i to r o f C loud 99, public re la­t ions ch a i rm a n and c h ap te r p h o to g rap h e r , a n d sh e p a r t i c i p a t e d in m a n y s e rv ic e activities. She had tau g h t school, was a p r o f e s s i o n a l p h o t o g r a p h e r , a t a l e n t e d pa in te r a n d a super person.

Nell Behr

Nell Foster Behr, early-day pilot, died August 16, 1978 at Seattle, W ash ing ton d u r in g open heart surgery. She served as G o v e rn o r o f the S ou theas t Section un d e r Amelia E arha r t and was also a life m em ber o f the O X 5 Aviation Pioneers. She was also a m em ber o f the Pacific N orthw est Aviation Historical Fou n d a t io n .

Fred Rueckert

F red R ueckert , long time friend o f all 99s, active s u p p o r te r o f Bay Cities 99s and Ruth's 49 '/4er, lo s t h is p r o l o n g e d b a t t l e w i th leukem ia on Sep tem ber 8, 1978. There were m an y times over the years when defeat seemed inevitable but then a C hr is tm as par ty , picnic o r whatever, and there was Fred look ing the p icture o f heal th and behaving in his usual ja u n ty m anner . He will be missed but never forgotten .

C ap ta in David How ard

Capt. David H ow ard , hu sb an d o f Aloha Chapter m em ber Marijane Nelson H oward,was lost a t sea as the result o f the crash o f a seaplane he was piloting. The accident, which occurred under adverse condit ions on the open sea, also cla imed the life o f his co ­pilot, fo rm er M arine Lt. C olonel T h o m as M ooney. C apt. H ow ard was a well-known m em ber o f the avia tion c o m m u n i ty and an employee o f the Antilles Air Boats C o m ­pany, Virgin Islands, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

R odney Billings

We a re sad to report the dea th o f Far West C hapter P re s id e n t Vi N ix o n ’s h u s b a n d , R odney , on Ju ly 10, 1978 when his aircraft crashed near Billings, M o n ta n a d u r in g a record flight a t tem pt to set a closed course record fo r light planes. This was the same plane he used in O c tober , 1976, a 1950 Cessna 170 A, to set a stra ight-line record for light planes. He received the Louis Bleriot M e d a l f o r 1976 f r o m t h e C o u n c i l o f Federa t ion A eronau t ique In terna tiona le in R om e, Italy, and was aw arded the first “ Pilot o f the Year” aw ard from the Puget S o u n d P i lo t ’s Associa tion. «y

Safety Education

P S M P — Oh So M i s u n d e r s t o o d .............Boy, is my face red! Everyone keeps asking me what P S M P means. Is it w or th so m e ­thing or is it just more ja rg o n in the mystical a lp h a b e t s o u p o f p i lo ts . I a p o lo g iz e , I assumed everyone was famil ia r with the p rogram since i ts’ inception in the M arch ‘76 99 News.

P S M P is the Pilot Safety M ain tenance Program for safety e duca tion for the In ter­national 99s. So what is it and w ha t does it do? P S M P is your personal c o m m itm e n t to safety. The program requires you. as a pilot, to maintain your proficiency on a regular basis. As an example, the p ro g ram reauires you to do 5 each, short field - soft field takeoffs and landings every 3 m onths . This is then entered in your log book and verified by a CFI.

A n o th e r exam ple, every 6 m on ths , you are required to review your O w n er ’s M anua l and O perat ing L imita tions and en ter tha t also in your log book. In all, there are 32 items to be accomplished in a period o f one year, logged in your log boo k and verified by

a C F I . It is no t necessary fo r a C F I to ride with you at any time. Any new rating au to m a tica l ly qualifies you for the Pilot Safety M ain tenance P rogram . You may o b ta in the form for this p ro g ram from either y o u r Section Safety E duca tion C h a i rm a n or myself.

Now, let’s take a look at last y e a r ’s year end report and the results o f the over 50% of the chap ters tha t participated . W h at is most obvious, is th a t any c h ap te r th a t par tic i­pa ted in the P ilot S a fe ty M a in te n a n c e Pro g ra m scored very high in the s tandings.

Par t ic ipa t ion in the P S M P was rewarded with bonus points as an incentive fo r you to pa r tic ipa te in this p rogram ; however, I do not believe tha t this gives a t rue p icture o f a c h a p t e r ’s a c tu a l p a r t i c ip a t io n in safe ty p a r t i c ip a t io n . T h e re fo re , n ex t year , the points fo r the Pilot Safety M ain tenance Pro g ra m will be c h ap te r weighted, th a t is, divided by the n u m b er o f persons in the chap ter . Also, the fo rm will be revised to include m ore safety e duca tion program s. T h e p o in t v a lu e o f e ac h i tem will be

reevaluated and be based on a degree of ch ap te r par tic ipa tion and the length o f the p rogram . M any good and interesting ideas have com e from the reports you have turned in. As an exam ple , m an y chap ters are using th e i r c h a p t e r ne w s le t te r fo r th e i r sa fe ty educa tion p rogram ra the r than tak ing up valuable chap te r meeting time. Also, many chapters are including safety educa tion as an integral par t o f each fly-in. One message I received loud and clear f rom the reports that were re turned was th a t m any chap ters and sections d o not wish to com pe te for points fo r var ious reasons. However, because we are an educa tiona l, scientific, and chari table o rgan iza t ion , the c o rp o ra t io n must justify these kinds o f activities in som e way; the safety e duca tion report is a way o f doing this. Therefore , on next year ’s year end report fo rm there will be a place for you to indicate w he ther or no t you wish to have y our report entered in to the com petit ion for the trophies . W hether o r not you com pete is a decision tha t is up to each individual c h ap te r o r section. *»

Aviation Law

A nyone w h o has d o n e m uch “sh o p p in g ” for insurance policies is aw are o f the m any com pan ies w ho put “e xc lus ionary” clauses in those policies. If there was any d o u b t as to their validity, a 1976 M ichigan case clarified the po in t as to m any such clauses.

R obert J. Kinnavy, a c o rp o ra te executive in Chicago, was insured u n d e r a g ro u p accident policy in the a m o u n t o f $50,000 for a c c id e n ta l d e a th . Mr. K in n a v y lived in Benton H arbor , M ichigan a n d c o m m u ted to work each day in his pe rsonally-owned Piper Cherokee. His wife d ro v e h im to the a irp o r t in Benton H arb o r , a n d he kep t a car a t Sky H a rb o r a irp o r t in Chicago.

On N ovem ber 13, 1969, Mr. K innavy took his usual flight to work , left the office a ro u n d 4:30 p.m. and was never seen alive again. O n D ecem ber 6, 1969, his body washed up on a Lake M ichigan beach. The m ed ica l e x a m in e r s d e te r m in e d th a t his dea th was caused by external-v io lent m eans, a n d t h a t his in ju r ies were o f th e type frequently found in a irc raf t fatalities.

