FOCUS

Oncologic patients often present into community-based emergency rooms across the country and require specialized treatment, care and attention. Because there are so few cancer-specific emergency rooms, these patients are often being treated by healthcare providers that might not have the appropriate knowledge, skill or experience to make accurate diagnoses. This two-day, live virtual course will include interprofessional panels, as well as lectures from experts in the field to update and improve the treatment and care for the oncologic patient.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After attending the conference, participants should be able to:1. Utilize the most up to date approaches

for managing oncologic emergencies in an emergency department setting

2. Assess the importance of effective communication and teamwork while managing oncologic emergencies

EDUCATIONAL METHODS

Lecture/Didactic – Case Study – Panel Discussion – Question and Answer Sessions – Poster Session

TARGET AUDIENCE

This conference should be of value to Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, fellows, and residents.

EVALUATION

A course evaluation will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health status. Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify future educational topics.

ACCREDITATION/CREDIT DESIGNATION

CALL FORABSTRACTSDeadline for Abstract Submission is Monday, November 15, 2021.The 2022 Oncologic Emergency Medicine Conference invites the submission of abstracts regarding clinical care or best practices in an emergency care setting. The goal is to provide the audience an opportunity to collaborate and stimulate discussions specifically on how an emergency center delivers quality patient care whether in an academic, hospital or community-based setting. The type of research can be qualitative or quantitative and have a focus in medical education in oncologic care in the acute setting, public health, health services, epidemiology, or public policy. Ideally there should be a focus on the care of the cancer patient in an emergency department setting but work in areas commonly encountered in oncological patients such as sepsis, pain, electrolyte imbalances, symptom management, and palliative care measures are encouraged.

Authors may submit abstracts of completed work, work in progress, or work elsewhere within the past 12 months. Selected abstracts will be published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Accepted abstract authors will be invited to create a PowerPoint (1 slide with a 5 minute voice over included) of their research for display in a virtual e-poster hall.

Posters will be shared in PDF format and will only be available to paid registrants.

Abstract Submission Instructions: Abstracts will only be accepted electronically and should be uploaded to: https://bit.ly/3lUTAnB (Note: The link is case sensitive and the character after the 3 is a lowercase L)

The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 11:59 PM CST on Monday, November 15, 2021. Notification of acceptance for poster presentations will be acknowledged by e-mail by Monday, December 13, 2021.

Abstract Formatting Instructions:Limit abstracts to one page, type in 12-point Times New Roman font, single spaced with one-inch margins, and left justified. Organize the abstract into: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Define all abbreviations. Include the abstract title, full names, and institutional affiliations of all authors, and e-mail address of the corresponding author at the top of the abstract. Underline the name of the presenting author. Abstracts must not contain copyrighted material unless permission has been obtained by the author/publisher.

Note: In addition to submitting an abstract, conference registration must be completed at https://mdanderson.cloud-cme.com/emergency
