OLD HILL“It was my wife who initially discovered Woodbine cottage,” says Alan, “and she was so taken with it that I rather reluctantly agreed to come and take a look, and I have to say that the minute I set eyes on the house I too fell completely in love with it.”

Seller Insight This beautiful home, the original part of which dates back to c1850, sits in a superb position on the edge of the pretty

Worcestershire village of Flyford Flavell. It is a place that is enveloped by glorious rolling countryside, and yet it’s just a stone’s throw from the thriving town of Worcester and also lies in close proximity to Birmingham City centre.

“We were searching for a house in a countryside village, and the rural feel and connectivity of Flyford Flavell pushed all of our buttons. In terms of the house itself, we could see that it had huge potential to be transformed into a really stunning family home and so we immediately embarked upon a quite ambitious project of renovation. We redesigned the property and refurbished it throughout to create a fabulous country house with a wonderfully contemporary interior, and in the last three years we’ve re-roofed the property and created a big, open-feeling kitchen that flows straight into a gorgeous new garden room. I’d say we’ve spent the past ten to twelve years focussing on getting the property right up to scratch and the whole house is now utterly stunning.”

“The hub of the house is without doubt the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area,” says Alan. “It’s a huge space which opens into the garden room and then out onto the lovely big patio. It’s a wonderfully bright and airy part of the house, and a space that flows beautifully.”

“The sitting room is another really beautiful part of the house,” says Alan. “It has a huge inglenook with an elm mantle, which was an old beam that came from a family farm. It’s a lovely focal point of the room and though it’s a generous space, with a fire roaring away in winter it’s wonderfully cosy.”

“The garden wraps around the front and two sides of the house and it has been beautifully landscaped to look extremely attractive, but at the same time to be very low maintenance,” continues Alan. “Beyond the garden room we have a sunken patio, and then the rest is mainly laid to lawn and incorporates a pretty summerhouse and a natural pond. All in all it’s a very peaceful and tranquil space.”*

“For us the location has been ideal,” says Alan. “I spent a lot of my working life travelling abroad, and getting to the various airports was incredibly easy. It was also wonderful to fly home on a Friday and know that I had

Woodbine Cottage to come home to, away from all the stresses of life.”

“If it weren’t for the fact that we’re moving abroad, we wouldn’t even consider leaving Woodbine Cottage,” says Alan. “It encapsulates everything we could want from a property

and we know it will be hard to find another quite like it.”

Worcester is the site of the final battle of the Civil War. The River Severn runs through the middle of this attractive city, overlooked by the 10th-century Worcester Cathedral.

The county town and historic city of Worcester is just 17 miles southwest of Birmingham and 23 miles north of Gloucester. The city historically hosted a flourishing glove making industry and was the home of Royal Worcester Porcelain as well as, for much of his life, the composer Sir Edward Elgar.

Providing the ideal location for retail therapy, there are three large covered shopping centres and an additional three out of town shopping parks. The main commercial centre can be found on the recently modified high street, home to a number of major retail chains and the older shopping streets contain numerous individual boutiques. There is also a racecourse, theatre, cricket club and university.

The green city of Worcester provides three spacious parks and two large woodlands covering over 33 hectares. The banks of the River Severn provide an idyllic setting for an evening stroll or bike ride, surrounded by the wonderful Worcestershire countryside bounded by the Malvern Hills and pretty market towns.

Historic landmarks include the spectacular Worcester Cathedral, dating back to the 10th Century and the Queen Anne style Guildhall designed by Thomas White, a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren in 1722. The latest landmark is Worcester’s new central library, ‘ The Hive ‘, a striking gold roofed building on the site of the former cattle market.