No one actually saw his p lane t ak e off, but it was noted tha t between 5:30 a n d 6:30 p.m. on th a t evening his car was pa rked at the Sky H a rb o r a irp o r t a n d his plane was gone. Further , the National W ea ther Service had received a request for w eather in fo rm a t ion f rom a person on the g round w ho identified himself as the pilot o f K innavy’s C herokee.

The cour t d isagreed, saying there was no a m b ig u i ty in the m e a n in g o f the w o rd “passenger” when read in con tex t with the entire exclusionary clause. If an o p e ra to r o f a private a ircraft is a “passenger” there would be no need for a n exception to the e x c l u s i o n a r y c la u s e . I f t h e p l a i n t i f f ’s i n t e r p r e t a t i o n w as u s e d , t h e l a n g u a g e “except while a passenger in an a irc ra f t” could have been replaced by the single word

“n o t”, caus ing the exclus ionary clause to read “while engaged in o r tak ing part in aeronau tic s a n d / o r av ia t ion o f any descrip­t ion o r resulting from being in any aircraft not previously tried, tested an d a p p ro v e d ”.

H aving m ade this dis t inct ion based on the actual w ord ing o f the clause in the policy itself, the cour t then went on to spend some t im e discussing w hat the "o rd in a ry and p o p u la r m ean in g ” o f the language in the c l a u s e a n d t h e w o r d “ p a s s e n g e r " in pa r t icu la r would be, conclud ing th a t the o r d i n a r y m a n w o u ld t e n d to d r a w a d is t inc t ion between pilots w ho ope ra te and persons w ho are carried in airplanes.

O n e o f t h e ju s t ic e s , in a c o n c u r r in g o p in io n , ba sed his d ec is io n on slightly d ifferent g rounds , a t tem pting to explain a w a y th e g e n e r a l ru le t h a t i n s u r a n c e c o n trac ts a re to be strict ly c onstrued against the insurer if there is any ambiguity . He q u o ted the Legislative a u th o r i ty in Illinois which gave insurers the right to m ake certain l im ita t ions in their life insurance policies, and indicated that the pa r ticu la r lim itation in this policy was well within th a t provision o f th e law.

W hen you th ink o f a forest, you m ore than l ik e ly v i s u a l i z e l a r g e , f u l l - l e a f e d t r e e s growing high and close together. T hink , then , if you will, a b o u t a young, very young, fo res t—o u r own In terna t iona l Forest o f Fr iendship. The trees a re a b o u t seven feet high, shy o f girth and spaced wide apart .

There was a p a rad e on Sa tu rd ay , Ju ly 22 m ark ing the beginning o f the reded ica t ion ce re m o n ie s . T h e A tc h is o n sc h o o l b a n d provided the music a n d the Boy an d Girl Scouts o f America carried the flags o f each state , terr i to ry a n d c o u n try represen ted by 99s. The C o lo r G u a rd was o f the U.S. Navy Each flag was placed in its s tand next to the tree it sy m b o l iz e d . It is a n im p ress iv e display. Dignitaries were in a t tendance from all over the country . Pa r t icu lar ly no tab le was the large, enthusiastic con tingen t f rom California! The children o f A tch ison have been co n tr ibu t ing to the Forest since its beginning, and co n tin u e to pa r tic ipa te in its m ain tenance and g ro w th as they grow.

It is a 99 Project, and we have developed M em ory Lane as a most interesting walk displaying the names o f those w ho have been hon o red by friends o r family o r c o r p o ra ­tions o r 99s as p ro m o te rs a n d c o n tr ib u to rs to Genera l Aviation. W hat a wonderfu l tribute!

The terra in of the A tch ison area is just lovely. Its rolling hills clarify its beautiful crystal a tm osphere , a peculiarity a p p rec i ­ated and especially noted by one w ho is accustom ed to hazy sm og and lives where 5- miles visability is considered a good day. It has been a wet su m m er in A tch ison and the hills were a deep, luxurious green.

This was my first visit to the Forest site. I was on hand for the 1973 F ly-A w ay when we carried little token P o n d e ro sa pines to the sta te capitals and exchanged th em for t iny state trees. It has been proven th a t the trees must be sta rted and n u r tu red in the climate in which they will grow in o rd e r to prosper. T ran sp lan ted trees jus t could not survive. Kansas S ta te University, Fores try E x te n ­sion Service, represented by J a m es Geisler and Jam es N ighsw onger have used their expertise to good advantage . 1 arrived in Atchison the m o rn in g o f Ju ly 22 to be w arm ly greeted by B a rb ara R uhnke , T o p ek a C h ap te r , and D o ro th y G ardner , Z o n t i a n , while R iver Bend A v ia t io n a t Amelia E a rh a r t A irport to o k care o f my plane. 1 was whisked to o u r h ead q u a r te rs at N ew m an Hall, Benedictine College. The a c c o m m o d a t io n s were lovely and incredibly reaso n a b le — $6.00 per person. After d r o p ­ping off the luggage a n d freshening up a bit, we headed stra ight to Lake W arn o ck and the Forest . Fo r ty acres is devoted to the Forest site, and there is a large cam psite by the Lake. Everyth ing is spread ou t a n d it gives y o u a m a rv e lo u s feel ing o f f r e e d o m in openness.

It was good to see old friends in the persons o f Nancy Hopkins , Alice an d J o h n H a m m o n d , Betty Gillies, Kay Brick, Irene W i r t s c h a f t e r , L o is F e i g e n b a u m , T h o n Griffi th, Valerie J o h n s o n , ju s t to nam e a few. **

The cerem ony was w arm , friendly and i m p r e s s iv e — g r a t i f y i n g ly w e l l - a t t e n d e d . There was even a lem onade stand th a t was well pa tron ized by thirs ty visitors.

Luncheon for ab o u t 150 followed the cerem ony back at Benedictine College. It was se rved buffet style a n d t h a t gave everyone a good o p p o r tu n ity to mingle. Highlight o f the luncheon was a brief talk by e a c h C h a p t e r M e m b e r o f th e 99s in a t tendance. The H onorab le Edna Sutlief, Vice M ayor o f Atchison, presented each 99 with a certif icate of H o n o ra ry Citizenship o f the City o f Atchison. They were accep ted by 65 o f us.

It was fun to c limb the stairs holding the banis te r Amelia slid d o w n as a little girl, and to s tand on th a t b a n k o f the Missouri River to look d o w n a t the caves hidden in the brush where she and her sister, Muriel, frolicked, teasing the boys. B arbara R uhm ke said the story is to ld th a t the boys had an exclusive all -male c lub using a cave as a clubhouse. Amelia and Muriel m anaged to coax a goa t dow n the e m b a n k m e n t in to the boys’ cave. Those boys had one very difficult t ime gett ing it ou t and never did find out how they had go t ten it there.

