Volunteering as a familyTemecula’s Tichy family show how it’s done

The first time Foresters™ Member Develop-ment Specialist Talya Sloan met the Tichy family, she was setting up an overnight volunteer event doing a large-scale clean-up at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times®. It’s a hard, labor-intensive job performing tasks such as repairing cracked pool tiles. Make play a priorityHaving fun with the family

At Foresters, our purpose has always been to enhance the well-being of families. That’s why we’ve created a series of inspiring videos, and sponsored two online workshops focusing on the value of play.

With tips from parents and advice from childhood development experts on helping to restore quality playtime to busy, plugged-in kids, the videos and workshops provide invaluable support to parents and grandparents. For instance, you could make time for play every day, and provide

“open-ended” materials like blocks or paint that allow kids to imagine how they should be used. “Free play” empowers kids to cope with life, and builds the foundation for understanding everything from math, science, and language concepts to social interaction.

Foresters family commits to the communityContinued from front page

In fact, volunteering is an important parenting choice for Keri and her husband Jon. “My children are growing up with the understanding that they are part of a community, and that they have an impact on that community’s well-being; I think volunteering gives kids a great sense of belonging, personal responsibility, and self-esteem. What parent wouldn’t want that for their children?”

“We have always been a volunteering family,” adds Jon. “We had recently moved to the [Temecula] area, so we hadn’t been ‘plugged in’ to any community activities or volunteer opportunities. Finding Foresters was perfect timing for us. We became active with Foresters within months of purchasing our policies.”

Their great outlook on life and dedication to community service has paid off for them personally, too. Their daughter Nicole was recently the recipient of a Foresters Competitive Scholarship. “It’s amazing, the many ways Foresters has enriched my life. Not only have we had great service opportunities and family fun activities throughout the years, but I was awarded this incredible gift to help with my educa-tion. I’m so grateful for Foresters and their commitment to their members.”

Nicole plans to study Criminal Justice at California Lutheran University, and “her ultimate goal is to retire from the FBI,” laughs Keri. She’ll continue her volunteer

work while living away from home, working with the Thousand Oaks Police Department twice per month, and at a school event called “You Got Served” where freshmen clean up garbage from the bottom of the Ventura River.

Nicole has been recognized for her stellar academic record and commitment to the community outside of Foresters, too.

“Our local Hyundai dealership sponsored [a giveaway for a Hyundai Veloster], and asked graduating seniors in the community to put together a video telling about our achievements and goals, and explaining why we deserve to win a car. My video was selected as the winner! Now I’m learning to drive a manual transmission. Hopefully I’ll master it by the time I leave for college.”

With the whole family so active in the Foresters community, it’s not surprising that Keri has recently been elected as a Branch Councillor. “I was involved as an active member in the Temecula Branch for two years, and was thrilled to be appointed as a Branch Councillor for 2012 and 2013. I’m also happy to have the additional role of Chairman of the Emergency Assistance Committee for the Greater Southern California Council.”

The Tichys look forward to continuing to provide their community with excellent service. “I love that Foresters has so many available opportunities for people to get involved, on whatever scale they choose.”

Know your Benefits: Legal LinkEstate planning primer

Planning your estate may be one of the kindest things you can do for the loved ones you’ll leave behind.

Foresters spoke with Peter M. Neil, Esq., a lawyer specializing in estate planning, to get his advice on making the process as smooth as possible.

Here are six steps you should take when you plan your estate:

1 Take an inventory of your possessions and think about who you want to leave them to when you’re gone.

2 Consider who you want to be your executor—the person who will ensure that the terms of your Will are carried out.

3 Consider who you want to have Power of Attorney—the person who will take care of your personal financial needs in the event that you are unable to do it for yourself.

4 Consider what kind of care you would want if you were terminally ill or injured and unable to give specific direction to your doctor, and decide who you trust to make sure that level of care is given.

5 If you are someone who is in need of a guardian to take care of you or a conservator to manage your assets, consider who you would like these people to be.

6 Visit a lawyer and get everything signed, sealed and delivered.

If you have any questions about estate plan-ning, remember that as a Foresters member you can call Legal Link at 800 444 3043 to access certain complimentary and dis-counted legal services in your area, and to connect with lawyers for help with a vari-ety of issues, including Wills.

Nicole drives off to support her new community.
