R. J. Palacio's book Wonder explores the idea of kindness, courage, and wonder through the experiences of August (Auggie for short), a boy who was born with a facial deformity. On his first day of 5th grade at the new school, Auggie finds himself sitting alone during lunch. Then the reader meets Summer, my favorite character in the book. After exchanging names with August, Summer quickly makes a connection, "Hey, our names kind of match....Summer? August?...We can make this the 'summer only' table...Only kids with summer names can sit here." Summer knew how to set the table--not with flatware and dishes, but with a thoughtful connection. She used a simple

GIVE ALOHAIkaika and Stacey Higa lead Hamama CommunityChurch, a church plant of UABC located in Kahalu'u. One of the amazing ways God is working is through the KEY Project. The KEY Project is a non-profit organization which supports the after-school program Ikaika and Stacey lead. Most of the members of Hamama Community Church are people Ikaika and Stacey have met through the after-school program. During the month of September, if you give code #77728 while shopping at any Foodland store, Foodland will match a portion of the donation you make to the KEY Project.

SETTING THE TABLE

observation to make a cold lunch table feel like a special space. As the chapter goes on, Auggie and Summer brainstorm all of the other kids in their school whose names could be connected with the season of summer. When they thought of a name they couldn't connect with summer, they told each other they would make an exception for that person. They determined their table was a special space for anyone who wanted to join them. This exchange is the beginning of a very special friendship between Summer and Auggie. Summer is a great example of someone who makes a deliberate choice to be with and for another, a choice to practice hospitality.

During our mid-week gathering this month, September's Table, we will be exploring and practicing the art of conversation and the habit of hospitality. Sunday mornings can fly by and before we know it, we are in our cars headed home without really having any purposeful conversations with others in our church family. The same thing can happen with those in our oikos--we can spend hours with our co-workers or friends without really sharing our lives with them. In Paul's letter to the people of Thessalonica he writes, "Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well." (1 Thessalonians 2:8) Are we loving one another like we should? What does it look like to practice the habit of hospitality? How does anyone have time to really connect with those outside of their family? Join us on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM this month as we explore these questions and more.

The format for this mid-week gathering will be a little different than the gatherings we have done in the past. A simple meal will be served from 6:30 PM-6:45 PM. We will begin the multi-generational activities planned for the evening after the meal at 6:50 PM. The gathering will conclude at 7:30 PM.