We visited the library, M uchn ic Historical M u seu m w h ere th e re was a d i sp la y o f n o tab le , p r i z e w in n in g p h o to s t a k e n by women o f w om en of p rom inence in all fields; f rom queens to dust-bowl victims to rivitors in W orld W ar II. A tch ison is u n iq u e fo r its varied architec tura l hom e-s ty l ing a n d most appreciative o f this heritage. I lost c oun t o f the num ber o f homes federally designated “ Historic Sites ."

The c o m m u n i ty definitely needs w hat o u r Ninety-N ine chap ters and sections have to offer in the field of avia tion. W hether it be a school en r ichm ent p ro g ram , a slide presen­t a t i o n a n d sp e a k in g e n g a g e m e n t , o r a

teachers w ork sh o p , the need is there. There is the need for good resource people , where a school o r an interested civic g ro u p can tu rn t o f o r h e lp a n d g u i d a n c e , i d e a s a n d materials . In July, these ideas and m any m any m ateria ls were pu t in to o u r hands via the Ninety-N ines Air Age W o rk sh o p held in

O k la h o m a . Now with these tools o u r j o b is ju s t beginning and it is a big one where every 99 c h ap te r a n d section, has to be actively involved. Only with com ple te coopera tion , can we m ak e our goal successful . . . to in form and enrich the c o m m u n i ty and help m ake th em bette r aero -m in d ed citizens.

T he slides and in fo rm at ion were ga thered from several sources such as N B A A , G A M A , and m any state a n d federal agencies. But the use o f slides f rom the local area , definitely adds interest to the p rog ram . O th e r p rogram s, “ W om en in A v ia t ion— Yesterday & T o d a y ”, and a short “ History o f the N ine ty-N ines”, were designed to c o m plim en t each o th e r in the “ who are we?” d e p a r tm e n t and “w hat could a w o m an possibly do with an a irp lane?” syndrom e. This in fo rm a t io n seems to fill the gap o f just plain lack o f in fo rm a t ion and overcom es the associated d isbe lie fs . As p a r t o f th e i r a u d io -v i su a l e qu ipm en t, the M ary lan d girls bring with them a flight s im ula tor . I t ’s use has a d d ed a n ew d i m e n s i o n to t h e i r p r e s e n t a t i o n s . A lthough this might involve a slight cost, the sm all c h a rg e c a n be p assed o n to the pa r tic ipan ts w ho a re so eager to get a chance “to fly” the s im ula tor . Because o f their successes, M ary land C h a p te r has received severa l a w a rd s i n c lu d in g “ T h e A v ia t io n Certif icate o f M er i t” presented by G A M A .

full o f interest for everyone, and Lakeside In te rna t iona l Hotel had lovely a c c o m m o d a ­t ions. We ate , and we ate , a n d we ate! We were tru ly wined and dined.

A welcom e lunch on W ednesday began the festivities. Guest speaker was Dr. J o h n Colvin , C o n su l tan t O p h th a lm o lo g is t to the New S o u th Wales Section o f the Royal Flying D o c to r Service. We hard ly had time to digest the delicious food until it was time for d inner , which was followed by Mr. J u s t i c e B lac k b u rn , C h ie f J u s t i c e o f the

S u p rem e C o u r t of the Aus tra l ian Capita l Terr i tory . Jus tic B lackburn spoke on the history o f the A.C.T. and C anberra .

Session. Again m uch discussion was held on membership and dues with m uch m isu n d er­standing being cleared up. Thon Griffith, incoming In terna tional President, exp la ined the new m ethod o f inform ing the chap ters o f m em ber’s renewals which we believe will be successful.

A special slide p resen ta tion on the History of the Ninety-Nines was show n by Eloise Smith with the aid o f M aisie Stears. This excellent presenta tion was put toge the r by E loise a n d M ary C rea so n w ith S a lly Buegeleisen, d ia lo g u e a n d Susan O liver narrating. This will be available for the Chapters and in fo rm at ion will be fo r th ­coming in the 99 News. An In terna t iona l Luncheon followed which led us to the first business session o f the 1978 convention .

It is expected that each 99 at the c o n v en ­tion will bring back to her C h a p te r m ore detailed information of the C o m m Session. Since our first C o m m Session in C o eu r D ’Alene, Idaho, this a long with the R ou n d

We became one big family as we traveled together. We know w ho was a p t to be the last one on the bus, a n d w ho would be w a n ­der ing up and d o w n the aisles, w he ther on the bus o r the airplane. Never has the c a p ­tains on the comm ercia l airlines had so

The 99s a re an independent bunch, but they can c o o p e r a t e a l s o . T h e r e is a f e e l in g o f c o m rad esh ip a m o n g this g ro u p th a t is hard to find otherwise.

We met in person Barbara Cannon from England, renewed our friendship with Kim from Korea and met her lovely guests. Once aga in we were honored to have Anesia M achado f rom Brazil a t tend , as well as each a n d every 99 from each a n d every cou n try th a t was represented.

We saw sheep, sheep, sheep, fed k a n g a ­roos and petted koalas. We learned a lot and feel we shared our knowledge in return.

Each person a t tend ing the convention , w he ther f rom the United Sta tes or overseas had to go h o m e with their chest bursting with pride to be a m em ber o f the In terna­t ional O rgan iza t ion o f W om en Pilots, The N inety-N ines, Inc. There were 286 registered o f which 125 were U.S.A. 99s. We will a lways rem em b er Gwen Caldwell leading us in song at the conclusion o f the Installation Banquet and the jo in ing o f hands as we sang Auld Lang Syne. Pam Collin, Ena M onk, and the o ther New Zealand pilots a re friends now, not names. The party a t R o to ru a A ero C lub is never to be forgotten. Pam thril led us with her experiences par tic ipa ting in the A e ro ­batic C ham pionsh ips in Russia in 1976 while we visited a t her p a ren t ’s h o m e in C hris t ­church. We visited the city o f A uckland where the “ Dirty D o zen " was form ed. Hazel Jones is the h o n o ra ry m em ber ro u n d in g out the m em bersh ip to 12. We traveled by bus f rom A uckland to R o to ru a where we saw how beautiful the New Z ea land countrys ide is. The M aori culture fascinated us. Lady Mary S. H eath

Lady M ary Heath was one o f the three pilots outside the U S A w ho m ade The Ninety-Nines o f In terna tiona l s ta tus f rom its b e g inn ing . S h e was b o r n S o p h ie M a ry Pierce Evans in C oun ty Limerick, Ireland in 1896.

In an interesting letter f rom her in August o f 1936, she reported: "I s ta r ted flying at The L ondon A eroplane C lub in 1924, where I took bo th my “ A" and “ B”, o r C om m erc ia l licenses. I was the first w o m a n in the world to get a “ B” af te r the war. I still have it. 1 have by my log-book 2,670 hours and 76 types of different a irc raf t and gliders, including one, two and three-engined aircraft . I am now M anag ing Director o f D ublin Air Ferries, Ltd., Dublin (C. A. R. Williams was the Flying M an ag er at th a t time). 1 have fou r m achines under me: three t ra in ing Gypsy M oths, a larger Fox M o th , for passengers, as well as an Aeronca which I fly on all my business, which has un d e r it the D ublin A ero Club. T he C lub has issued tw o-th irds o f all the licenses issued in Ireland in the past year. The best machines I have flown in my life are the S tea rm an , the New S ta n d a rd , the M o th and the F o k k e r three-engined. I flew for nearly 70,000 miles as second pi lot with the K LM before com ing to the S ta tes in 1928. (She acquired p i lot’s license #5333).

