Goal:Provide sustainable power generation to bedouin settle-ments in South Sinai

Model: Providing solar energy to bedouin homes in South SinaiSize & Reach: more than 140 bedouin settlements

Key ingredients: Providing continuous and sustainable power generation, replacing diesel electrification with solar energy

Contact:GM: Mr. Mohamed [email protected]

Sources: Onera:http://onerasystems.com

Key Partners:Europpean Union and the governorate of South Sinai

Background:The need for sustainable power generation in Sinai has been an ongoing challenge facing the government and an essential need that bedouin settlements in Sinai have been missing. This lack of electrification was an obstacle that bedouins faced that stopped them from settling down and utilizing their manpower and resour-ces in micro and small developmental projects. In an attempt to reduce the financial burden and contribute to the gross domestic product growth in this important region, OneraSystems has worked to provide sustainable electricity to the bedouins and help reserve the area from pollution.

Solution:OneraSystems presented a project to use photovoltaic systems to provide necessary power generation to 140 bedouin homes in a virtually isolated region within the boundaries of the South Sinai governorate. In this course, they have designed, documented and arranged all tasks of this project with the government and funding agencies. Since then, the need for photovoltaic systems in provid-ing sustainable energy to bedouin and remote residential settle-ments has been growing.

Impact:Inclusive Business Impact:OneraSystems has reached more than 140 settlements in South Sinai of which 63 are in Abou Zneima city and 73 are in Abou Rdeis city. It has increased the quality of life of the bedouins and gave them the chance to have continuous electrification, the ability to watch TV and own a fridge.Environmental Impact: As a protectorate, it was very important to apply a sustainable electrification system in South Sinai to reduce as much pollution as possible.Further Impact:OneraSystems aims to continue working on this project and spread it to the rest of the South Sinai region and replace all diesel elec-trification to solar energy. They are also in continuous research to develop better solutions to upcoming projects of this sort.