“ 1 never held the C ape T o w n — L o n d o n record , but my flight in 1928 was the first solo flight ever made by any h u m a n being, m an or w o m an , f rom any overseas C olony o r D o m in io n to England. As for flying, 1 h a te in s t ru c t in g bu t love lo n g d i s ta n c e flying. Racing is to my m ind the most exciting and interesting. 1 have 143 cups and medals for i t.”

It was reported M ary was the first w o m a n to receive an avia tion m echan ic ’s license f rom the Dept, o f C om m erce . The license was issued her in Feb ru a ry o f 1929. While in this C o u n try , she edited a co lu m n “ W o m e n ’s Activities” in the m agazine Avialion. She a lso had a three year tenu re as President of the W o m e n ’s In terna tiona l Associa t ion o f A eronautics in the late '20s.

Even at the time o f Lady H e a th ’s dea th in M ay, 1939, f rom injuries suffered when she fell d o w n the stairs o f a L o n d o n double-deck street car , the press d id no t relent and went o u t o f its way to review her m atr im onia l t rack record . Maj. E ll iott L ynn was 7 6 at the t im e o f their m arr iage , and Sir J a m es Heath was 72 when they m arried in 1927. In c on tra s t , G. A. R. Williams was 33 when they m arried .

At the early age o f 43, the spec tacu lar and f lam b o y an t career o f Lady Heath was over.

I recall a letter addressed to Bobbi T rou t in which Lady H eath advoca ted carry ing a m echanic a long with the 1929 W o m e n ’s Air D e r b y e n t r i e s . H o w e v e r , t h e m a j o r i t y preferred flying solo, so H eath did not enter the com pet i t ion . She d id go to the term inus a t Cleveland and pa r tic ipa ted in one o f the 50-mile pylon races—flying a G rea t Lakes, she placed th ird behind P hoebe Omlie and Jessie (C hubby) Keith-Miller. M ary also flew a glider in exh ib i t ion and then she and Irwin Kirk, a Cleveland m echanic , were involved in a near-fa ta l acc ident when their p lane plunged th ro u g h the ro o f o f the Mill’s C o m p a n y on C leve land’s east side. She was h o sp i ta l i z e d fo r sev e ra l m o n th s be fo re recovery.

Being in the limelight had its d isa d v an ­tages a n d a nu m b er o f t imes the subject did " c o m b a t” with the press. Som etim es the reporte rs went out o f the ir way to be d e ro g a ­tory. An April ’31 headline f rom W indsor, Ont. , read: “ Lady M ary H ea th jailed as d ru n k , fails to a p p e a r ”. Air Traffic C ontroller Training for th e USAF

This multi-million do l la r m arvel is referred to by Mr. C larence H am il ton an d Col. M arv in Smith, o u r hosts, as the "G ee W hiz .” It is newly opera t iona l and was in accep tance test opera t ion by personnel o f the d e s ig n er / - builder, the AAI Corp. o f Cockneysville, MD.

The task o f annually t ra in ing a p p r o x i ­mately 1500 U S A F and allied n a t io n s ’ a ir traffic con tro l lers falls to the Air Traffic C on tro l B ranch 3380th Technical T ra in ing G roup a t Keesler AFB. S im ula t ion o f the a irport t raffic env ironm en t had previously b een c o n d u c t e d by p e r s o n n e l w a l k in g a round a table m ade with a runw ay layout, hand carry ing a irp lanes o r m oving them abou t at end end o f a stick. N o t m uch realism there!

Inside the quiet, d a rkened “ Gee W h iz” cab the feel ing o f rea l i ty is g r ip p in g . A rrangem ent of in s t rum en ta t ion and three- contro l ler position layout is identical to s tandard configura tion used th ro u g h o u t the military. Look ing forward from the 180 windows the trainee sees a semi-circular screen on which various a irc raf t a re m oving ahout over intersecting runways. F ro m the ap ro n at the tower base, t ax iways lead to the properly m arked thresholds . T o the right are hangars , to the left a city and low hills ap p ea r on the horizon. This is C a n y o n AFB, the p h a n to m lo ca t io n a lw ay s used fo r training. The selected view m ay he C A V U , foggy o r ra iny with a specified visibility at which a ircraft a p p ea r o r d isap p ea r from view. It m ay be night t ime when over 1.000 fiber optics lights can be tu rned up f rom the tower for a p p ro ac h lighting, runw ay and blue tax iw ay lights. An a l te rna t ing green and white heacon ro ta tes on a tow er nearby. The lights o f the city com e on. Realism extends to the presence o f g ro u n d vehicles, the ro a r o f an F4 as it arrives on the ram p and shuts dow n while a T34 a p p ro ach es slowlv and is being quickly o ve r taken by an FI4.

To unders tand how this m arvel is ac ­complished, we walk out o f the d a rkened cab into the heavily air c o nd it ioned and lighted area tha t is built inside a hanger to house the s im ula to r in a con tro l led e n v iro n ­

ment. T he spell is b roken! This is a R ube G o ld b e rg look ing device som e th ree stories tall. At the g ro u n d level a re six “p i lo t” co m p u te r posi t ions fo r the crew w ho receive ins tructions f rom the trainees, respond by voice as a pilot and key in to the c o m p u te r console such p re -p ro g ram m ed m aneuvers as missed a p p ro a c h or a lm os t any type o f ap p ro ac h , d e p a r tu re o r emergencies . Above the c ab in the th ird level is a tow er o f sixteen p ro jec tors ro ta t in g busily and som ew hat noisi ly in a 180° arc. At the base a re fou r p ro jec tors fo r the back-grounds. As m an y as 12 a irc raf t and four g ro u n d vehicles may move a b o u t sim ultaneously . T he pro jec tors o pera te 450 frames at 60 fram es per second so tha t the a ircraft travel quite sm oo th ly ab o u t the screen. Each p ro jec tor holds 24 rolls o f slide str ips and while one side is in use the o th e r reloads.

F o r m a l t r a in in g o f c o n t r o l l e r s c o m ­menced in 1942 when the Civil A eronaut ics A dm in is tra t ion began t ra in ing schools at each o f its seven regions fo r C A A personnel , as well as Arm y, Navy, and s tu d en ts o f allied governm ents . The first courses were moved to Keesler AFB , M S f rom Scott A FB , IL in 1949 and were located in a h a n g a r with o p e n - to p c lassrooms. Class room s are now in C o d y Hall. After the v icarious session with the V F R s im ula tor , we tou red the class­ro o m s and IF R R A P C O N tra in ing room.

The r a d a r scopes would seem to be part o f an A R T C C and a l though efficiently practical they lack the visual d ra m a o f the V FR s im u la to r . W ith th is c o m p le te t r a in in g facility, Keesler will p robab ly be used by all branches o f the service in the future. We are interested to hear tha t f rom virtually no w om en con tro l le r trainees in I960, their num bers now comprise a b o u t 32%.

L unch at the Officers ' C lub was a cc o m ­panied by service tales and h an g ar flying of the highest order, a welcome relief f rom the tens ion o f the tra in ing room s. 9 ,

Esme Williams

Esme was b o rn in a little to w n called D u m fr ie s , S c o t la n d a n d left th e re fo r C a n ad a in 1954. It was du r ing this period in C a n ad a tha t she met her h usband , Jo h n , and s u b s e q u e n t ly g o t invo lved in th e i r o w n business of m achine design and m a n u fa c tu r ­ing m achines used in the ru b b e r an d plastics industries. The previous business experience from the age o f 18 as c o rp o ra te secre tary to various engineering a n d related o rg an iza ­t io n s p ro v e d very usefu l to h e r in her position as d i rec to r and c o m p a n y secretary of their business.

Flying was the farthest th ing f rom her mind until her h usband decided to t ak e it up as a m eans o f relieving som e o f the pressures of business. Esme is the first to ad m it th a t this fad o f her h usband bo th horrif ied and scared her because she felt she w ould be put in the position o f doing likewise. Her fear o f flying was very real, as no d o u b t m any m em b e rs will a d m i t to . T h e in ev i tab le happened in the middle o f 1965 when she was persuaded to m ake an a p p o in tm e n t for her first lesson. A m ore intrepid s tu d en t one could not wish to meet but, th ro u g h sheer d e te r m in a t io n a n d , a f te r an a b se n c e o f nearly one year, she became the p ro u d possessor o f her private pi lot license at B u t to n v i l l e , O n t a r i o , C a n a d a . In t h e meantim e, her husband had bought their first p lan e— a Carl Millard m odified 180 h.p. Apache , which was flown for m any happy ho u rs th ro u g h o u t C a n ad a , United States and Mexico.

It was d u r in g this t ime th a t Esme became acqua in ted a n d involved with o th e r female flying c o m p a n io n s and it was at th a t poin t and time it was decided to reactivate the C an ad ian Section o f the Ninety-Nines. Ju s t prior to that t ime Esme jo ined the Ninety- Nines and at the reactivation she was First C an ad ian C h a p te r Secretary. T w o years later she progressed to the office o f C h a p te r C h a irm an and. in the m ean t im e had headed various c h ap te r and section comm ittees. A n o th e r two years later she was elected as East C a n ad a Section Secretary.

A bout this t ime the favorite A pache “C F - OH K", was regretfully t rad ed in on an Aztec “C F - R X T ”, a n o th e r Carl Millard Nyack conversion. It was on this a ircraft that she received her M .O.T. multi-engine ra ting from check ride pilot Ja c k Austin. In the meantime, husband J o h n had received his C lass O n e I n s t r u m e n t R a t in g a n d the horizons opened up.

T im e w as m o v in g sw if t ly a lo n g , th e business had becom e very successful having na t iona l and in te rna t ional recognition , plus lots o f feelers f rom prospective buyers for the c o m p an y . It was decided if this was a p p a r e n t l y a p o s s ib i l i t y , t h e y s h o u l d consider a “ plane with ro u n d the world , high a lt i tude an d long range capabili ty" . T h e re ­fore, the faithful Aztec was t rad ed fo r a b r a n d s p a n k in g new E x ec u t iv e T u r b o - c h a rg e d S k y k n ig h t (C e ssn a 3 2 0 F ) “ C F - E J W ”. This p lane was equ ipped with some very sophis t ica ted equ ip m en t a n d was the first privately owned plane with w eather

r a d a r in C a n ad a . Serious travel was then p ro g ram m ed .

The first long t r ip was the whole o f S o u th Am erica (all th ir teen countries) , a p p ro x i ­m ately 25,000 miles and a d u ra t io n o f fou r m on ths . She crossed the A ndes sixteen times and flew extensively th ro u g h the A m azon basin, land ing a t rem ote jung le a irp o r ts such as Iqu itos in Peru and Leticia in C o lo m b ia , but her biggest thrill was land ing a t the h ighest a irp o r t in the world. La Paz. in Boliv ia w i th a n e le v a t io n o f 13,400 ft. Pe rhaps an indica tion o f her abil i ty to plan a n d o r g a n iz e w as th a t ev ery h o te l was b o oked an d permission to land on specific days a t each a irp o r t was all received well in

advance and the schedule was faithfully adhered to th ro u g h o u t the 25,000 mile trip, a r r iv in g b a ck in T o r o n to on schedule . S hor t ly a f te r this t r ip they sold their business and moved to the Baham as, jus t as Esme was finishing her term as East C a n a d a Section Secretary.

Twelve years have now gone by since Esme became a m em ber o f the Ninety-Nines an d every year she had held office, e ither at chap ter , section o r in te rna t iona l level. She has served on the In te rna tiona l Board of D irectors twice and is curren t ly a m em ber of t h e B o a r d o f D i r e c t o r s , I n t e r n a t i o n a l M em b ersh ip C h a irm an (outside the U.S.A.) and Retir ing G o v e rn o r o f the C ar ibbean Section. She is the first C a r ib b ean Section G o v e rn o r and was in fact ins t rum enta l in helping to fo rm this relatively new section. It is an indica tion o f her ded icat ion to the Ninety-Nines.

As In terna t iona l M em bersh ip C ha irm an , she has to deal with m any inquir ies and prob lem s from o u r many m em bers outside the U.S.A. and , since her re ti rem ent from business in 1971, devotes all her t ime to flying, travelling and the Ninety-Nines. The well travelled and beloved Cessna 320 has seen over 56 different countr ies (the flags o f each c oun try em blazon the vertical stabili­zer), plus fou r transa t lan t ic crossings, one crossing from the Azores to T orbay , C a n ad a which to o k 8 hrs. 36 mins.

Out r all the fly ingshe has done , with and without her husb an d , pe rh ap s the proudest day o f her flying experience was the day when she switched to Prestwick C on tro l and s t a r t e d a n I n s t r u m e n t let d o w n in to Prestwick Airport , Sco tland , her m other country . T he landing lights were on as the faithful Cessna slipped th ro u g h the scud on final and she found , to her am azem en t , tha t a con tingen t o f ab o u t four hu n d red Scots were waving and cheering on the v is itors’ viewing balcony. She later learned tha t a n u m b er o f V H F radios were do t ted am ongs t the c rowd an d her family and friends had been listening to her receiving the ap p ro ac h an d land ing clearances.

This would be hard to top , but on the second tr ip across to Sco tland from the B aham as , permiss ion had been received to land a t a disused W orld W ar T w o R.A .F . a irp o r t , namely Heathhall A irport , D u m ­fries, Sco t land . This a irp o r t is virtually a t the fron t d o o r o f her b ro th e r ’s farm and her m o th e r and fa th e r’s house. *»

One very large p rob lem with this year’s rep o rt was the d is t inc t ion between Safety E duca tion and Aerospace Education . We gave po in ts only if the event was specific to Safety Education . Several chap ters sponsored a ir races, o thers had fly-in picnics, etc. Each project was evaluated as to the a m o u n t o f suppor t ing in fo rm a t ion prov ided tha t verified the Safety E duca tion content.

Also, next year, the report fo rm s will be mailed to each chap ter before Decem ber . M aybe we can get 100% partic ipa tion instead of 46'/$%. We can sure try! *»

Central Illinois Chapter Ninety-Nine, Jean McLaughlin, shares 49'/2er Mac's fo u r year dream o f crossing the N orth A tlantic Ocean. They were accom panied by Vietnam War helicopter pilot, Jim Schulte and his wife, Joe.

At d a y b r e a k , J u n e 2 0 th , t h e g r o u p boarded the M c L augh l in ’s 1962 Beechcraft Travel Air a n d headed n o n -s to p for O ttaw a. O n ta r io , C anada .

F ro m O ttaw a to Schefferville, Quebec, C a n a d a a n d th e n to F r o b i s c h e r Bay , Northwest Territories, C a n ad a , where they “ began seeing icebergs”.

F ro m Frobischer Bay the g ro u p winged to S ondre s t ron , G reen land , crossed the ice cap to Reykjavik, Iceland, a n d arrived at their d est ina t ion o f Prestwick, Sco t land , at one a .m ., Ju n e 22nd.

They left the a ircraft at Prestwick and drove by car th ro u g h England to visit several a ir bases. Then they reversed the trip.

It was on the re tu rn flight th a t t roub le d e v e lo p e d , p ro v id in g the “ five p e rce n t t e r ro r” .

Leaving Sco tland , the flight was sm ooth . T hey flew to Reykjavik as p lanned and spent two days seeing Ireland.

t a k e s a b o u t f ive h o u r s . A p p r o a c h i n g Narsarssuag , however, dense ice fog had moved in and closed the land ing strip. With no visual ap p ro ac h , they were unable to land.

They were forced to veer n o r th for a 380- nautical mile flight to S o n d re s ts ro n , M ac a n d J im a t the con tro ls and Je a n a n d J o e in the tw o rear seats o f the f ive-passenger plane, which had been converted to a four- passenger.

The ex tra space beh ind Je a n a n d Joe , c on ta ined eight 10-gallon plastic cans. This fuel proved to be a most va luable passenger.

As the ice fog th ickened , static electricity began build ing up a lo n g the p lan e ’s 37-foot w ingspan and a long the 25-foot cabin. The static d ischarged the plane 's A D F , m ak ing their nav iga tion “by guess a n d by g o sh ”. J im was at the con tro ls a n d was the ‘a u to p i lo t ’.

W ith a pay load o f 4,200 pou n d s the plane had a m a x im u m en d u ran c e range o f seven a n d one-ha lf hours.

Je a n a n d J o e were the refuelers, by using a special se tup th a t plugged in to the aircraft cigarette lighter, and p u m p ed fuel into the wing tanks.

After seven hours and fifteen minutes flight, the plane safely tou ch ed d o w n at Sondres t ron . Jean said it was a m a z in g — after five hours of flight w i thou t the A D F , we were right on target.

“W e still had plenty o f fuel,” M ac said of the ordeal. “ But if we h ad n ' t had the extra , w e’d have been on the fum es .”

A ny tr ips o f a similar n a tu re in the offing? “C hances a re ,” M ac said. “ O n the way hom e we th o u g h t w e’d never d o it again. But, we p ro b ab ly will.” "N o t next week, th o u g h ," Je a n said. »v

Gee, i t ’s great to have a simple a irp lane th a t d o e sn ’t require all the m ain tenance and upkeep the Bird d id —a n d can land in half the d istance!

You should see som e o f the Indian tribal strips w e’ve been in to — 3 0 0 meters long su r­rou n d ed by I 5 - - 2 0 0 ' trees on all sides— like land ing th ro u g h a tu n n e l—a very short tunnel!

But the Islander can h and le it f ine—and still carry 2 2 0 0 lbs. in and out. She has seats fo r 10. but we've had up to 14 Indians in h e r — th ey d o n ’t m in d be in g c r o w d e d - know ing tha t every 15 m inutes flying equals days paddling a d u g o u t c a n o e — or weeks by foot slashing th ro u g h the thick jungle.

The past few weeks w e’ve been flying in the V au p e ’s area o f the upper A m a zo n head w a ters— serving tribes 1 h av en ’t visited for several years. Gee, are they g lad to see us again! A nd I them!

fields) growing well, and happy , healthier people living with hope fo r the first t im e— it really m akes my heart glad to see happy, h e a l th y I n d i a n s — a n d to k n o w G o d is e x p r e s s i n g H is lo v e f o r t h e s e p e o p le s th r o u g h u s — a n d y o u all a re the m ain channel o f G o d ’s love, for w ithout your love, prayers and suppor t . 1 could d o nothing.

General InformationAbout 99s and their Activities

The Saskatchewan Chapter held their 6th an n u a l P o k e r R un which again was a big success. Tw enty-one a ircraft took part and over 200 P o k e r hands were played. They arrived a t their term inus, H um bolt , for lunch a n d prizes. T he First Prize o f $100 was won by David C o o p e r o f Regina. Only one w o m a n flew the Poker Run this year, Kay C o o k of Birch Hills, who w on a p i lo t ’s knee board fo r her efforts.

Middle EastThe Delaware Chapter also held a

Penn ies -A -Po u n d Day for the benefit o f the M ary land W ing o f the Civil Air Patrol.

The Delaware Chapter m em bers served refreshm ents at several avionics clinics held a t S u m m it A irport , M iddletown, DE. These e d u c a t io n a l m ee t in g s w ere o p e n to th e public at no charge.

Sou th Centra l Africa 99s have been very energetic in their par tic ipa tion o f the av ia ­tion scene a n d two years ago char te red an aircraft to take local flying enthusiasts dow n to S o u th Africa for the “ Air A fr ica In te rna t iona l” opening o f Lanseria A ir­port near Jo h an n esb u rg . (Story in “ 99 N E W S ” with p h o to o f Sheila Scott w ho graced the Air Show .)

The second A ir Show prom ises to be even be tte r and the 99s here a re char te r ing a Boeing 727 to take as m any as possible dow n to A v ia t io n ’s Shop W indow .

All the com m ittee o f the R hodesian Flame Lily C h a p te r will be d o n n in g their navy/w hite u n ifo rm s to escort the passen­gers and the m any m em bers o f this fast growing Section.

East CanadaThe Eastern Ontario Chapter o f the 99s

gave the Big and Little Sisters, an o rg an iza ­tion sitTlilar to the Big Brothers , qu ite a lift when they arranged for a flight for a b o u t 90 individuals over Ottaw a. A local TV s ta tion covered the event thereby achieving m uch needed publicity o f the Big Sisters. Several had never been a irbo rne before and it was greatly enjoyed by all. After a hot d o g lunch, the group viewed the na tiona l aeronau tica l collection on the o th e r side o f Rockcliffe Airport.

A couple o f weeks later, eight m em bers o f the chapter , one 49'/$er and a visitor applied

fresh pain t to the n um bers and th resho ld on Rockcliffe A irpor t before daylight an d the p a in t ra n o u t . R ockcl i f fe F ly in g C lu b provided the pa in t and Suzanne Frogley, incom ing C h a irm a n , organized the o p e ra ­tion.

New EnglandIt was a perfect flying day when 99s from

the fou r New England Section C hapte rs arrived at Silver Ranch A irport , Jaffrey, New H am pshire , for lunch and a “Trinke ts and T reasu res" sale. They enjoyed a picnic- style lunch and a social h o u r followed by an auc t ion to raise m oney for the 99 M useum in D ay ton , Ohio. C h a r te r M em ber Nancy Tier served as auctioneer for the m any items d o n a ted by members. Proceeds from the auc t ion to ta led $128.50.

New York-New JerseyA two-night safety clinic sponsored by the

Long Island 99s and the FA A was a ttended by over 450 pilots. Six courses, directed by C F I Safety C ounse lors , were presented and a certif icate of merit was presented to all those who a t tended all o f the sessions. The L ong Island 99s also celebrated General Aviation Week with a static display at the W alt W h itm an Mall. They also had displays

Air Force T hunderb irds , ae ro b a tic s tars Bob H oover in the Shrike A e ro -C o m m a n d e r , Art Scholl in his C h ip m u n k , Jo e Hughes, The Red Devils, The U. S. A rm y ’s Golden K n ig h t s P a r a c h u t e T e a m , t h e F r e n c h M u n d ry T eam -plus the mili tary Harr ie r d e m o n s tra t in g it’s vertical lift-off, hovering, and horizontal m aneuvering capabilities. The a ir show term inated with hot a ir ba lloon races and experim ental a ircraft fly-bys.

Millie Murray, Vice Chairman of the Central New York Chapter was recently named to fill a vacancy on the Mexico (NY) Village Board of Trustees She is also a 2Lt in the Civil Air Patrol.

North Central

The Greater St. Louis Chapter com bined their installation o f officer’s luncheon with an exciting guest speaker in the person o f Jo se f Seidel. He cam e a rm ed with the latest color slides being sent back to ear th from o u r f a r f lu n g sp a c e e x p lo r e r s a n d the practical knowledge o f being an engineer in the space p ro g ram a t M cD onne l l-D oug las . M r. S e id e l , a G e r m a n - b o r n e n g in e e r , presented a most interesting and th o u g h t- p rovoking program on A m erica ’s role in the space program.

A ll-O h io m e m b e r R o s a lie B u rch ettdelighted y o u n g c hurch c am pers in a un ique way. She rented a Cessna 172 (an o therwise P iper dealer) and proceeded to d ro p candy to the cam pers supervised by her counse lo r son. Bill. After the last pass and all the candy had been picked up, the youngsters fo rm ed a “th a n k y o u ” on the ground .

The M ichigan Chapter has d o n a ted a scholarsh ip to the M ichigan W ing o f the C iv i l A i r P a t r o l . T h e s c h o l a r s h i p is designated to be used by a female C A P cadet in the Learn to Fly p ro g ram and will take her to the solo point.

Jan Russell, C h a irm an , Mary C reason of the M ichigan A eronaut ics C om m iss ion and Chris W inzer of the F A A and all Lake M ichigan Chapter, scheduled an Air Age E duca tion W o rk sh o p which was an all day event S a tu rd ay , Sept. 9. The F A A , G A M A , N A S A as well as the M A C to o k part. The sess ions c o v e re d s c h o o l ’s needs , a i r p o r t s im ula t ion , paper a irc raf t cons truc t ion and careers.

The Second A nnua l G rea t Lakes Treasure H un t is being spon so red by the Greater D etroit Area C h a p te r 99s an d is scheduled fo r N o v em b er 4th. The event is a test of p i lo t ’s abil i ty to navigate accurate ly , observe g ro u n d objects by clues and a chance to sha rp en flying skills.

The Michigan Chapter is deep in a project to sell the Aerospace Education board to the FBOs of primary airports in the state. This also helps to further the chapters' efforts to encourage safety education . The board is held by C hapter C hairm an June P a ilthorp and Bill Lyons, manager IFC Aviation.

G ordy Am undson, M anager of T echn ica l Training for North Central Airlines, put the Minnesota Chapter through its paces with three training sessions called "Shape-Up for Spring " He had us doing mental gymnastics and at times we had trouble with our rights and lefts. As a "Thank You" to Gordy, we decided to settle it once and for all and present him with permanent proof ..a port and starboard jacket which he models.

NorthwestThe “ Ahrens R e trea t” in the Laramie

Peak area near W hea tland was the scene o f the recent meeting of the W yom ing C h a p ­ter. A bent S tinson propeller is par t o f the living ro o m decor o f the rustic cabin. M em ­bers voted to protest the p roposed F A A cer­tificate fee increase. T he agenda fo r the next six m on ths was set a n d a to u r o f a rem ote fire lo okou t s ta tion concluded the meeting.

Elsie M acD ougall, Far West Chapter, delegate, and d a u g h te r Christie , a ttended the In terna tional C o n v en t io n in C anberra , Australia . Inasm uch as their luggage was lost fo r a b o u t a week, they were m em bers of the “ Dirty D o z en ” with o thers in the same predicam ent.

Alaska 99s held their first Poker R u n the end o f Ju ly . All went well, w eather included. Tw o troph ies were aw arded . The one for fastest tack time went to Lou Fenn in her Cessna 180. Judy H oltm an, a new 99, flew her Cessna 150 and cam e hom e with the prize for d raw ing the best poker hand on the run. Betsy Nobm ann and 49'/2er Bob should have received a b o o b y for d raw ing the longest a n d most bor ing rou te to fly in their 172. The Anchorage and C ook Inlet C hap te r 99s a t te m p ted top rendezvous at Seldovia f o r a w e e k - e n d f ly - in a n d o v e r - n i g h t cam ping get together. Joy and Vern Craig Hew a Cessna 172 dow n at 5 a.m. and were able to land on the 2600 foot strip with little p roblem . Those w ho followed later (about 11 a.m.) , namely Edith and Carl M iller in a C herokee W arr io r , Judi Brown and Joe Holden in J o e ’s Cessna 180, Ruby and George Pappas in their Widgeon, and Judy

F o r those w ho managed to land, there was a n a d v en tu re ­some ride in a heavy w o o d en skiff to the o ther side o f the bay to a small w ooden cab in , tw o m in u s t ides w h ich su p p l ied excellent c lam digging, and hillsides full o f sa lmon and b lueberries fo r the berry pickers. Judy Johnson on the C ook Inlet C h a p te r was most cordia l to all flyers an d excited to have the o p p o r tu n i ty to talk with som e o ther wom en pilots since she is the only w o m a n pilot in the tow n o f Seldovia. T he winds were even worse on our day o f d e p a r tu re but fo r tunate ly all depar tu res were relatively uneventful.

As fall approaches , the Idaho 99s m ade their final su m m er flight to a fam o u s w inter resort area. A ntic ipa ting late August as the o f f - s e a s o n , we w e re a s t o u n d e d a t t h e bustling activity at the Sun Valley area a irport at Hailey. Flying in f rom the west takes one over Id a h o ’s rugged S aw to o th M o u n ta in ran g e a n d keeps a n a i r c ra f t engine run n in g in au to m a tic ro u g h for ab o u t 100 miles. However, a p p ro ac h in g the Sun Valley a rea f ro m the so u th keeps o n e happily over a valley f loor a n d only a little uncom fortab le as the valley walls n a r ro w at Hailey. There , the a irp o r t facilities a re great. The runw ay is long and wide, the traffic is polite, and the service we received c o u ld n ’t have been better. The unicorn serves very com peten tly as the mix o f traffic includes biz je ts , c o m m e rc ia l c a r r ie r s , g l ide rs a n d a melange o f general avia t ion a irc raf t from b a c k -c o u n t ry C u b s to tw in -e n g in e c ity - slickers

A walk to tow n found us a r e s tau ran t for lunch and a n o th e r rem arkab le c rush o f people. We c o u ld n ’t believe this was a winter resort area! It was not so busy you 'd want to avoid the area. O n the co n tra ry , it had an active healthy a tm oshpere , and the m o u n ­tain scenery and the friendly hospital i ty are likely to be found nowhere but in the West. It’s jus t th a t no one seemed to realize this was the "off-season”.

I now hope we find a chance to com e back when the m o u n ta in s are snow-covered . I am sure the scenery is b reath tak ing . If you visit dur ing the ski season, be p repared for the h o l id a y h u s t l e , b u t d o n ' t e x p e c t th e sum m er's off-season to have the sidewalks rolled up either. You will find fine a irp o r t fac i l i t ie s a n d c o u r t e o u s s e r v i c e a n d a friendly “ welcom e” to Sun Valley, Idaho.

A no ther project o f the Nebraska 99s is to provide rides from the L incoln Airport to the football s tad ium for people w ho fly in for University o f Nebraska footbal l games again this fall. If you p lan to fly in for a game, look for a Nebraska 99 in the lobby o f the Genera l Aviation Building.

Sue Burleigh, a South Louisiana 99, is the first female executive pilot for the State of Louisiana, On call 24 hours a day, Sue flies the governor and other top state executives to appointments throughout the South She has four planes at her disposal; two Aero Commanders, a Cessna 402 and a Beechcraft King Air

A lthough the R eno Area C h a p te r m em ­bers are sorry to lose Cheryl Jones, they are h ap p y to report th a t she has a great new jo b as W estern Regional M a n ag er fo r Narco, the only w o m a n in A dm inis tra t ion . She’ll con tin u e her flying as she will have an a irp lane with her job .

T h e i r last m ee t in g f e a tu re d sp e a k e r , K aren Wessel, w ho is a jo u rn e y m a n air traffic con tro l le r at O ak lan d Center. She presented a film, “ No R o o m for E r ro r”, which describes a no rm al day in the life o f a cen ter contro l ler . M em bers found it very in teres ting and informative.

This m o n th ’s repo rt jus t has to be ab o u t the g ro u p o f Orange County 99s tha t flew to the Amelia E arha r t Airport a t Atchison, Kansas to enjoy the celebrat ion a t the Forest o f F r i e n d s h i p h o n o r i n g , a m o n g o t h e r n o ta b le s , o u r o w n Thon G riffith . F o u r a irp lanes m ade the trip, and everyone did seem impressed th a t so m any o f us had come so far. It was a terriffic experience including dod g in g th u n d ers to rm s a n d som e practical 1FR work. N one o f us would have missed it for anything.

The Sacram ento Valley 99s are w ork ing enthusiastically tow ard the found ing o f the Silver Wings Aviation M useum located just outside S a c ram en to at M a th er Air Force Base. Involved in this a m bit ious project besides th e 99s, a re S a c r a m e n t o Valley P i lo ts A s so c ia t io n , the local c h a p t e r o f E AA, the U S A F a n d m any o th e r people active in avia tion.

Miriam Burcham , 99 and Design C h a ir ­m an for the entire m useum , assisted in ap p ro p r ia t in g a large section to the 99s in o r d e r t h a t t h e y m a y c o v e r fu l ly th e i n v o lv e m en t o f w o m e n f ro m N o r th e rn Califo rn ia in the field o f avia tion. This section is divided into six fields o f interest: history, w om en in the military, commercial , medical, educa tion and private aviation.

The public ded icat ion for the m useum was tenta tively set fo r Sep tem ber 23rd.

The most recent flying activity fo r the O klahom a C h a p te r was a to u r- lu n ch eo n in M uskogee . C h a p te r m em bers were m et a t the a irp o r t by a vintage W hite bus, which to o k th em to the J a m es C. Leake M useum of an t iq u e and classic au tom obiles . The Florida Gulfstream C h a p te r held its Ju n e m eeting on the 17th at the Avionics D iv is io n o f the B end ix C o r p o r a t i o n a t E x ec u t iv e A i r p o r t in F o r t L a u d e r d a le . C h a r lo t te was a m em ber an d co o rd in a to r fo r the U.S. team, which was com posed o f bo th military and c iv i l i a n m en a n d w o m e n p i lo t s . S h e described the events in the co m p e t i t io n and th e r i g o r s o f p r a c t i c e t o p e r f e c t th e maneuvers . Team m em bers , friends, the helicopter industry and interested avia t ion enthusiasts provided the funds fo r the U.S e n t r y ; f o r u n l ik e t h e o t h e r c o u n t r i e s partic ipa ting , no governm ent funds were used. The military pilots were par tic ipa ting as individuals on leave from active duty . The com pet i t ion is now history, and we know tha t on the eve of the event, the U.S military pilots were w ithd raw n by o rd e r o f the U.S. a d m i n i s t r a t i o n in p r o t e s t o f R u s s i a ’s p ro se c u t io n o f d iss id en ts . T h e c iv i l ian m e m b e r s , s t u n n e d by th e p r e c i p i t o u s w i thdraw al o f their colleagues, proceeded to adm irab ly represent the United S ta tes in the com petit ion , placing second to U S S R ’s first place.
